Fostering professionals who will lead the root industry of Korea
Strengthening industrial competitiveness through industry-academic cooperation

Securing development power of the root industry through industry-academic cooperation
June last year, the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy announced that they would launch 'Root Industry Technical Skill Fostering Project' to strengthen competitiveness of the root industry and to link it with job creation. For this, Inha University, Gyeongsang National University and Chosun University were chosen and they are carrying out related projects such as fostering specialists who are equipped with skills in research and practice and providing opportunities for the industry to secure talented manpower. The goal in the first year of Inha University's Root Industry Technical Skill Fostering Team (the team) is to build a system to foster graduate talents. They have been developing operational organizations and training programs. They opened a Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering which combined the departments of New Materials Engineering with Mechanical Engineering in July 2014 and secured 12 industry employed staff and 1 new staff whose skills cover from cast, plastic working, welding, heat & surface treatment. They also selected 11 new staff in early 2015 and 24 students are currently being supported all their tuition fess from the government. They will promote graduate level students with related skills and support for improving capabilities and competitiveness of the industry. Hyun says "we had a difficulty securing new manpower during the project last year but this year we are planning to recruit excellent students, who are accepted as prospected employee through internship or work experience by companies, and invite them to study at our graduate school." They are also planning to strengthen the instruction on industry-academy research, dissertation and patent and provide various work experience. 

Training optimized for industry
Systematic training programs are important for fostering root industry professionals who are equipped with research and business abilities. The team use and improve the course work of both undergraduate and graduate school of New Materials Engineering Department and also develop new subject for students to have related skills. The Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering is running 8 subjects including Metal Heat Dynamics, Physical Metallography, Cast Engineering and Plastic Working. They also plan to open new subjects such as Metal Joint Engineering, Metal Electric Chemicals and Mechanic Analysis Practice and industry-specialized subjects such as Cast Simulation Special, Cast Special and Powder Sintering. Hyun says "each subject will reflect cultivating special knowledge, improving research ability and industry demands." Especially they will reflect participated enterprises' demand when developing a subject so that the contents of the subject are closely related to the needs and demands of the industry. The Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering is carrying out practical training in cooperation with the university's Joint Machining Center that has 56 (worth $8m) equipment. Students can improve their capacity through down to earth training by mentors who have more than 12.3 years (average) of experience in the field. 

Win-win for students and industry
The team has achieved a lot so far. Students, professors and industry officials who participated in The Graduate School of Root Technology Engineering Scholarship Presentation Ceremony on 25 February praised that the team provides win-win situation for both students and industry. Seungbaek Yu (26), who is an intern for Dong Yang Piston (car engine parts production), became a graduate student by recommendation of the company. Yu said "I can learn things in detail which I couldn't at the undergraduate level and I can work at the same time. Also, I don't need to worry about my employment as I'm promised to work for the company in plastic working sector in full time after graduation." Junggeun Lee, the team leader of the company said "it is effective that professors and students do research and practical training together on the projects that the industry is doing."  The six parts of the root industry include mold, cast, welding, plastic working, surface treatment and heat treatment, and the team provides more opportunities of securing manpower for industry and educational training for students.
