세상의 변화를 주도하는 ‘여성리더’ 양성
100년 역사의 교육기관, 자주와 봉사의 정신을 지키다

‘여성파워시대’가 열렸다. 정치, 경제, 교육 등 사회 각 분야에서 여성의 활약이 점점 두드러지고 있다. 여성의 사회적 위상과 영향력이 점차 커지는 것은 날로 복잡해지고 다양성을 띄는 사회에서 여성들이 가진 장점이 남성의 그것보다 더 적합하기 때문이라는 지적도 눈에 띈다. 이에 21세기를 이끌어 갈 차세대 여성리더 육성에 매진하고 있는 이천양정여자고등학교를 찾아가봤다.

자주적으로 사고하고 능동적으로 행동하다
100년의 전통을 가진 이천양정여자고등학교는 1903년 설립되어 1938년 신사참배를 거부한다는 이유로 일제에 의해 폐교되었던 양정여학교를 이은 역사 깊은 교육기관이다. 1946년 기독교 사학기관으로서 설립되어 현재에는 1,000여명의 학생들과 65명의 교사들이 소통과 공감을 바탕으로 한 즐거운 학교문화를 확립하고 있다.

양정여고의 가장 큰 특징은 학생들의 ‘자주성’과 ‘자율성’을 가장 중시한다는 점이다. 1956년 시작한 무감독시험은 지금까지 60여 년간 이어지며 학생들의 양심과 자율성을 존중하는 교육시스템의 롤모델로 자리 잡고 있다. 이러한 전통에 따라 양정여고에서는 교내 다양한 프로그램에서 학생의 주도적인 참여를 적극 권장하고 있다. 그 중 대표적인 것이 ‘영화제 컨셉’으로 진행되는 졸업식이다. 학생들이 직접 프로그램을 구성하고 선생님과의 일화를 딴 단편영화도 제작해 진행되는 이 졸업식은 웃음과 감동이 묻어나오는 이색졸업식으로 여러 언론매체를 통해 보도되기도 했다. 

이봉식 교장은 “미래를 이끄는 리더가 되기 위해 가장 중요한 것은 자주적으로 사고하고, 자율적으로 행동하는 것이라고 생각합니다. 저희 학교의 민주적이고 자치적인 학교문화 속에서 학생들은 문제를 스스로 해결하는 자치성과, 책임감 있게 행동하는 인성을 키울 수 있습니다”라고 설명했다.

변화를 만들어내는 체인지 메이커들
성장하는 학생들에게 있어서 교실 밖으로 나아가 세상과 직접 만나며, 행동을 통해 배움을 실천하고, 경험을 쌓는 것은 무엇보다 중요하다. 이천양정여자고등학교에서는 학생들이 학교 교육에만 갇혀있는 것이 아닌 사회와 소통하고 공감하도록 하기 위한 다양한 시도를 하고 있다. 학생들이 기획·연출하여 기업 후원의 강연자로 나서는 ‘IGNITE’, 학생 큐레이터를 양성하고 스마트폰 어플을 제작하는 등의 자율동아리 활동, 광고 수익을 통해 학생들에게 자유로운 프린트 사용을 제안한 ‘학생 무료 프린트존’ 프로젝트, 교내 프리마켓을 개설해 나눔과 공유, 자원 재순환의 의미를 되새기는 ‘마켓인유@양정’ 등 양정여고의 다양한 교내활동들은 학생들의 주도 하에 성공적인 성과를 창출해내고 있다.

학생 주도의 자율적·자치적인 학교 문화는 학생들의 학습 의욕과 효과에서도 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있다. 80% 이상의 높은 참여율을 보이는 방과 후 학교 프로그램과 진로와 관련된 학술활동을 수행하는 학술회 구성, 영어·수학·일본어·중국어 등의 과목 중점형 교과 교실제 등을 통해 학력을 향상시킨 학생들은 대학 진학에도 좋은 결과를 낳고 있다. 교사의 이동이 없는 사립학교라는 점도 교육의 지속성에 있어 강점이 되고 있다. 

사회에 참여하고, 세상을 변화시키는 ‘체인지 메이커’를 배출하고 있는 이천양정여자고등학교. 학생 누구에게나 다양한 가능성의 기회를 열어주며, 지역사회와 함께 발전하고자하는 그들의 노력이 빛나는 결실로 되돌아오기를 기대해본다.

Thinking independently and taking the initiative
Icheon Yangjeong Girl's High School which boasts a 100 year old history was established in 1903 and once was closed in 1938 due to their rejection of Japanese shrine worship. It was opened again in 1946 as a Christian private school and currently has 1,000 students and 65 teachers. The school sets 'independence' and 'autonomy' above anything else. Started in 1956, their honor system has been running for 60 years and became a role model of educational system that respects students' conscience and autonomy. The school encourages students to participate in various programs on their own initiative. Their graduation ceremony, for example, is planned by students and is processed like a film festival and it was praised by media as a unique and touching graduation ceremony. Lee says "the most important thing to be a leader, I think, is to think independently and act autonomically. The school's democratic and autonomous culture encourage students to solve problems by themselves and to act responsibly."

Innovative thinkers who change the world
It is important for students to meet the world, to put what they learned in practice and to accumulate experience. Icheon Yangjeong Gir's High School is doing various attempts to make students out of their class to communicate and sympathize with the society: IGNITE is a program which students plan, direct and give a lecture to support an enterprise, Free Print Zone is a project which suggests free use of printers for students through their circle activities and advertising income from developing smart phone apps or fostering student curators, and Marketinyou@yangjeong enables students to share what they have through a free market. This student led school culture can actually create positive effect on motivation to study. For example, their after school programs, academic activities related to career path, and subject class room are showing more than 80% of student participation and the school has a high college entrance rate as a result. The school also has a low turnover rate of employees. Icheon Yangjeong Gir's High School is producing innovative thinkers by opening up infinite possibilities for students so that they can change the society and the world.
