사람은 누구나 주어진 공간에 맞추기보다는 자신의 삶의 양식대로 공간을 만들어가길 원한다. 가격 산정에 따른 급박한 개발과 재개발의 홍수 속에 전문 건축 기술자들의 영역이 흔들리는 가운데, 이제는 건축의 공법과 기술, 사후 관리까지를 총괄하는 건축사들에 대한 확고부동한 재평가와 인식 확립이 필요한 시점이다. 이에 따라 기본에 충실하며 건축의 전문성을 갖춘 한인종합건축사사무소의 천국천 대표로부터 건축사의 미래를 전망하는 시간을 가졌다. 

기본바탕에 충실한 현대/전통/목조건축 설계 및 감리 전문회사
한인종합건축은 탄탄한 골조 속에 모진 풍상을 슬기롭게 풀어나갈 유연함을 갖춘 건물과도 같은 회사다. 가장 현대적인 기술로 영등포 타임스퀘어의 CGV 리모델링(CJ SQUARE), 마니커닭박물관(MANIKER STORY), 천안 및 속초의 시립박물관과 국립삼봉자연휴양림 숲속의 집, 이천 세라피아 내 여러 건축물을 설계⦁감리했고, 전통의 형식을 빌려 국내 최대 규모의 한옥 음식적인 송도 한옥마을 외식센터(경복궁), 국립삼봉자연휴양림 한옥단지, 단양 구인사 불교천태중앙박물관 등 명소로 손꼽히는 고건축물의 설계⦁감리⦁시공 과정을 총괄하였다. 천국천 대표는 “크게 일반건축과 전통건축으로 나뉜다. 전통건축의 장점은 보존하면서 현대의 기술을 도입해 자연스럽게 계승 발전하도록 설계하는 회사이다. 그리고 기본적인 건물들의 형상에서 구조까지 충분한 현장경험을 통해 파악하는 기본기가 있다. 프로젝트 개발에서 유지보수까지 첨단 설계기법과 최신기술의 조화를 통해, 건축에 필요한 설계에 있어 수준 높은 기술력을 자부한다”고 기업의 정체성을 설명한다. 천 대표는 어린시절 목수인 아버지를 통해 목조건축의 정석과 낭만적인 멋을 동시에 배웠다. 아버지의 기술은 천 대표의 꿈이 되어, 서울과학기술대학교 건축공학과에서 공부하고 현재까지도 학업에 매진하고 있다는 그는 여러 건축사사무소에서 실무를 경험하고 자격증을 취득해 전 회사 공동대표 자리까지 올라갔다. “2010년 독립하기 이전까지는 고건축과 현대건축을 모두 경험하는 시간이었다. 또한 주요 업무가 바로 문화시설 관련 사업이라 문화재와 현대건축을 모두 다루었다” 자신감을 쌓고 독립해 나왔지만, 원만한 대인관계와 젊은 나이에 입증해 낸 실력으로도 건축 전반에 불어 닥친 불경기의 흐름은 만만치 않았다. 그래서 천 대표는 자신만의 특별한 장점을 이용하여 극복해 보자는 사업플랜을 정비하던 중 산림청과의 인연으로 시작한 목조건축을 특화하여 밀게 된다. “당시 정부의 그린홈 200만호 건설정책으로 목조건축 시장 활성화와 한(韓)스타일 육성 종합계획 6대 사업중 한옥분야에서도 전통한옥의 브랜드가치를 계승하고 현대적 거주성능이 확보된 대중한옥을 개발하는 한옥R&D사업이 한창이었다. 그래서 한옥에 대한 관심이 더 커졌고 지금도 현대건축과 고건축이 50대 50의 비중으로 꾸준히 유지되고 있다” 더욱이 목구조를 활용함에 있어 전통목구조, 일반목구조 분야 모두에 경험과 자료, 기술력이 충분하다는 사실은 한인종합건축의 차별성을 익히 보여준다.

건축사의 독창성과 이미지제고, 미래인재육성 임무에 힘을 다할 것
“예전에는 벽체를 흙벽 등 자연적인 재료로 구축했다. 하지만 현대에 와서는 법적기준의 충족과 내구성을 위해 자재를 바꾸고 접목한다. 우리는 목조건축에 사용하는 경골목구조방식(2x4공법)을 벽체에 접목해 단열을 하고, 과거 많이 사용하던 목재인 육송(상록 교목) 대신 구조용집성재(글루램)로 바꾸었다. 그러면 기둥과 벽체의 갈라짐, 틀어짐 같은 변형이 없어 틈새바람으로 실내온도가 낮아지는 현상 등 단열성과 기밀성이 향상된다” 천 대표는 현대건축과 고건축을 독창적인 방식으로 조화시키는 방법을 연달아 설명한다. “지붕 구조에 있어서도 과거 한옥처럼 흙을 개어 올린 습식공법 대신, 건식공법으로 집 전체를 경량화 시킨다. 현대인의 생활 패턴에 불편함이 없도록 하는 것이다. 이것이 우리 식의 온고지신이다” 아직은 젊음이 지탱하고 있어 자리에서 지시하기보다는 직접 뛰는 것이 더 편하다는 천 대표는 당장 물질보다는 ‘발전’, ‘터전 확립’이라는 목표를 바라보고 있다. “건축계 전체가 발전하고, 특히 젊은 건축사들이 살아갈 수 있는 터전을 만드는 것을 원한다. 당장 먹고 살기 위해 이리저리 휘둘리기보다는 장기적인 건축산업 전반적인 발전을 바라보고 생각하는 자세가 필요하다고 본다” 천 대표는 건축에 대한 홍보나, 현재 진행 중인 업무들로 사무실을 유지하며 실력과 기반을 단단히 구축할 것을 다짐하고 있다. 이러한 활동의 일환으로, 천 대표는 대한건축사협회 미래인재육성위원회의 위원을 맡았다. 건축적인 제도를 개선하고, 활동할 때 발목을 잡는 비합리적이고 구태의연한 부분을 개선하기 위해서다. 건축사들의 입지를 튼튼하게 하고 안정적으로 자리 잡을 수 있는 제도를 만들어 가고도 싶다. 그러자면 건축과 건축사를 널리 알리는 일이 중요하기에, 그는 대한건축사협회(조충기 회장)의 건축영화제 집행위원으로 활동하며 영화제를 추진하고 미래인재위원회의 위원으로서 건축과 건축사를 홍보하고 있다. 2015년 협회는 첫 직선제로 회장을 선출해 회원을 위한 강한 협회를 표방하고, 건축에 대한 올바른 지식을 전달하는 포부로 출범한 바 있다. 앞으로도 천 대표의 열정적인 활동이 건축문화의 내실을 가꾸고 발전에 기여하여, 대한민국 건축사들의 희망찬 발걸음을 만들 수 있기를 바란다.

Total architectural service through traditional wisdom and modern technology
"I will demand improvement of regulation for architects"

Hanin Architecture is a company which has overcome many wind and frost by their strong framework and flexibility. With modern technology, they designed and supervised remodeling of CGV in Times Square, Yeongdeungpo, MANIKER STORY, Municipal Museum in Cheonan and Sokcho, Forest House in Sambong National Natural Recreation Forest, and numerous buildings in Icheon Cerapia. Also with traditional forms, they designed, supervised and constructed Korea's largest scale Korean restaurant Songdo Hanok Village Dine Center (Gyeongbokgung), Korean House Complex in Sambong National Natural Recreation Forest, and Guin Temple Buddhist Museum of Cheontae Order in Danyang. Chun says "architecture is divided into general architecture and traditional architecture. We preserve advantages of traditional architecture and introduce modern technology. And we analyse basic figures of building and its structure through our field know-how. From development of project to maintenance and repair, we use cutting edge technology and designing methods." Chun learned standard and esthetics of wooden architecture from his father who was a carpenter when he was a child. He then majored in Architectural Engineering at Seoul National University of Science and Technology and he said he is still studying. He has worked for several architecture companies, acquired certificates, and finally became a co-CEO of former company. Chun says "it was time for me to experience both traditional and modern architecture before I was independent in 2010. As my main works were related to cultural facilities, I treated both cultural assets and modern architecture." With his capacity, he built good relationships with people and was independent but economic recession gave him hardship. Chun was strengthening his good points when he was offered to take wooden architecture from Korea Forest Service. Chun says "around that time, government's Korean House R&D Project were ongoing as a part of Six Projects of Han Style Promotion Total Plan which was to build 200,000 Green Home. This increased popularity of Korean house and the ratio between modern architecture and traditional architecture is 50:50 now." Hanin Architecture also has enough experience, materials and technology in traditional wooden structure and general wooden structure.

Doing best to improve creativity and image and to foster future talent
Chun says "we built wall with natural materials in the past. But we change or graft materials for durability and for keeping up the legal standard. We insulate by grafting 'shinbone wooden structural method (2x4 method)' to the wall and changed existing evergreen tree to laminated timber for structure. By doing that, we can improve crack on pillars and walls, insulation and airtightness." Regarding the methods of connecting traditional architecture with modern architecture, Chun explains "instead of wet method for roof in the past, we lighten up the structure with dry method in order to provide convenience for life pattern of modern people." Although Chun is CEO, he directly work in the field with his staff and his goal is to build a foundation to grow together. Chun says "I want the industry to develop and I want to build a foundation for young architects to survive. We need an attitude to see further rather than to seek short term profits." In order to promote architecture, Chun is also working as a member of Future Talent Support Committee of Korea Institute of Registered Architects to improve irrational system and to strengthen the status of architects and their stability. As spreading architecture and architects are important, Chun is also working as a member of the executive committee of Architectural Film Festival of Korea Institute of Registered Architects (chairman Chungki Choi). The association is run by direct election system for the members and they are delivering right knowledge of architecture. And Chun is passionate to build a good architectural culture.
