The NY Times praised the healthy snack company New Frontier Foods which is famous for their snack Ocean's Halo as "the company which applied innovation to food" in 2014. The paper also reported on their 19 March issue that a cofounder of Yahoo Jerry Yang invested in the company's earlier $2M investment round and announced its first product launch. The LA Times said that "Do not expect it would be another kind of potato chips or pretzel..." and introduced Ocean's Halo as a healthy snack. Ocean's Halo also has appeared on numerous organic and vegan channels. It was developed by four fathers with different background for their children who are studying in schools in San Francisco. As it was said on the Washington Post, Ocean's Halo is the first organic snack made of dried seaweed. Among the five flavors, Korean BBQ and Sea Salt flavors made of organic Korean dried seaweed are the most popular. It was first released in California in late 2013 and sold in 2,000 major stores within a year. Rhee says "we fathers observed that children were enjoying dried seaweed for snack in schools and this initiated us into making a home made snack. We thought its savory, sweet yet crispy taste would be perfectly suited for a healthy snack and diet food." They improved the crunch, maintained the natural nutrition of seaweed while reducing the serving calories and it was a great hit as Rhee expected. The four fathers, who by that time were working in various fields such as expatriate executive of global enterprise, director of Merrill Lynch's foreign exchange department, and Silicon Valley tech executive, decided to quit their former jobs and started the snack business in earnest from September 2013 when their new business was well on the way. Ocean's Halo was spread to large stores including Whole Foods, Safeway and Target and achieved sales increase from the very first year of its release. It was praised by consumers and the US media as new kind of healthy, sustainable snack. They are currently expecting up to 3 times sales increase this year.  

A delicious, healthy, sustainable snack
Rhee says "career women are our first consumers and parents who seek a low calorie yet high nutritional snack for children and themselves are the second. Seaweed is good for osteoporosis and prevents secretion of insulin." Also, it does not contain any artificial ingredients and can easily be displayed on store shelves. Rhee continues "Ocean's Halo is only made of US government certified organic and natural ingredients and for that reason it is a little bit expensive than a normal snack but cheaper than other organic snacks so we think we are sure to create our fan base." Ocean's Halo is a good value for the price and all of the products are packaged in 1 to 3 ounce bags which make for easy portability. Rhee says "we worked on 2 methods that can improve dampness for 2 years from 2011 and developed 'Super Dry' Method which dries raw materials. And when it's done, the baked materials go through 'S-Reserve' Method to maintain the texture of food." The company also recruited a food scientist who has developed recipes for Starbucks and General Mills, to head up its Product Development. The packaging is made of 100% eco-friendly wood and plant materials. Ocean's Halo is kosher, vegan food and made with non-GMO ingredients. It is also gluten free. It is being supplied to corporate micro-kitchens of many global companies including Google, Facebook, Yahoo and HP. It won the first place press honors for best product at US EXPO EAST in 2013 and took first place at Google's annual vendor show in 2013. 

Famous for healthy nutrients and being a global company
Thanks to its big success in the US, Ocean's Halo is about to enter the Korean market. Rhee says "we donated $140,000 worth of our snacks to 12 social welfare organizations in Korea. The children were the first Korean tasters of our snack and we were really pleased about the fact that it captivated the children's appetite." Rhee and Shim became famous for 'the father who grew up with seaweed' in the US media and they predict that the prospect of world healthy food market is positive. It is this reason that the world's largest food brands are increasing their investment of healthy and organic food and executives from those companies such as Starbucks, Dole and ConAgra are personally investing in New Frontier Foods at the moment. New Frontier Foods are the first that introduced Korean seaweed and excellent Asian food resource to the global snack market. They are currently working on spreading limitless possibilities of Korean food culture and marine resources by donating 2% of their profits to Children's Education Fund. Rhee knows very well about the meaning of entering Chinese, Korean and Japanese markets that are already familiar with seaweed. Rhee says "we know very well about the people's desire for having healthy food. This means that we are not interested in chasing trendy snacks or me-too products but in developing innovative and customized tastes based on target consumer's wants in various regions." Rhee hopes that Ocean's Halo will contribute to wellbeing Korean snack culture and it is scheduled to be on sale from mid March in various department stores and premium drug stores nationwide. It is highly expected that Ocean's Halo will create a sensation in the Korean food market.
