대한민국의 뿌리산업을 이끌 전문 인력 양성
학위·취업 연계를 통해 산업 경쟁력 강화에 힘써

자동차와 조선, IT 등 대한민국을 대표하는 주력산업의 핵심공정을 담당하는 뿌리산업은 우리나라 제조업의 기초이자 근간을 이루는 산업이다. 특히 최근 뿌리산업은 첨단기술 개발 및 소재·디자인과의 융·복합을 통해 주력제품의 경쟁력을 좌우하는 핵심 요소로 작용하고 있다. 그러나 청년층의 뿌리산업 취업 기피 현상과 교육기관에서의 뿌리산업 관련학과 폐지 추세는 많은 기업들이 연구인력 확보에 어려움을 겪게 되는 결과를 낳고 있다.

산학연계로 뿌리산업 발전동력 확보
지난해 6월 산업통상자원부는 뿌리산업 경쟁력 강화를 위해 실무역량을 갖춘 연구개발 전문 인력을 양성하고, 뿌리기업 취업과 연계하기 위한 ‘뿌리산업 전문기술 인력양성사업’을 추진하겠다고 밝혔다. 이에 따라 경상대학교, 조선대학교와 함께 3개 대학 중 하나로 선정된 인하대학교는 뿌리산업 현장에서 요구하는 연구 및 실무 역량을 갖춘 인력을 양성, 기업에 공급하며 재직인력의 교육을 통해 기업체에 전문 인력을 확보할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 데에 최선을 다하고 있다.

인하대학교 뿌리산업 전문기술 인력양성 사업단은 1차년도 목표를 뿌리산업 대학원 인력양성 시스템 구축에 두고 운영체계 조직과 교육프로그램 개발, 대학원 구성원 조직에 매진해왔다. 우선 2014년도 7월에는 신소재공학, 기계공학과가 합쳐진 뿌리기술공학 융합전공 대학원을 개설하고 주조, 소성가공, 금형, 용접, 열처리, 표면처리 등에 기반을 둔 뿌리기업의 재직인력 12명과 신규인력1명을 확보하였다. 또한 2015학년도 전기모집에서 신규인력 11명을 선발하였고, 현재 24명의 재학생에게 정부의 전액 등록금 지원을 바탕으로 양질의 교육 프로그램을 제공 신규인력 모집과 함께 재직자 재교육 프로그램도 강화할 예정인 사업단은 이를 통해 뿌리기술 분야 전문기술 학위를 취득한 우수 연구 인력을 배출하고 기업의 역량과 제품의 경쟁력 향상을 위해 매진할 계획이다.

사업단을 이끌고 있는 현승균 단장은 “지난 사업기간 동안에는 신규 인력 확보 부분에서 어려움을 겪었지만 이번 학기에는 기업체 공채를 통한 미래사원 모집 후 대학원에 파견하거나, 기업의 인턴쉽이나 현장실습을 통하여 채용이 확정 된 학생을 뿌리기술공학과에 입학시켜 인재로 양성할 수 있도록 하는 방안과, 지속적인 홍보활동을 통해 기업의 신규 인력 수요를 늘릴 수 있도록 우수한 학생 및 참여기업을 모집하는 돌파 방안을 모색하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 또한 신규인력이 취업에 즉시 투입될 수 있도록 산학 공동연구와 논문 및 특허 지도를 강화하고, 다양한 현장 실습을 수행해 실무 맞춤형 인재로 양성할 계획이다.

기업현장에 최적화된 맞춤 교육
사업체의 역량강화에 직결될 뿌리산업 전문인력의 양성은 무엇보다 현장에 적합한 실무능력과 연구역량을 갖춰야 한다는 점에서 체계적인 교육프로그램이 중요시된다. 인하대학교 뿌리산업 전문기술 양성 사업단은 인하대학교 신소재공학과의 학부·대학원 과정 교과목을 활용 및 개선하는 한편, 교육방향에 부합하는 신규 교과목을 개발해 교육인력이 해당 분야에 관한 전문 지식을 습득할 수 있도록 돕고 있다.

뿌리기술공학 융합전공 대학원에서는 기존 학부·대학원 과정의 금속열역학, 물리금속학, 주조공학, 소성가공학 등의 8과목을 활용·개선하여 운영하고 있으며, 금속접합공학, 금속전기화학, 기기분석실습 등의 신규교과목과 주조시뮬레이션특화, 주물특화, 분말소결특화 등 기업특화프로그램을 개설할 예정이다. 현승균 단장은 “각각의 과목들은 전공지식 배양과 연구능력 향상, 기업수요를 반영한 현장실무능력을 키우는 방향으로 이루어지며 교육인력의 전문화를 이끌어내고 있습니다”라고 설명했다.

특히 참여기업 수요조사를 교과목 개발 시 반영하여 대학원생의 피드백으로 이루어지는 기업특화프로그램의 경우 각 기업에서 필요로 하는 맞춤형 인재 양성을 목표로 현장실무 위주의 실습교육으로 구성하여 기업의 실제 업무와 밀접한 내용으로 운영될 예정이다.
또한 뿌리기술공학 융합전공 대학원은 총 56대, 81억 상당의 장비를 보유한 인하대 공동기기센터와의 연계를 통해 뿌리산업체 연구개발에 필요한 분석장비의 실무교육을 수행하고 있다. 평균 12.3년 이상의 경력을 가진 멘토들의 실무 교육과 협력기관 현장교육, 연구장비 엔지니어 교육을 통해 교육생들은 연구역량을 향상시킬 수 있다.

기업과 학생, Win-Win 효과
뿌리산업을 선도하는 우수인력을 양성하고 있는 사업단의 노력은 이미 상당한 성과를 드러내고 있다. 지난 2월 25일 열린 뿌리산업 대학원 장학증서 수여식에 참석하기 위해 모인 재학생과 기업 관계자, 담당 교수는 사업단의 교육프로그램이 학생과 기업 모두에게 ‘윈윈 효과’를 얻는 기회가 되고 있다며 만족감을 드러냈다. 자동차 엔진용 부품을 생산하는 동양피스톤에 인턴으로 들어간 유승백 씨(26)는 그의 가능성을 눈여겨본 회사측의 제안으로 인하대 뿌리기술공학과에 입학하며 뿌리산업 대학원 2기생이 됐다. 그는 “학부 때 배울 수 없었던 깊이 있는 내용을 들을 수 있고, 기업에서 담당할 일을 미리 경험하면서 배울 수 있다는 것이 장점”이라며 “대학원을 마치고 동양피스톤에서 소성가공 분야를 연구하기로 돼 있어 취직에 대한 걱정 없이 학업에 전념할 수 있다”고 말했다. 동양피스톤의 이정근 팀장 또한 “기업이 추진하는 프로젝트를 학생과 교수가 함께 연구하면서 자연스럽게 회사에 대한 실무교육을 하는 효과가 있다”고 말했다.

우리나라 산업의 근간을 이루는 6대 뿌리산업 분야(금형·주조·용접·소성가공·표면처리·열처리)의 실무교육을 통해 전문 인력을 양성하고 있는 인하대학교 뿌리산업 전문기술 양성 사업단. 기업에는 우수인력 확보의 기회를, 학생에게는 전문 교육을 통한 역량 향상의 장을 제공하고 있는 이들의 노력이 더 많은 인력 양성과 자부심으로 대한민국 산업의 든든한 주춧돌이 되기를 바란다.

Securing development power of the root industry through industry-academic cooperation
June last year, the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy announced that they would launch 'Root Industry Technical Skill Fostering Project' to strengthen competitiveness of the root industry and to link it with job creation. For this, Inha University, Gyeongsang National University and Chosun University were chosen and they are carrying out related projects such as fostering specialists who are equipped with skills in research and practice and providing opportunities for the industry to secure talented manpower. The goal in the first year of Inha University's Root Industry Technical Skill Fostering Team (the team) is to build a system to foster graduate talents. They have been developing operational organizations and training programs. They opened a Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering which combined the departments of New Materials Engineering with Mechanical Engineering in July 2014 and secured 12 industry employed staff and 1 new staff whose skills cover from cast, plastic working, welding, heat & surface treatment. They also selected 11 new staff in early 2015 and 24 students are currently being supported all their tuition fess from the government. They will promote graduate level students with related skills and support for improving capabilities and competitiveness of the industry. Hyun says "we had a difficulty securing new manpower during the project last year but this year we are planning to recruit excellent students, who are accepted as prospected employee through internship or work experience by companies, and invite them to study at our graduate school." They are also planning to strengthen the instruction on industry-academy research, dissertation and patent and provide various work experience. 

Training optimized for industry
Systematic training programs are important for fostering root industry professionals who are equipped with research and business abilities. The team use and improve the course work of both undergraduate and graduate school of New Materials Engineering Department and also develop new subject for students to have related skills. The Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering is running 8 subjects including Metal Heat Dynamics, Physical Metallography, Cast Engineering and Plastic Working. They also plan to open new subjects such as Metal Joint Engineering, Metal Electric Chemicals and Mechanic Analysis Practice and industry-specialized subjects such as Cast Simulation Special, Cast Special and Powder Sintering. Hyun says "each subject will reflect cultivating special knowledge, improving research ability and industry demands." Especially they will reflect participated enterprises' demand when developing a subject so that the contents of the subject are closely related to the needs and demands of the industry. The Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering is carrying out practical training in cooperation with the university's Joint Machining Center that has 56 (worth $8m) equipment. Students can improve their capacity through down to earth training by mentors who have more than 12.3 years (average) of experience in the field. 

Win-win for students and industry
The team has achieved a lot so far. Students, professors and industry officials who participated in The Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering Scholarship Presentation Ceremony on 25 February praised that the team provides win-win situation for both students and industry. Seungbaek Yu (26), who is an intern for Dong Yang Piston (car engine parts production), became a graduate student by recommendation of the company. Yu said "I can learn things in detail which I couldn't at the undergraduate level and I can work at the same time. Also, I don't need to worry about my employment as I'm promised to work for the company in plastic working sector in full time after graduation." Junggeun Lee, the team leader of the company said "it is effective that professors and students do research and practical training together on the projects that the industry is doing."  The six parts of the root industry include mold, cast, welding, plastic working, surface treatment and heat treatment, and the team provides more opportunities of securing manpower for industry and educational training for students.
