Community love shining with two citations from Ministers
“Leading actor in development of Gyungnam region and Korea-Japan friendship and exchange”
 - Kim Jang-hee, president of Hwayoung Steel Co.

An entrepreneur’s meritorious work touched the hearts of Korean and Japanese people both. The hero is president Kim Jang-hee of Hwayoung Steel Co., who has selflessly contributed to the country’s foreign image and improvement of bilateral relations between Korea and Japan and made sure of friendship by looking for every dark corner of the community as a neighbor. He received citations from both Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs. We met him to hear how his good deed started and finally made a big ocean.

Won citations from both Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs for his meritorious service for the past 25 years
Obviously, president Kim Jang-hee of Hwayoung Steel Co. was different in catching attention from local community because he didn’t follow the way of building up the company first and then returning some of its profit to society. Citation from the Minister of Justice in November last year and from the Minister of Foreign Affairs in January this year, two times, is a very rare case for a private citizen. He commented on the citations he received, “Looking back, I made a rule to return part of what I have earned to society because I considered it the manager’s noblesse oblige though it is important to build up the company with management.” He kept so busy running the business and doing social service with his persistent and strong will that he was even hospitalized at one time. For the past 25 years, president Kim has been a nice senior to cheer up the local entrepreneurs as a councilman and officer of Masan Chamber of Commerce sharing the stable management techniques and an ‘open-handed’ businessman who never spares volunteer work and support for development of his native town. His capability is also proved by the fact that he has supported the General Alumni Association for Masan High School, assembled its executive offices to make a top-level scholarship foundation and put it in place as a prestigious school in the community. As a leading actor in starting the integrated Changwon Chamber of Commerce, he has deep affection for his hometown Masan serving as head of crime prevention volunteers under the Ministry of Justice for Masan District for three years. “Starting in 2015, the district has disappeared, and I have been in charge of Masan region conference for probation that covers committeemen from Masan, Haman, and Euiryeong regions. It is related to the work of preparing the circumstances in which the targets for probation can stand on their own.” Besides, president Kim showed his passion for voluntary service and monetary support in Lions Club, Gyungnam Forest of Life, etc. receiving awards from Lions Club International, Gyungnam governor and head of Changwon District Court successively. Then, with seniors from 25 years ago, he participated in Gyungnam Korea-Japan Friendship Association for Youth Committee and served as head for the youth committee for 4 years and as its vice president for 15 years. The Association is an organization for civilians’ exchange between Japan and Korea and has mutually sent cultural performance groups for knowing each other by composing a group of visitors for sisterhood regions. By the activity of mutual visits, home stay and exchange of sports and culture for youth, president Kim, as a civilian, has positively served bilateral relations, which had been interrupted by the past history of both countries. This project of exchange went over so well that Japanese people who participated expressed their grateful interest in Korean culture even showing the regret for their past against Korea. President Kim’s neighboring people attribute this meritorious work to his winning citation from the Foreign Minister of Korea.

Fulfills his social responsibility as an entrepreneur and inspires the awareness of liberty, democracy and justice
After working for a company until 33 years ago in Seoul, President Kim came down to his home town following the wish of his parents who were dealing in building materials (Hwayoung Building Materials). Exchanging the sector for steel, he is running the company solidly. President Kim, who renamed the company as Hwayoung Steel Co. in 1990, is processing the iron plates received from Hyundai Steel and delivering them to automobile and electronics industries. For his donations from profits and social activity funds he could use, he does his best in managing the company, currently doing a stable business with contractors of Hyundai Motors and subsidiaries of LG Electronics. Believing that an entrepreneur’s ultimate responsibility lies in realizing the law, morality and social justice as well as the right business administration, president Kim is supporting his neighbors in need for probation with daily necessities and scholarships. President Kim always looks warmly on the youth placed in dark corners with readiness to guide them properly.. The Minister of Justice who thought highly of his paternalistic side shown through his positive establishment of sisterhood relationship, support for rehab protection project and school violence prevention program complimented president Kim on his hidden meritorious services with a citation. He was also in charge of executive committee for the 50th anniversary of March 15 Uprising at the Memorial Foundation to honor the late Kim Joo-yeol, who fell as a junior student of Masan Commercial High in his opposition to the Liberal Party’s rigged election and finally triggered the April 19 Revolution. President Kim is one of those hidden leaders who have left the firm will of Masan citizens, a leading actor in democratization as a blossom in the modern history, with a national memorial day. The Memorial Foundation manages March 15 national cemetery and related exhibition hall publicizing the significance and meritorious work of this day to students. President Kim, who showed the image for publicizing March 15 in a Seoul subway station building, says that the event for its fiftieth anniversary was the most impressive of all he remembers. Serving as vice president of the Foundation, he took on the head of executive committee at the fiftieth anniversary, co-manufactured <March for my sister> with MBC and distributed it in musical, winning a big response. “The basic spirit for March 15 is liberty, democracy and justice. Though people know of liberty and democracy to some degree, I think social justice is not known well enough yet. So focusing on the part of justice, the Foundation delivers spiritual education to teachers who can make a direct influence on students or carries on the pilgrimage to the holy place of Namwon honoring the patriotic student Kim Joo-yeol.” Knowing “A sound mind in a sound body,” president Kim has as much interest in community sports as in culture, serving as the head of Masan Bowling Association once and currently as director of the Changwon Athletic Association. Putting aside the worries of his acquaintances who remember his experience of disease, president Kim has added fresh fuel to his contribution to smooth flow of the community. “Acting as a distributor in Gyungnam Community Chest for six years, I was able to reestablish the concept of social welfare. With integration of Masan, Jinhae and Changwon, there are many things that have changed. I will do my best to have my hometown Masan as developed as the other two regions with success in mutual convergence,” he promised. It stands to reason that there are many who pray for president Kim’s health. His good deeds, practical social service and generous sharing will be in place as an ideal example of true love for the community.
