<Active women who are opening the future of Korea>
Positive pink leadership inspires dreams
‘A success story’ written with the process of a global enterprise and a woman’s delicate leadership
Choi Gyung-ok, NSD of Mary Kay Korea

Times are changing. It is a long time since male-oriented vertical leadership has lost its ground. The new period requires soft and horizontal leadership, which is calling attention to woman’s leadership characterized by her own sensitivity and delicacy. In the age of woman’s leadership for harmony, combination and philosophy of consideration and sharing, we met NSD Choi Gyung-ok of Mary Kay Korea, who is on the fast track with excellent leadership.

Success only comes to those who make a challenge
Mary Kay is a global cosmetic brand set up in 1963 by Mary Kay Ash with the corporate philosophy ‘To enrich a woman’s life.’ Upon the foundation, Mary Kay put out ‘5-step basic treatment set’ opening a new chapter for skincare, and continued to build up until it has been put in place as the world’s top-level beauty group. It was in 2002, 13 years ago, that NSD Choi Gyung-ok had an encounter with Mary Kay and started a new life. She had made customized woman’s brand ‘Ina Fashion’ after a ten year’s career in fashion industry with conviction and zeal and this brand took off in domestic fashion industry and even became known to Japan. However, in the beginning of 2000’s when IMF crisis hit Korean economy, a slump of fashion industry continued in difficult economic situation and she had no choice but to close his business. Not long later, she gave birth to her second baby and then became worried about skin aging, when she hit upon the idea of Mary Kay. From her personal experience of the beauty product’s excellent effect, she made a new challenge, which was the starting point of the ‘brilliant success of NSD Choi Gyung-ok.’

NSD Choi Gyung-ok recalled, “We are now doing work with the title of beauty consultant, but then it was not in such good circumstances. All my neighbors opposed to it, but my biological mother told me, ‘Give it a try. It couldn’t do any harm.’” Belief in the products she had experienced herself and her will toward a new challenge infused life again into her dream about success.

Woman’s delicate leadership that touched customers
There were numerous difficulties before her when she got off the ground after finishing the training for a beauty consultant. It was because Mary Kay’s products were still unfamiliar to Korean customers who typically regard brand awareness as important. To get over such difficulty, she chose ‘a sincere heart for the sake of customers.’ To women who came to take counsel, she didn’t explain the products unconditionally but made sure to deliver in-depth analysis of their skins and information. People who visited her listened to NSD Choi’s analytic explanation about their skins and inquired about how to keep their skin healthy. This naturally led to selling Mary Kay products increasing sales and cases of reference exponentially. What kept sustaining her most was ‘her firm belief’ in Mary Kay’s craftsmanship. “Generally, when launching a product, many enterprises follow the trend or popular components. However, Mary Kay’s products are focusing on the customer’s needs.” Mary Kay’s philosophy of putting customers first has been largely responsible to become the first-ranking cosmetics beating out numerous luxury brands. Currently, with branches in 35 countries of the world, Mary Kay is winning a high fame by analyzing the customers’ propensity and needs by country and focusing on putting out products needed and wanted by them.

She was doing well enough to attract 200 customers in just one year after joining the company when, by persuasion of the team leader who had been laying eyes on her, she became ‘a sales director (SD),’ a leader in discovering and coaching beauty consultants, not just a sales person. Then, in 2008, she rose to the highest position ‘national sales director (NSD)’ for the eighth time in Korea. NSD Choi says that her success has come from ‘an attitude of doing her best without frustration.’ “In Mary Kay, there are so many people who have really excellent abilities. The only thing in which I have been better than them was ‘I never feel frustrated.’ It seems that the attitude of doing my best silently has made me what I am.”

Failure and hardship is an asset for success.
NSD Choi Gyung-ok said that she has suffered numerous failures and hardships until she has the current place, Once, she had a great slump from her own brother’s traffic accident and almost dropped out of work, but a senior’s advice that ‘Right before a big success, there always comes a crisis’ kept her on. The ‘positive thinking’ that only the one who has overcome a crisis can make success changed her thereafter. She says that one should have faith and goal for success. What leads one to success is doing his best for the present supposing his picture three or five years later, which is simplest but hardly practicable. “However high one may set his aim, life cannot change without strenuous efforts himself. I also made numerous efforts to perform what I like and suffered many failures in the course. However, like the saying, ‘It is the one who has had many failures, not many successful results, that makes final success,’ numerous failures one has been through will be an asset for the success in distant future after all, I think.”

Besides, she explained that Mary Kay has the best business environment for a woman who does her best like this. “Mary Kay is a company for women, which develops women’s potential, inspires self-confidence and makes a successful woman.” ‘Pink balance’ system operated by Mary Kay is also fit for housewives who may find self-management difficult. Through this system in which beauty consultants can complement one another for lacking parts and lead one another, over a thousand beauty consultants are doing business. She said proudly, “The utmost strength of Mary Kay is that it is a community for helping one another and making for success together. We have a motto of complementing one another to make synergy effect rather than any one person being superior.” NSD Choi Gyung-ok has a dream that when a business center is set up in the future, she will make a care facility so that women may work at ease. “Our country is in such a tough environment for women to work outside. They have to juggle childbirth, nursing and job at the same time, any one of which is simply hard. I think it my duty in the future to provide any better environment for them and help them exercise their capability fully.” The success that NSD Choi Gyung-ok has made is not a small one at all. However, she says that any ordinary person can have a dream and turn their dream into a success in reality. Like the Mary Kay spirit that seeks for woman’s rich life, we expect that NSD Choi Gyung-ok’s picture will be a role model for many women with their goal and hope.
