꽃. 수많은 장르의 옷을 갈아입고 예술로 피어나다

물과 빛에 반응하고 피어나는 자연의 신비로운 섭리를 담은 꽃은 커팅과 변형 후에도 일정 기간 살아 있는 특성 덕에 꽃꽂이라는 예술의 주역으로 활약한다. 그림과 조각으로는 부족한지 이제는 행잉 가드닝(실내공중정원)이 세계적인 유행을 타고 있으며, 이에 질세라 꽃꽂이 분야도 첨단문명이라는 양분을 공급받아 새로이 거듭나고 있다. 3월호를 맞이하여 본지에서는 꽃장식의 새로운 물결을 선도하는 송성호 교수를 만나 꽃예술의 새로운 트렌드를 분석해 본다. 

실험성과 생명성을 꽃의 속성과 결합한 예술가
지난겨울 컬러링 북 <비밀의 정원>은 색연필과 펜을 이용한 2D공간 속 화훼조형이라는 평가 속에 공전의 히트를 기록했다. 빡빡한 삶 속에서도 사람들은 꽃을 사랑하고 있으며 더욱이 만물이 생동하는 3월에는 대자연이 꽃을 피운다. 그 꽃의 빛과 모양, 향기를 더욱 아름답게 다듬는 화훼조형 예술가들이 사계절 중 가장 사랑하는 계절이 온 것이다. 이러한 조형예술가들 중에서도 가장 실험적인 꽃예술가인 송성호 교수는 식물을 교육하고 연구하시는 아버지 덕분에 나팔꽃과 채송화, 과꽃 등 주변의 소박한 꽃들에 대한 호기심 속에서 자랐다. 그 호기심은 학술적인 연구로 이어져 화훼원예학을 전공하여 박사학위 논문으로까지 연계되었고, 송 교수는 (사)한국꽃예술학회 4대 학회장을 역임하는 한편 교단에 서게 되었다. “꽃에 대한 관심과 자란 환경에서 많은 영향을 받았다.

고등학교 졸업과 함께 시작한 꽃작품은 대학에서 미술를 전공하고 이화여대 꽃예술최고지도자전문교육과정, 한국꽃예술학회의 활동과 고려대학교대학원에서 화훼조형 연구를 병행한 끝에 마침내 꽃의 형태와 구조적, 생리적인 것들을 이미지화한 작품을 표현하고, 실험하고, 분석한 학위논문으로 완성한 것이다”라고 언급하는 송 교수는 교수직을 선택한 이유에 대해서도 “꽃에 관한 지속적인 작품표현과 이론정립으로 논문을 써 왔고, 지금까지 공부해온 결과와 경험을 지식전달 형식으로 후진들에게 전하고 싶었다”고 간결하게 말한다. 송 교수의 삶을 관통하는 꽃예술 분야는 꽃, 그리고 꽃과 직접 관련된 것이나 그 이미지가 주체가 되어 입체조형의 요소와 원리에 의해 미를 창조하고 표현하려는 인간의 활동, 그리고 그 작품을 말한다.

이러한 분야는 꽃이 시들은 추운계절에도 꽃의 아름다움을 여전히 재현한다. 그래서 공간을 점유하는 공간예술, 시각을 통해 전달되는 시각예술, 입체로 형태가 형성되는 입체조형예술이다. 또한 꽃이 지닌 실용주의적 기질을 반영하듯이 장식적인 성격을 강조한 장식예술, 그리고 새로운 환경을 창출하는 환경예술까지 꽃이라는 심상적 이미지로 구현할 수 있는 범위를 모두 포괄한다. 이러한 분야들은 개인 및 여러 대학의 학과, 그리고 여러 협회를 통해 연구되고 대중들에게 공개된다. 송 교수의 경우는 동양, 서양의 꽃작품과 분화를 이용한 원예디자인에서도 우리의 전통을 근거로 해 보완하고, 생활 환경에 적합한 작품을 표현함에 중점을 둔다고 한다. 송 교수는 아울러 “예술과 이론을 체계적으로 구축하고, 창조적 표현을 위해 실험적 자세로 다양한 재료와 기법을 추구한다. 작품에는 식물 고유의 생명성을 예술적으로 강조하고, 실제 움직임이나 운동성을 표현해 생명과 연계된 정신적 가치를 부여한다”고 덧붙인다.

꽃예술에 동적인 조형을 현대적으로 재해석한 분야 개척
그렇기에 송 교수의 작품을 알기 위해서는 가장 애착을 갖고 있다는 박사학위 논문인 <한국 현대화훼조형의 특성과 키네틱 아트 기법표현>을 짚고 넘어가야 한다. 키네틱 아트는 마르셀 뒤샹의 1913년 작 <모빌>에서 출발해, 테오 얀센, 나움 가보 등이 물리학, 공학적 요소를 미술과 결합한 일종의 움직이는 조형 개념이기도 하다. 송 교수는 심장이 뛰는 화훼조형의 표현을 위해, 식물의 형태 중 꽃과 잎, 가지의 형태에서 생리적, 구조적, 상징적 이미지를 표출해 형상화할 때 키네틱 아트의 동적인 요소를 도입시킨 방식으로써 생명성을 극대화했다. 작품을 전시하고 감상자의 설문조사, 전문가의 면접을 통해 키네틱 아트의 운동효과를 객관적으로 검증한 끝에 송 교수는 키네틱 아트와 화훼조형을 결합한 분야로서는 국내 최초로 박사학위를 획득했다. 그리고 그 노하우는 고려대 생명환경과학대학원 화훼장식전공 학생들과 화훼조형을 전공하는 학생들에게 전수되고 있다. 화훼관련 전시회만 50여회, 그리고 프랑스, 독일, 미국, 일본, 대만, 중국 등 해외 전시회와 초대전에 참가하였으며 <월간플레르>지에 4년간 작품 연재 중인 송 교수는 사)한국꽃예술학회장 역임 시 대통령직속 국가브랜드위원회가 프랑스에서 한-프 우호의 밤 ‘조선왕비 파리에 오다’ 중 <생명의 환희전>에 참가하기도 했다.

2012 서울 핵안보정상회의에서는 대통령직속 국가브랜드위원관의 화훼장식 공간연출에 참가하고, 지금까지 현대미술에서 사용되는 장르와 기법을 화훼조형과 연계하여 꾸준한 호응을 받고 있다. “환경을 꽃으로 연출하는 것과 각종 행사의 테이블장식과 파티를 기획, 연출하는 것에 관심이 많다. 그래서 꽃과 그 작품에 연계된 여행이나 사진을 찍는 것을 즐긴다. 작품에 모티브가 되는 장면을 발견하는데서 즐거움을 찾는다. 다양한 장르의 전시회 관람을 하는 것도 아이디어를 창출하는데 도움이 된다” 송 교수는 화훼조형의 주재료로 꽃과 식물을 사용하지만, 현대미술의 다채로운 정의를 포괄하는 표현수단도 즐긴다. 따라서 각종 오브제, 금속, 합성수지, 거울, TV, 비디오 등 영상매체와 레이저, LED 등도 작품에 이용한다. 그리고 화훼조형에는 색광에 의한 라이트 아트 기법, 시각적 착시현상을 일으키는 옵티컬 아트 기법과 좌우, 상하, 회전 등을 가미한 움직이는 예술 ‘키네틱 아트’ 기법까지 활용하니 표현수단이 더욱 풍부해졌다. 그러다보니 송 교수는 항상 연구해야 한다고 말한다. “앞으로 화훼조형에 대한 작품, 교재 및 논문발간을 하고 키네틱 아트 기법에 대한 책, 그리고 테이블과 화예, 파티 등에 활용되는 꽃장식과 환경 디자인에 관한 책도 집필하고 싶다. 또 작품을 하면서 느끼는 꽃의 보존법과 시각효과를 더 연구하고 싶다”

결혼과 장례, 파티 등 인간의 삶에 친숙한 꽃. 그 꽃은 삶과 감성을 완성하는 찬연한 문화적 가치를 담고 있다. “문화수준이 높아짐에 따라 생활이나 환경 속 꽃의 가치를 생각하는 분이 많아진 만큼, 다양한 예술 장르로 승화된 꽃 작품에 많은 관심을 부탁드린다”는 송 교수의 열정도 지금 꽃처럼, 활짝 피어나고 있다.

Artist who combined experiment and vitality with properties of flower
The coloring book 'Secret Garden' hit the market with its so called 2D flower modeling by using colored pencil and pen. People love flowers and all living things are blossoming in March. The month is most beloved by flower modeling artists who shape light, form and scent of flowers beautifully. Among the artists, professor Sungho Song is most experimental and she was growing up surrounded by many flowers thanks to her father who was an educator and a researcher of flower. Her curiosity led her to academic research and she majored in Flower Horticulture and obtained a PhD and served as the 4th chairman of Korea Society of Flower Art and is active as a professor. Song says "I grew my interest in flower since I was a child. I majored in Fine Arts, was related to Flower Art Master Leadership Training Course of Ewha Women's University, Korea Society of Flower Art and Flower Modeling Research at Korea University, and this led me to complete my dissertation which I expressed images of form, structure and physiology of flowers and their experiment and analysis." For the reason she is working as a professor, she says "I've been writing papers through my works and theory and I want to deliver my fruit and experience to younger students." In flower art, people express their activities and works through flowers based on three dimensional modeling. It reproduce the beauty of flower even in winter where most flowers are withered. It is space art, visual art and three dimensional modeling art and it also covers decorative art and environmental art. Theses areas are researched by universities and organizations and introduced to public. Song improves flower designs of eastern and western flower works and focuses on expressing life environment. Song says "I pursue various materials and styles to build art and theory systematically and to express creatively. I emphasize vitality of plant artistically on my works and add spiritual value linked with life through motion and mobility. 

Pioneering the field that reinterprets flower art and dynamic modeling in modern terms
In order to know about Song's works, we need to understand her favorite dissertation 'Techniques of Kinetic Art and Characteristics of Modern Flower Modeling in Korea'. Kinetic Art is a mobile modeling starting from Marcel Duchamp's Mobile in 1913 and Theo Jansen and Naum Gabo added elements of physics and engineering to it. Song maximized vitality by introducing mobile element of Kinetic Art when she expresses physiological, structural and symbolic images. She objectively verifies mobile effect of Kinetic Art by surveying and interviewing audience and professionals and combined Kinetic Art with Flower Modeling to obtain a PhD for the first time in the field in Korea. And her know-how is being delivered to students. She participated in 50 flower related exhibitions including France, US, Japan, Taiwan and China. She also participated in 'Joy of Life Exhibition' of 'Korean Queen Comes to Paris' held at the event of Korea-France Friendly Night' of National Brand Committee. In addition, she has been publishing her works serially in monthly magazine Fleur for 4 years. She participated in flower modeling space directing of Presidential National Brand Committee at 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit. She says "I'm very much interested in creating environment with flowers and directing and managing parties.

That's why I enjoy travelling and taking photos related to flowers so that I can find motive from them. It is also helpful to visit a variety of genres of exhibitions to get ideas." Song mainly uses flowers and plants for materials but she also uses various methods of modern art such as metal, synthetic resins, mirror, TV, video, laser and LED. Flower Modeling is rich in methods as it uses lighting art, optical art and kinetic art. Song says "I want to write books about flower modeling, kinetic art, flower decorating and environmental design that can be used in table and party decoration. I also want to do a research on preserving methods and visual effect of flowers." Flowers are familiar with us and they contain cultural value that completes our lives and emotions. Song says "more people are recognizing the value of flowers as our cultural level is increasing and I ask your participation in flower art."
