‘철학’을 담아 공감 이끌어내는 일러스트레이터, 우인덕 작가

인물의 특징이 되는 요소를 포착해 그리는 캐리커처는 보는 이들에게 친근감을 주고, 사진에 비해 주목성과 차별성이 좋다. 이러한 특성 때문에 일반인들은 물론이고 유명인들을 묘사하는 캐리커처가 지속적인 인기를 얻고 있다. 우인덕 작가(필명 크레옹)는 월간 파워코리아 박근혜 대통령 캐리커처를 비롯해 일러스트레이션, 만평 등 다양한 분야에서 자신만의 참신한 화풍을 발전시키며 주목받고 있는 작가다.

사실적이면서도 회화적 화풍으로 인물의 철학까지 표현하여 전달
일반적으로 ‘캐리커처’에 대해 생각해볼 때 쉽게 떠오르는 이미지는 일종의 만화적인 표현이나 과장하거나 왜곡해 표현하는 것으로, 예를 들면 코를 크게 그리거나 넓은 이마를 강조하는 등 인물의 특징이 되는 신체부위를 부각해서 그린 작품들이 많다. 그러나 우인덕 작가가 그리는 인물들은 이런 만화적 표현과는 다소 거리가 있다. 우 작가는 대상이 되는 인물의 특징을 거의 실사에 가깝게 세밀한 방법으로 표현해내는데 그의 10년 여 경력 중 절반 이상을 지금의 스타일을 확립하는 데 투자했다. 그에 따르면 “캐리커쳐는 또 다른 커뮤니케이션의 수단이 될 수 있는데 너무 희화하거나 과장되게 그렸을 때 나타나는 폐해가 있다. 희화시키는 부분들이 대상이 되는 주인공들한테는 부정적으로 다가가는 면이 있었다”고 한다.

우 작가는 미술대학 출신으로 대학원에서 광고를 전공하고 작품 활동과 함께 광고회사를 운영하고 있는 중견 작가다. 인물을 희화화하지 않는 대신 사실적으로 묘사하며, 동시에 그림 특유의 깊은 맛을 전달하는 우 작가의 스타일은 다수의 연예인과 기업인, 정치인, 노동계 인물들의 러브콜을 받아왔다. 은행 노동조합 선거 관련 캐리커처를 그리던 일화를 떠올리며 우 작가는 “여러 가지 동작과 표정을 스무 컷 가까이 그리면서, 초상화처럼 멈춰 있는 캐리커처가 아니라 움직임을 가진 캐리커처를 연구하려고 했다”는 이야기를 전했다. 이처럼 대상의 철학과 생각까지 표현해 전달하고 서로가 행복해질 수 있는 인물화를 그리는 것이 우 작가의 목표다.

캐리커처 인식 제고를 위해 타인과 호흡하는 우인덕 작가우 작가는 최근까지 한양대학교, 단국대학교, 계원조형예술대학 등에서 미술일반과 광고 홍보, 아이디어 발상 등에 대한 강의를 통해 후학 양성에도 힘썼다. 그 뿐 아니라 다수의 공공기관과 신문사, 언론사 등에서도 초빙 강의를 통해 일러스트레이션의 장점을 널리 알렸다. 본인의 작품 활동만으로도 하루가 모자라지만, 우 작가는 캐리커처와 일러스트레이션의 가치를 조금 더 널리 알리고 인식을 높이기 위해 이러한 외부활동들을 꾸준히 이어가고 있다.

“광고 쪽에서는 캐리커처나 일러스트 작품들이 제대로 비용을 받고 판매됩니다. 보통 매체비에 따라 제작비를 투여하게 되는데 신문이나 잡지 등의 메인 페이지에 사진 대신 캐리커처가 들어가서 그만큼의 전달 효과가 있다면 그 비용을 받을 자격이 있거든요. 그 적정선을 찾는다면 작가들도 지속적으로 경제활동을 이어갈 수 있습니다. 인물의 특징이 정확하게 살아나면서 철학이 담긴 캐리커처는 사진보다 좋은 효과를 나타내는 경우가 많습니다. 사진이야 워낙 흔하고 누가 찍었는지도 모르지만, 캐리커처는 아무나 흉내 낼 수 있는 게 아니거든요”

우 작가는 지속적으로 캐리커처를 제작하며 본인이 가진 재능으로 사회단체 등에서도 그림을 가르칠 계획을 갖고 있다. 그는 “다음 달부터 마석에 위치한 예닮교회로 그림을 가르치러 갑니다. 그림을 그린다는 것은 말을 하고 글을 쓰는 것과 다름없는 커뮤니케이션의 방법이거든요. 아이들의 정서 발달이나 자기 표현력을 향상시키는 데 도움이 된다고 생각해서 교회나 사회단체 등에 그림지도를 할 예정입니다”라고 본인의 계획을 이야기했다.

한편, 우 작가는 지난해 충무로 카페 전시회에 이어 올해에도 길거리 전시회나, 사회단체, 교회 등 오프라인 전시회를 이어갈 계획이다. 주로 온라인 매체를 통해 연재가 이루어지는 캐리커처의 특성 상, 인지도가 있는 작가들이라도 직접 관객들을 만나기 쉽지 않은 현실에 깊이 착안한 것이다. “한 작품을 그릴 때 20시간 가까이를 꼬박 투자한다”는 우 작가는 캐리커처에 대한 대중의 인식을 높이기 위해 앞으로도 여러 현실참여 활동을 이어갈 예정이다. 그의 작품들이 많은 이들의 사랑을 받고, 그가 한국을 대표하는 캐리커처 작가로 거듭나게 될 날을 기대해 본다.

Generally speaking, people think of manga or exaggerated and distorted images when they hear the world caricature. It is a rendered image showing the features of its subject in a simplified or exaggerated way. But Woo's works are a little different from this because he rather depicts the subject in detail like a painting. He spent more than half of his 10 year career to establish the current style. Woo says "caricature is a means of communication but if it is expressed too pictorial or too exaggerated, it gives rather negative images about the person." Woo is an art college graduate who majored in Advertisement at a post graduate school and is running an advertising company alongside his art work activities. Thanks to his detailed style, he has been offered many orders from celebrities, businessmen, politicians and renowned figures in the labor world. Remembering an anecdote in labor union election, he says "I drew various gestures and facial expression on almost 20 sheets of paper in an attempt to make a living caricature." It is Woo's goal to create a work that can deliver philosophy of the person precisely.

Breathing together with people to improve recognition of caricature
Woo also has been fostering younger students through his lectures on, advertisement and idea at various universities including Hanyang University, Dankook University and Kywon University of Art and Design. In addition to this, he gave numerous lectures on illustration at public organizations and media companies. 24 hours a day is not even enough for creating his own art work but he carries out these activities in order to spread the value of caricature and illustration. Woo says "the works of caricature and illustration are sold at a reasonable price in the commercial world. Normally, production cost is invested based on medium cost and if a caricature is on the front page of a newspaper and has its effect, it is the money worth paying for. If we find its optimum level, many illustrators and caricaturists can keep their job for a living. If the work contains the character and philosophy of the person it can be more effective than a photo. Photos are common nowadays and we don't even know who took them, but not everybody can do caricature." Meanwhile, Woo is planning to donate his talent to social organizations. He says "I'm going to teach caricature and illustration in a church in Maseok. To draw things is to communicate like we speak and write. It is helpful to improve expressiveness or emotional development of oneself." Woo held a cafe exhibition in Chungmuro last year and is planning to carry out street exhibition and off line exhibition at social organizations or church this year. This is because he deeply sympathize the reality that even famous caricaturists are not easy to directly meet with audience as the caricature itself normally is serialized in the media. Woo said that it takes 20 hours to finish a work but his passion on a variety of activities to increase its recognition will never be stopped.
