저탄소 녹생성장을 이끄는 해양바이오에너지 개발
미세조류 활용한 바이오 디젤유 생산기술의 독보적 연구기관

자원 고갈과 지구온난화 문제는 하루 이틀의 일이 아니다. 갈수록 심각해지는 자원과 환경 문제 타개를 위해 세계는 현재의 석유기반 경제에서 벗어나 바이오기반 경제로의 변화를 모색하고 있다. 세계가 주목하고 있는 차세대 바이오 자원은 바로 ‘해양’이다. 해양계 바이오매스 자원은 잠재력이 풍부하고, 재활용이 가능하다는 점에서 강점을 가진다. 하지만 인프라 구축 기술 개발에 있어서 경제성 문제로 상용화가 쉽지는 않은 상황이다. 인하대학교 해양바이오에너지 생산기술개발연구센터를 이끌고 있는 이철균 센터장을 만나 해양 바이오에너지 분야의 전망과 발전방안을 들어봤다.

지속 가능한 미래 에너지 개발
인하대학교 해양바이오에너지 생산기술개발연구센터(이하 연구센터)는 ‘저탄소 녹색성장 정책’과 ‘해양신산업 창출’을 위한 사업의 일환으로 해양수산부가 주관하는 국책사업인 ‘해양생명공학사업’의 일환으로 해양미세조류 유래 바이오에너지 생산기술연구사업에 선정되어 지난 2009년 12월 말부터 본격적인 연구를 수행하고 있다. 

해양 바이오에너지는 풍부한 바닷 속 생물자원, 특히 클로렐라나 테트라셀미스와 같은 해양미세조류 또는 미역이나 김 같은 해조류 등 해양조류를 원료로 추출하는 액체연료를 일컫는다. 이러한 해양 바이오에너지는 환경 친화적이고 유지 가능한 에너지 자원이라는 점에서 액체에너지는 물론 화학공업산업의 새로운 원료로서의 역할과 함께 환경 문제에 대한 해결까지 기대할 수 있는 녹색성장의 원동력으로 주목받고 있다. 

특히 우리나라처럼 식량자급율이 낮고 산이 많은 지형적 특성상 산림이나 농지를 파괴하지 않고 해양을 이용하여 바이오에너지를 생산하는 것이 가장 바람직한 방법으로 대두되고 있다. 이철균 센터장은 “우리나라와 중국의 강물이 유입되는 서해는 영양분이 많아서 해양미세조류의 대량배양에 의한 바이오에너지의 생산성이 세계적으로도 가장 높은 바다입니다. 저희는 이를 바탕으로 해양조류를 이용한 바이오에너지 개발에 전력을 다하고 있습니다”라고 설명했다.

세계 최고 수준을 자랑하고 있는 본 연구센터의 해양에서의 미세조류 배양 및 미세조류를 이용한 바이오 디젤유 생산 기술은 이미 독보적인 성과를 창출하고 있다. 연구센터는 미세조류를 값싸고 대량으로 생산해내는 원천기술을 세계 최초로 개발해 지난 2011년 특허를 취득했다. 핵심은 바닷물과 영양분은 통과시키되 생산된 미세조류는 통과시키지 않는 반투과막 주머니를 해상에 띄워 그 속에서 미세조류를 배양하는 기술이다. 공짜나 다름없는 바닷물 속 영양성분과 햇빛을 이용하기 때문에 육상에 비해 생산비용을 대폭 낮출 수 있다는 것이 강점이다. 대량 생산된 미세조류를 수확하고 건조시키면 검은 녹색을 띠는 미세조류 가루가 남는데, 이 건조된 미세조류에서 지질을 추출하고 1차정제한 후, 증류 작업을 여러 차례 거듭하면 최종적으로 맑은 기름이 생산된다. 바로 미세조류 바이오 디젤유다. 이 바이오디젤유는 이미 지난 2011년 한국석유관리원으로부터 인화점과 수분 등 상업용 품질분석 21가지 품질분석 항목에서 모두 적합 판정을 받았을 만큼 고품질을 자랑한다.

원천기술 확보로 세계 바이오에너지 시장 선도할 터
미세조류 바이오 디젤유는 세계적으로도 주목받는 대체에너지이다. 무엇보다도 높은 생산 효율이 장점으로 꼽힌다. 무게의 40%가 기름인 미세조류는 연간 1헥타르 당 최대 40,000리터의 바이오 연료를 생산할 수 있다. 1세대 원료 중 가장 효율이 좋은 오일 팜(야자유)보다 약 10배 정도높은 수준이다. 문제는 생산 단가다. 이 센터장은 “현재 저희 미세조류 바이오디젤의 생산단가는 리터당 8천원 안팎으로 시중 디젤유에 비하면 4~5배에 이르는 고가입니다. 하지만 지금과 같은 실험실 규모의 소량 생산이 아닌, 플랜트 규모의 대량 생산에 돌입하게 되면 현재의 기술 수준만으로도 3천원까지 절감이 가능합니다”라고 설명했다. 

연구센터는 인천시의 지원으로 옹진군 덕적도와 영흥도 일대에 해양미세조류를 대단위로 배양할 수 있는 해양바이오에너지 전진기지 조성을 추진하고 있다. 또한 이들 사업을 통해 해양생명공학 역량과 연계한 해양바이오에너지 신기술을 개발하는 한편, 실증 배양을 시도함으로써 원천기술과 산업화 노하우를 확보하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있다. 아울러 향후 산업화를 이끌 전문인력 양성과 바이오산업 활성화에도 노력을 기울이고 있다. 
연구의 궁극적인 목표는 바이오에너지를 뽑고 남는 미세조류를 활용해 각종 바이오화학제품을 생산할 수 있는 완전한 화석연료 대체물로서의 역할 확보다. 이철균 센터장은 “에너지를 만들 수 있는 지질뿐만아니라 바이오매스에 있는 모든 분자들까지 합성섬유나 플라스틱 등으로 제조돼 다른 부가가치를 갖게 되면 산업화가 더욱 가속화 될 것으로 전망합니다”라고 밝혔다. 

이철균 센터장은 국토가 협소하고 바이오매스 자원이 부족한 우리나라에서 에너지 자립화를 이루고 세계에 기술을 수출할 수 있는 길은 해양바이오에너지의 원천기술을 확보하고 상용화기술 및 공정을 개발하는 것이라고 거듭 강조했다. 진정한 미래 에너지 주권을 이루어 내기 위해 모든 연구역량을 집중하고 있는 해양바이오에너지 생산기술개발연구센터의 노력이 우리나라의 바이오에너지 생산기술을 세계 최고로 이끄는 결실로 맺어지게 될 날이 기다려진다.

Running out of natural resources and global warming issues are not a problem for only today. These issues are getting more serious, so the world is trying to find out the solution for the change based on biotechnology. And, they are focusing on the ocean, which is they consider as the next generation’s bio resource. 

Biomass in the ocean world has immense potential resources and can use again repeatedly, which is the strongest point. However, building up the infra and growing up this idea is not that easy on this stage. By that, we met a chief Lee, Cheol-Kyoon of Technology, Research & Development for Ocean Bio energy Center, Inha University and listened about the future and vision of bio energy. 

Sustainable future energy development 
Technology, Research & Development for Ocean Bio energy Center, Inha University (Ocean Bio energy Center) is hosted by Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries as a project for the low carbon green growth policy and ocean new industry creation. Also, it is as a part of ocean bio-technology engineering which is a national project and was chosen to be a bio energy manufacturing technology business from microalgae. It has been searching for that since December 2009. The ocean bio-energy is to extract liquid fuel from microalgae such as chlorella or tetraselmis, or ocean algae like seaweed or red laver as resources. These ocean bio energy is eco-friendly and sustainable energy as an aspect and has an attention as for a driving force of green growth that be a resource of chemical industry and expected to be a solution of environmental problems. Especially, it is going to be a very righteous solution using the ocean for generating bio energy without destroying woods or fields due to that we have lots of mountains and a low self-sufficiency ratio of food. Chief Lee, Cheol-Kyoon of the Ocean Bio energy Center explained, “The west sea in Korea has the most productivity of bio energy provided a lot with ocean microalgae since there is plenty of it from China’s rivers in the world. We are doing our best to develop bio energy using those ocean microalgae with the fact.” 

Actually, we have already shown the highest level of Korea’s aquaculture technology and are making a remarkable result for diesel manufacturing using the ocean microalgae. This R&D center acquired the patent in 2011 for the first time since they developed the original technology with microalgae so that they can produce it cheaply but a lot. The core of it is to culture microalgae a lot with floating semi-permeation membrane bags that don’t let the microalgae manufactured go through out but going out sea water and nutrition. It seems like getting it for nothing but it is a technology of using nutrition out of the ocean and the sunlight, which is limitless and therefore, it became a strong point. Something looking black and green in color when it dried after getting bulks of microalgae, it has to be processed in chemicals and dilution for many times, and then, it can produce clear oil in the end. This is the microalgae bio diesel. Earlier, this oil passed 21 qualification tests like an ignition point or water percentage from Korea Institute of Petroleum Management in 2011. That is a thing that they can be proud of. 

Will lead the world bio energy market with securing the original technology 
The microalgae diesel oil is the most world alternative energy. Most of all, the strongest point of this source of energy is the high productive efficiency. 40% of the total weight of microalgae is oil and can make 40,000 liter per hectare of bio fuel a year. This is about 10 times better than the oil palm as for the most efficient energy resource in the first generation’s fuels. However, the problem is the cost of productivity. A chief of the center explained, “Now, the cost of productivity of microalgae bio diesel fuel is around 8,000 won per liter and this is quite expensive compared to normal diesel oil. But, it is possible to get down to about 3,000 won with our current skill if the scale of manufacturing would be large in bulk.” 

The R&D Center is supported by Incheon city and with that, they are promoting a advanced base so that they can culture ocean microalgae in a large-scaled around Deokjeokdo and Youngheungdo in Woongjingun. Also, they are developing a new technology associating with a capability of ocean bio technology out of that project and at the same time, they are doing the best to have the industrial know-how and the original technology by culturing them. Besides, they are trying to educate the talented who will lead the future and activate the bio industry. The ultimate goal is to keep the position as an alternative fuel replacing fossil fuel to produce various bio-chemical products utilizing microalgae that are left after extracting the bio energy. 

Chief Lee, Cheol-Kyoon said, “It is promising to be faster to be industrialized if that has other added value with being made into synthetic fibers or plastic with every single molecular particles in the biomass, not only for making the energy.”  Chief Lee, Cheol-Kyoon emphasized that Korea is only solution to be able to export our own technology to the world and making the energy independence since we have lack of biomass and it is a small country repeatedly. To be independent truly for the future energy, it is expecting for the efforts of the Technology, Research & Development for Ocean Bio energy Center to see the bright future of bio energy as a consequence.
