Ceramist Kijung Lee
The aesthetic of relations that harmonizes while searching for inner world
True art is to communicate with audience
Opening a new prospect of ceramic art through aesthetic of relations

Born in the home of ceramic Yeoju City, Kijung Lee had an interest in art when he was a boy and it is said that he carved a work with the pillar of wooden porch when he was a second year student in the middle school. Because of his family's financial difficulty, he had to draw again and again in a paper until it was torn apart and he even drew on the hemp cloth his mother brought with her when marrying his father. Lee actually chose to be a western painting artist at frist. He ran an atelier in Anyang City for a few years but he was fed up with city life. Around that time, he visited his hometown to meet an old friend and was inspired by the friend's works made of clay. Lee said "looking back, I was constantly surrounded by clay. I thought how beautiful it was to make restrained form of ceramics from intangible materials. I think the process of making ceramics itself is a process of pouring one's spirit." Changing one's style can be a big challenge but changing material itself can be even more so. But Lee fell in love with the charm of clay and he poured aesthetic of relations, derived from a meditation on human spirit and relationships, into his works and is opening a new prospect of ceramic art.

Unique art world that depicts the process of creation
Art is to express harmony between one's inner world and external environment

Not many Korean ceramic artists produce large scale works like Lee. The reason Lee's works have a uniqueness is because each work has its own style and feel. His art works contain Lee's thought, emotion and the effect of environment happening during the process of creation and it can be called as 'art of temporality'. Making ceramic means one can only produce one at a time and the artist has to pour everything he/she has. One work usually take 4 to 5 months and numerous coloring is required in order to gain a good texture and a hue. The process literally is a process of self-immersion. Lee said "even if nobody recognizes my works, they are still myself. Expressing one's inner world is most important and then the harmonizing it with external environment should be followed to make a good work." Everyday, Lee thinks really hard to express the value of his inner world. Like many other artists, he often experiences 'Writer's block' but, he can heal himself by going out to see a river or the sea. Lee makes many mistakes in order to find a compromise between the elements such as the kind and temperature of fire and enamel so that he can get desired color. He sometimes expresses with unique color by mixing up different clay and sometimes create various colors by dressing bronze on the clay and adjusting the temperature of fire and the amount of enamel.

Seeing in the audience's point of view
The works of Lee give different appreciation according to each audience. Lee thinks a work can communicate with audience when it has the artist's inner world and the works that are focused on aesthetic sense are nothing but a shape. For this reason, Lee respects audience's point of view and try hard to communicate with them. Whenever he holds an exhibition, Lee keeps the exhibition hall till the end and has a time to talk with the audience because he wants to deliver his meaning and purpose directly to the audience rather than by a brochure or a lecture. Lee said "not many artists are present in the exhibition hall. This can make the audience find the artists intension through the brochure but it cannot contain 100% of the artists intention. This is the reason why I want to be present in the exhibition hall most of the time to communicate with them and I think it is a kind of my duty to do it for both my works and the audience." Lee said he never regrets for being an artist even though he has been through many turns and twists, and for this reason, it seems that Lee was born to be an artist. Meanwhile, Lee is planning to hold a solo exhibition in November and will introduce his formative works and plain works. Power Korea gives a bid hand to Lee.
