ÇØ¾ç ¹ÙÀÌ¿À¿¡³ÊÁö´Â dzºÎÇÑ ¹Ù´å ¼Ó »ý¹°ÀÚ¿ø, ƯÈ÷ Ŭ·Î·¼¶ó³ª Å×Æ®¶ó¼¿¹Ì½º¿Í °°Àº Çؾç¹Ì¼¼Á¶·ù ¶Ç´Â ¹Ì¿ªÀ̳ª ±è °°Àº ÇØÁ¶·ù µî ÇؾçÁ¶·ù¸¦ ¿ø·á·Î ÃßÃâÇÏ´Â ¾×ü¿¬·á¸¦ ÀÏÄ´´Ù. Running out of natural resources and global warming issues are not a problem for only today. These issues are getting more serious, so the world is trying to find out the solution for the change based on biotechnology. And, they are focusing on the ocean, which is they consider as the next generation’s bio resource. 

Biomass in the ocean world has immense potential resources and can use again repeatedly, which is the strongest point. However, building up the infra and growing up this idea is not that easy on this stage. By that, we met a chief Lee, Cheol-Kyoon of Technology, Research & Development for Ocean Bio energy Center, Inha University and listened about the future and vision of bio energy. 

Sustainable future energy development 
Technology, Research & Development for Ocean Bio energy Center, Inha University (Ocean Bio energy Center) is hosted by Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries as a project for the low carbon green growth policy and ocean new industry creation. Also, it is as a part of ocean bio-technology engineering which is a national project and was chosen to be a bio energy manufacturing technology business from microalgae. It has been searching for that since December 2009. The ocean bio-energy is to extract liquid fuel from microalgae such as chlorella or tetraselmis, or ocean algae like seaweed or red laver as resources. These ocean bio energy is eco-friendly and sustainable energy as an aspect and has an attention as for a driving force of green growth that be a resource of chemical industry and expected to be a solution of environmental problems. Especially, it is going to be a very righteous solution using the ocean for generating bio energy without destroying woods or fields due to that we have lots of mountains and a low self-sufficiency ratio of food. Chief Lee, Cheol-Kyoon of the Ocean Bio energy Center explained, “The west sea in Korea has the most productivity of bio energy provided a lot with ocean microalgae since there is plenty of it from China’s rivers in the world. We are doing our best to develop bio energy using those ocean microalgae with the fact.” 

Actually, we have already shown the highest level of Korea’s aquaculture technology and are making a remarkable result for diesel manufacturing using the ocean microalgae. This R&D center acquired the patent in 2011 for the first time since they developed the original technology with microalgae so that they can produce it cheaply but a lot. The core of it is to culture microalgae a lot with floating semi-permeation membrane bags that don’t let the microalgae manufactured go through out but going out sea water and nutrition. It seems like getting it for nothing but it is a technology of using nutrition out of the ocean and the sunlight, which is limitless and therefore, it became a strong point. Something looking black and green in color when it dried after getting bulks of microalgae, it has to be processed in chemicals and dilution for many times, and then, it can produce clear oil in the end. This is the microalgae bio diesel. Earlier, this oil passed 21 qualification tests like an ignition point or water percentage from Korea Institute of Petroleum Management in 2011. That is a thing that they can be proud of. 

Will lead the world bio energy market with securing the original technology 
The microalgae diesel oil is the most world alternative energy. Most of all, the strongest point of this source of energy is the high productive efficiency. 40% of the total weight of microalgae is oil and can make 40,000 liter per hectare of bio fuel a year. This is about 10 times better than the oil palm as for the most efficient energy resource in the first generation’s fuels. However, the problem is the cost of productivity. A chief of the center explained, “Now, the cost of productivity of microalgae bio diesel fuel is around 8,000 won per liter and this is quite expensive compared to normal diesel oil. But, it is possible to get down to about 3,000 won with our current skill if the scale of manufacturing would be large in bulk.” 

The R&D Center is supported by Incheon city and with that, they are promoting a advanced base so that they can culture ocean microalgae in a large-scaled around Deokjeokdo and Youngheungdo in Woongjingun. Also, they are developing a new technology associating with a capability of ocean bio technology out of that project and at the same time, they are doing the best to have the industrial know-how and the original technology by culturing them. Besides, they are trying to educate the talented who will lead the future and activate the bio industry. The ultimate goal is to keep the position as an alternative fuel replacing fossil fuel to produce various bio-chemical products utilizing microalgae that are left after extracting the bio energy. 

Chief Lee, Cheol-Kyoon said, “It is promising to be faster to be industrialized if that has other added value with being made into synthetic fibers or plastic with every single molecular particles in the biomass, not only for making the energy.”  Chief Lee, Cheol-Kyoon emphasized that Korea is only solution to be able to export our own technology to the world and making the energy independence since we have lack of biomass and it is a small country repeatedly. To be independent truly for the future energy, it is expecting for the efforts of the Technology, Research & Development for Ocean Bio energy Center to see the bright future of bio energy as a consequence.
