A global cosmetics brand Mary Kay has branches in 37 countries in the world. Mary Kay Ash founded the company under the slogan of 'made by woman for woman' and she emphasizes on 'rich life of woman'. Unlike conventional distribution system, they brought up a revolutionary system in the network marketing industry through transparency of management and sustainable growth. Power Korea has met Mary Kay Korea Sales Director Hyeokje Gong, who is a male beauty consultant in this female-centered industry, and heard about his unique competitiveness. 

Outstanding performance of Gong in the female-led market
Gong majored in trade and started his career as a salesman in the alcoholic beverages and home appliances industries when he was 27. It is commonly known that males show better performance at sales and nearly 90% of both industries were also led by males. For this reason, it took a long time for Gong to work for Mary Kay. He said "Mary Kay has a branch office in 37 countries and only 3 offices have a male director. The ratio of male to female is 1:1,000 in Mary Kay. The company's philosophy is for women and most consumers are also women. Therefore, it is difficult for a man to get into the field." Although Gong had many experience in sales, it was not an easy task to adapt to this female-led market. According to Gong, males do business on figures but females on feeling. For this reason, Gong tried to give a differentiation to the market by developing a new training system on skin and cosmetics, and is now active as a special skin and training consultant. Also, he is providing lectures to beauty consultants and network business operators. 

"Global level distribution revolution is happening now"
A stable profit structure that satisfies 30% of mid-level positions

The reason Gong has achieved this much in Mary Kay Korea is because he believes in network marketing. He started to have a conviction in network marketing when he helped a professor who was collecting data on network marketing. Gong emphasized on network marketing by saying "global level distribution revolution is happening now and Korea will soon follow this trend even though we are a little behind." But conviction itself was not enough to decide his course of life but a belief in the company, and Mary Kay gave it to Gong through their strong performance. Mary Kay was established in 1963 and has never experienced negative growth. Particularly the fact that the 30% of mid-level positions are also promised to get higher profits like the 1% of a company attracted Gong. He said "Mary Kay offers the highest commission. Although it's lower than other network marketing companies in terms of the profits for the 1% of a company, but when it comes to the 30% of mid-level positions Mary Kay is the best. Not everybody belongs to the 1% but the 30% are actually working really hard and they are well provided in Mary Kay." Of course Gong knows well about irrational domestic market. He said "there are more than 1,000 network marketing companies in Korea but only around 100 companies are legally active. This means that a lot of people failed in the industry. Crack down and regulations are needed but start-ups also need to choose right one which have a transparent management system and provides promising profits."

Gong admires Zig Ziglar who is a renowned motivation giver and wrote various books such as 'See You at the Top' and 'What I Learned on the Way to the Top'. Ziglar is the very person who gave Gong an inspiration of marketing. Gong said "he was a believer and a reliable father. Sales, at the end of the day, is about people and therefor it is a war of sincerity." Gong also gave an advice to young people who lost their way "as the nation is getting into a low-growth period, there is a depressed feeling in the society. The important thing however is to see the future when choosing a job. Even though there isn't any promising jobs at the moment, it is young people's privilege to create one." Gong is well known for a person who shares 100% of his know-how with others and he said himself that he feels worth when customers who have skin troubles become happy after a consulting with him. Power Korea supports Gong who will do his best for the development of network marketing in Korea and customer satisfaction.
