기를 담은 예술혼, 칡서의 저변확대를 위해 쏟다

어설픈 파필이나 팔뚝에만 힘이 들어간 칡서가 아니다. 고도의 집중과 자연의 흐름을 읽는 붓질이다. 붓질을 할수록 수명이 는다는 칡붓으로 그려낸다. 오랑캐들의 무뢰한 침략을 막고 황제와 백성들을 보호해 달라는 사념이 담긴 고대의 칡서는 자칫 끊어질 듯 하다가 한국의 기인에게 전수되어 그 검은 아름다움을 흰 화선지에 발산한다. 흑룡과 봉황같이 귀한 영물처럼, 붓이 닿은 흔적마다 혼을 담은 칡서의 기품을 전파하는 안중선 소장의 50년간의 예술혼과 삶의 궤적을 둘러본다. 

한 끝 차인 기인과 천재 예술가 사이의 비범함에 대해
예술가이자 연구자인 안중선 소장의 능력을 알아보자면, 그의 파란만장한 삶을 먼저 조명해야 한다. 그는 범상치 않은 인물이다. 최고학부인 서울대 철학과 재학 도중에 약속된 미래를 박차고 나간 일화도 있다. 부유한 아버지 밑에서 귀공자처럼 자랄 수도 있었지만, 일부러 사람들의 동정과 멸시를 받으며 걸인 생활을 하기도 했다. 대개 화가나 행위예술가들이 인간의 손길이 닿지 않는 자연의 기운을 얻기 위해 역설적으로 자가용을 이용하여 다니는 것과 달리, 안 소장은 오래도록 면허를 딸 생각을 하지 않았다고 한다. 평생토록 그림, 문학, 음악을 해온 예술가였으며 세상의 기운을 읽고 알린 삶 때문에, 그는 종종 세상의 기인들과 비교되었다. 그는 천기누설구통토가를 창시하고, UFO와 심령의 존재를 신뢰한다. 그런 안 소장은 1985년 군부정권의 사회 분위기 속에서 사주와 운을 읽는 저서 <천기누설>을 발간하며 자칫 혹세무민되기 쉬운 젊은이들을 고전으로 인도했다. 그가 당시에는 파격적이던 운명컨설턴트, 사주카페의 기원이 된 형태를 고안했을 때, 어떤 이들은 영국에는 알레이스터 크롤리, 한국에는 안중선이 있다고도 했다. 그러나 크롤리가 최후의 심판과 전쟁을 암시하여 21세기 현재까지 공포심을 남기고 떠난 것과 달리, 안 소장은 벽력같은 소리로 미래를 예지할 때에도 불운을 피해가고 행운을 부르는 토속 기복적인 인간미를 보여주어 지지자들을 끌어 모았다. 지지자들 중에서는 안 소장이 한의대에서 동양철학을 강의하다 만난 한의사인 그의 아내도 있었다. 안 소장에게는 오랜 세계 유랑과 방랑생활 동안 자연히 터득하게 된 ‘눈에 보이지 않는 것’을 읽어내는 능력이 있다고 한다. 세상은 평범하지 않은 능력에 대해 종종 ‘가짜’라고 매도하지만, 지금까지 권위 있는 단체와 학계에서 주목받아 수많은 강연을 소화해 내고, 수많은 언론매체에서 기고를 환영 받아온 안 소장은 이러한 항간의 의견에 대해서도 여유가 있다. “나의 삶이 곧 나의 작품이다” 기인은 기인을 알아본다고 그는 18세 때 차이나타운에서 만난 중국 최후의 신관에게서 고유한 칡서의 개념을 알게 되었다. 그리고 원시시대 때부터 외적의 침입으로부터 보호하기 위해 특별한 기원과 이념을 담아 쓰고 그린다는 기서화(기서예) 형태의 칡서를 수십 년에 걸쳐 갈고 닦았다. 처음에는 단순 취미였지만, 근당 양태동 선생의 사사를 받은 서예로 표현하다보니 일반인의 눈에도 뜨일 수밖에 없었다. 목욕재계하고 우주와 달의 기운을 받아 맨몸으로 그린 그의 작품들은 일본 에루가와 호루에서도 독보적인 기서예 화풍임을 인정받았다. 

생명과 생동감이 살아 숨쉬는 칡서의 저변 확대 원한다
연구자로서 안 소장은 칡서의 가장 중요한 요소인 칡뿌리에 대해 ‘강인하고 신성하다’는 표현을 쓴다. 인적 드문 깊은 산골에서 오래 묵어 자란 칡을 물에 불리고 두드려서 고유의 결을 살리는 데만 5-6개월이 걸린다. 그래야 단 2-7초라는 짧은 시간 안에 매생이를 풀어놓은 듯 단순하면서, 우주 성단이 분자 단위로 광년 거리를 수놓듯 흐르는 환상적인 붓질감각을 살릴 수 있기 때문이다. 그는 이 작업을 50년이 넘도록 수작업으로 해 왔다. 대량생산하는 모필붓에 비해 칡붓이 소장용으로만 간직되는 것이 안타까웠던 그는, 내재된 강력한 에너지를 붓으로 단번에 표현하며 사람들에게 칡붓과 칡서의 절묘한 멋을 알리기 시작했다. 먹에 자주 담그면 썩은 내가 나는 모필붓과 달리, 천년을 두어도 삭지 않는 것이 칡붓이다. 그 칡붓에 하늘의 땅의 기를 담아야만 제대로 그려진다는 칡서는 흑과 백으로 표현된다. 칡서는 글의 획으로 그림처럼 표현한 서화체, 그림 속에 그림이 들어있는 화서체, 그리고 화서체를 초월한 그림 속 그림이 된 회화체라는 3종으로 나뉜다. 갑골문, 상형문자가 만들어진 수 천년 전 고대 중국 황실의 기법을 전수받아 하루 10시간 씩 갈고 닦은 안 소장은 2008년 ‘알몸 전’에서 칡서를 처음 공개했다. 동굴벽화, 상형문자, 토기문자, 금문, 갑골문자로 파자화 된 그의 작품이 일으킨 파장은 칡서의 본고장인 중국 상해로도 전해졌다. “칡서의 기(氣)와 아름다움은 설명보다는 직접 보고 느끼셔야 한다. 다양한 기운이 각각의 선에 담겨져 사람마다 다른 감상을 얻을 수 있다” 는 안 소장은 화백으로서 일본, 파리, 런던 등을 누비며 동양추상화 분야에서 21회 수상하는 영광을 얻기도 했다. 국내 공중파와 북경방송, NHK, 호지 TV등에 그의 인생과 작품이 소개되고 작품 활동과 약 2,000여 회의 강의를 소화하며 전문가로서 더할 나위없는 명성을 얻었지만 안 소장은 “나 자신보다는 나를 만들어온 칡서에 대한 인지도가 더 높아졌으면 좋겠다”는 뜻을 밝히고 있다. 파리 왕립미술대학원, 하버드대 경영대학원과 뉴욕대 대학원 영화연극학과를 수료한 경력도 그의 작품을 알리는데 좋은 간판이 되었지만, 여전히 그는 작품이 모든 것을 말한다고 굳게 믿고 정진 중이다. 그러다 보니 그가 찍은 사진에도 사물들의 찰나와 생물들의 영적인 기운이 담겨 있다. 이 사진들은 e-파워포토라는 이름으로 불리며 그가 총괄하는 큐레이터 과정을 거쳐 새로운 문화창조의 영역을 제시하고 있다. 예술에도 토털패키지를 추구했던 안 소장은 칡서를 통해 토털전시, 새로운 시대에 걸맞게 온고지신을 추구하고 있다. 이렇듯 건강하고 긍정적인 칡서의 힘을 알리는 안 소장이 1980년대 미래알림이로 활약했던 것처럼, 앞으로도 새로운 예술 저변을 확대하는 시대적 선구자로 기억되기를 바라는 바이다.

About a difference between an eccentric and a genius artist

To know about artist and researcher Ahn, we need to understand many turns and twists of his life. He is a remarkable person. He could have grown up like a young noble under his rich father but he even once lived like a homeless. Unlike many painters and performance artists who use their own car to get energy of the nature by avoiding public, Ahn have not even thought of having a driving license. He has done painting, literature and music for life. He is also known as eccentric for his ability of reading energy of the world and let people know about it. He established Chunki-nusul-gutong-toga, and believes in UFO and psychic. He released a fortune telling book called 'Chunki-nusul (leakage of the profound secret)' in 1985 and led young people who could fall into corruption to classics. When he devised a fortune telling consultant and the original form of fortune cafe, people said there is Aleister Crowley in the UK and Ahn, Jung-sun, in Korea. But unlike Crowley who left fear of the Last Judgment and war to people, Ahn delivered hopeful messages that can avoid misfortune but call humanity and luck. Among his supporters were his wife (oriental medical doctor) who he met at an oriental medical university when he was a lecturer of Eastern Philosophy. It is said that Ahn has an ability to read invisible things which he acquired during his wandering life. The world often denounced his ability as humbug but it was nevertheless recognized by authoritative organizations and academic societies with which he could be able to give a lot of lectures and contribution to media. Ahn says "my life is my work". He met the last Chinese magical person in China Town when he was 18 and realized the concept of Kudzu Brush. He then worked really hard on Letter Painting, the art form to write and draw special wish and ideology for protecting the nation from foreign invasion. He started it as a hobby but he drew public attention by expressing it through the method of calligrapher Taedong Yang. He painted his works in naked body after a bath and these were exclusively recognized in Eruga and Horu in Japan.

Spreading Kudzu Brush that lives and breathes

As a researcher, Ahn says 'strong and divine' for kudzu root which is the most important element of Kudzu Brush. It takes five to six days to save the original texture of kudzu through hammering and soaking it in water. That way, one can save fantastic sense of brush as if cluster of stars embroidering the universe. He has done this work for 50 years by hand. Unlike mass-produced brushes, he used kudzu brush, which usually was kept for collection, to express powerful energy and its charm. While normal brushes stink when in ink for a long time, kudzu brush never changes its quality for a thousand years. But you should put energy of heaven and earth into the brush to make a right work and it is shown in black and white. Kudzu Brush is divided into three styles: 'Seowachae' expressed like a painting by a stroke, 'Hwaseochae' a painting within a painting, 'Hoewachae' that transcends Hwaseochae. Ahn learned the thousands of years of old ancient Chinese royal styles and practiced it for 10 hours a day and he revealed it in his 'Naked Body Exhibition' in 2008 for the first time to the world. His works of Cave Mural, Hieroglyphic, Earthenware Character, Metal Epigraph, and Shell-and-Bone Characters, were even spread to Shanghai, China, the home of Kudzu Brush. Ahn says "the energy and beauty of kudzu brush should be appreciated by directly seeing and feeling it. Various energies in each line give different appreciation." Ahn also has won numerous prizes for twenty one times in many places including Japan, Paris and London. His philosophy of life and works have been appeared on TV in Korea, China and Japan and he built his popularity through more than 2,000 lectures and art works. But he says "I want more recognition for kudzu brush than myself." Studying in Royal Graduate School of Art in Paris, Harvard Business School, and Department of Theater and Film at NYU's graduate school might have helped him gain a good reputation but, he firmly believes that his works tell everything at the end of the day. This also is the reason he puts the moments and souls of living things into his photos. These photos are called 'e-power photo' and it is suggesting a new creative culture through his curatoring process. He pursued so called total art package and is now doing it in the form of total exhibition to suit the new world. Like he was the leader of positive and powerful Kudzu Brush in the 80s, Power Korea supports Ahn to be remembered as a pioneer of new art in the future.
