PVC창호계의 작지만 강한 파워 래핑기

비용, 시간, 효율, 기동성. 이 모든 분야에서 혁신을 이룬 PVC창호 래핑기기가 업계의 변화를 불러왔다. 제일산업의 차지철 대표는 기존 래핑기를 단 7번만 보고 만든 혁신적인 소형 래핑기로 알루미늄 시대에서 PVC로 대세를 옮겨 간 창호업계의 실력파로 인정받고 있다. ‘필요는 발명의 어머니’ 라는 표현처럼, 사용자와 제작자로서 느끼는 불편함을 획기적으로 개선한 차 대표의 아이디어와 위기극복, 경영 철학을 되짚어 본다.  

국내 최초, 초소형 PVC래핑기로 업계의 파격이 되다
PVC 창호 기술 대중화의 핵심은 PVC에 필름을 입히는 래핑 기술이다. 이 래핑 기술은 500가지가 넘는 창호 종류에다 PVC에 입힌 색상으로, 고전적인 형태에서 북유럽 스타일까지 다양한 컬러링 하우징을 시도할 수 있도록 했다. 다만 이러한 섀시 래핑 기술의 장점 속에는 최대 20m에 달하는 기기의 크기, 1주일에 달하는 작업시간이라는 걸림돌이 있었다. 제일산업의 차지철 대표는 한때 건축의 복층유리 관련 일을 하다 흑자부도를 당한 시련을 견디며 섀시로 전향했다. 그는 섀시 기술에서 개선점을 찾는데 골몰한 끝에 기존 장비의 단점을 효과적으로 개선해 냈다. 시행착오 끝에 2005년 경 완성된 차 대표의 기술로 래핑 기계 본체가 1.6m로 줄었으며, 래핑 공정을 완벽하게 소화하면서도 1톤 트럭에 실을 수 있는 크기라 이동도 쉬워진 것이다.

대기업의 테스트도 통과해 낸 신형 래핑기는 세팅 과정 시간도 20-40분에서 1-3분대로 줄어들어 업계의 비상한 관심을 끌었다. 래핑 속도도 분당 50m 선이라 가격과 효율에서 모두 만족스러운 수준으로 업그레이드되었다. 무엇보다 4,000만 원 대의 가격을 2,000만 원 대로 줄인 것이 원가 절감에 큰 도움이 되었다. 차 대표의 래핑기는 제일산업이 자리한 포천에서 명성을 얻기 시작해 서울, 부산, 제주도에 이르기까지 전국의 고객들로부터 꾸준히 사랑을 받고 있다. “단점을 모두 개선한 우리의 설비가 폭발적인 인기를 끌어 기존기기를 사용하는 주변의 래핑 업체들이 문을 닫을 정도였다. 소량주문도 가능하니 고객들의 부담이 줄었다. 2006년에는 섀시 래핑기로서는 처음으로 특허를 획득했고, 래핑업을 잘 몰라도 이해하기 쉬운 구조로 되어 있기에 전망이 밝다”

현재도 몰딩에 사용되는 기계를 섀시에 사용하는 경우가 많은데, 제일산업의 래핑기는 처음 만든 그대로도 불편 없이 사용할 수 있으며, 기계가 복잡해질수록 유지 보수, 수리에 문제가 많아지기에 오로지 래핑에만 특화된 기계로 완성했다고 한다. “우리 래핑기는 롤러 기둥이 기존 40-50개 선인 것에 비해 12개에 불과하다. 그럼에도 기존 기기와 똑같은 아웃풋을 만들어 내고 세팅 과정도 일괄 자동화되어 있다. 초기에는 의뢰에서 작업, 그리고 돌려받기까지 버리는 시간이 아까워 출장 래핑 서비스도 했다. 그것이 우리의 이름을 널리 알린 것이다. 지금은 더욱 견고한 결과물을 내기 위해 공장으로 거래처들을 불러 래핑을 하고, 불량률 없는 서비스라는 평가를 받으며 많은 거래처를 두고 있다” 아파트, 연립, 단독주택에서 독특한 코쿠닝까지, 대부분의 건축물에서는 알루미늄이 아닌 PVC를 사용하기에 래핑기의 장래는 밝다. 특히 제일산업의 래핑기는 3-4일이나 걸리는 작업량이 30분-1시간으로 단축되는데다, 노하우가 축적되어 거래를 할수록 신뢰를 쌓아 간다고 그는 전한다.

시련을 딛고 창조자의 긍지를 추진력 삼아 나아가다
차 대표의 승승장구에는 많은 시련도 있었다. 소형 트럭에 실린 그의 래핑기를 처음 본 사람들은 놀라움과 당혹감 속에서 적잖은 불신도 보여주었다. “트럭에 싣고 전국을 돌아다니는 래핑기였으니 처음에는 그럴 만 했다. 믿지 않으니 직접 세팅하고 래핑 과정을 시연했다. 깔끔한 마감 처리 덕분에 고객들이 만족하며 사용한다는 후일담이 속출하며 신뢰를 얻게 됐다. 주문이 폭주하기까지 정말로 발로 뛰는 과정을 거쳐야 했다.

그만큼 이 기술은 기존에 없는 새로움을 보여준 것이다” 의정부와 포천 일대 업계를 주름잡은 차 대표는 좋은 의도에서 기술을 공개했다가 낭패를 본 적도 있다. 래핑기술을 인정받고 타사 기술자에게 기술을 공개하는 과정에서, 비슷한 기기를 타사가 대기업에 납품하기 시작한 것이다. 1호 특허를 보유한 차 대표는 기업 내부에서만 기기를 사용할 것이라고 생각했지만, 모방 기술로 브랜딩화해 판매에 나서자 이대로는 안 되겠다고 판단, 대응에 나섰다. “해당 기업에서는 사과를 받았지만, 대기업과의 싸움은 만만치 않았다. 게다가 발주 과정에서 많은 이들이 끼어 있어 대기업이 아닌 발주자가 책임지는 결과가 나로서는 마음 편치 않았다. 더군다나 대기업의 막강한 변호단 파워로 1심은 무혐의가 나왔고 항소에는 8,000만원이 추가로 든다. 일련의 과정을 겪으면서, 현재 법 상 ‘특허’라는 것이란 침해당한 소기업의 권리를 보호하는 것이 아니라, 어떤 기술을 오픈시켜 공론화 시키는 게 주목적인 것 같다는 생각에서 억울함을 느꼈다” 비록 현실은 매서울지라도, 차 대표는 아픔을 딛고 초심으로 다시 일어서기로 했다.

‘최초의 초소형 래핑 기계 창조자’라는 긍지로 말이다. 자체 제작하여 래핑업과 설비 관련 일을 동시에 할 수 있는 업체가 바로 제일산업이기 때문이다. 그래서 차 대표는 절치부심 속에서도, 그를 향한 믿음에서 희망을 얻고 지방 중심으로 영업하여 전국에 전용 래핑기를 50여 대가 넘게 판매할 수 있었다. 더욱이 비용절감과 성능개선을 이뤄낸 차 대표의 기술력에는 어려운 시절에도 믿고 따라준 직원들이 든든하게 버티고 있었다. “규모가 작은 회사라고 경영기본기까지 무시해서는 안 된다고 본다. 특히 우리 같은 기업은 대표를 믿고 따라준 직원들이 가장 큰 자산이다. 그래서 장기근속이나 실적이 좋은 직원들에게 주는 해외 포상휴가라든가, 개인 보험을 내 주는 복리후생이 아깝지 않다. 우리 직원들의 기쁨이 내게는 행복과 안정을 준다” 마치 제일산업의 래핑기 한 대가 기존 래핑기기 여러 대 몫을 해 내는 ‘일당 백’이듯이. 그렇기에 더 큰 꿈을 꿀 수 있게 됐다. 소기업을 울리는 국내 시장을 실력으로 극복하고자 차 대표는 래핑기를 리뉴얼 하고 있다. “래핑기의 공간 활용도를 더 높인 제품을 출시할 것이다. 아직도 많은 업자들은 작은 부지에서 운영하는 입장이다. 비용과 공간 문제에서 오는 부담을 줄여 주겠다” 또한 실내 인테리어와 병행해 미적 가치가 중요시되는 섀시 시장에 적극 대응하는 능력으로, 앞서가는 기술력을 신속하게 적용하리라는 각오가 대단하다. 섀시 시장 판도를 바꾼 차 대표의 날카로운 눈썰미가, 더 큰 시장의 판을 바꾸는 혜안이 되리라 기대한다.

A small but strong wrapper in PVC fittings industry

PVC fittings wrapper that has innovated such aspects as cost, time, efficiency and mobility has brought a change to the industry. Cha ji-chul, president of Cheil Industrial Co, is a new hero in the fittings industry, who has moved the trend from aluminum to PVC with an innovative small-size wrapper made after he looked into the existing ones just seven times. Like the maxim “Necessity is the mother of invention,” let’s look at the idea, overcoming crisis and management philosophy of president Cha, who has dramatically improved the inconveniences felt by both user and manufacturer.    

Became an exception in the industry with a mini PVC wrapper for the first in the nation 
The core of popularizing PVC fittings is the wrapping technology of coating PVC with films. This wrapping technology allows colors on PVC for over 500 kinds of fittings with diverse coloring housings from classical to North European styles. However, in the merits of chassis wrapping technology protruded a demerit of the big size amounting to 20m and work time taking up a week. President Cha of Cheil Industrial had met with insolvency by paper profits in the service related to pair glass of construction and then turned to chassis. After troubling himself in finding improvements from chassis technology, he was able to work out the shortcomings of the existing equipment. After trial and error, president Cha completed a new technology in 2005, which reduced the body of wrapping machine to 1.6m and facilitated moving with the small size of being carried on a 1-ton truck not to mention a perfect accommodation for the wrapping process. This new wrapper passing through the test from large enterprises also reduced the time for setting process from 20-40 minutes to 1-3 minutes, drawing an unusual attention from the industry.

With a wrapping speed of 50m per minute, it upgraded both the price and efficiency to a satisfactory level. Among others, it helped to cut down cost by reducing the price in the range of 40 million won to that of 20 million. President Cha’s wrapper won fame first at Pocheon, a base for Cheil Industrial, and has become popular among customers around the country including Seoul, Busan and Jeju-do. “Since our equipment improving all setbacks won such popularity that nearby wrapping companies using the existing equipment even closed the shop. With small-quantity order possible, customers became able to reduce burden on their part. In 2006, we obtained a patent for the first time with a chassis wrapper and this has a bright future because of the structure easy to understand even without good knowledge of wrapping business.”

Even today, there are many cases where a machine for molding is used for chassis. However, Cheil Industrial’s wrapper can be used without inconvenience with the original as it was made. He says that he completed this machine intended only for wrapping because the more complex, the more problems in maintaining and repairing the machine. “Compared with the existing wrappers with 40-50 roller props, ours has only twelve. Still, it makes the same output as the existing ones with a setting process all automated. In the beginning, to save the time wasted for inquiry, work and taking back, we even outreached for wrapping service, which promoted our name widely.

Now, to make a more solid output, we give wrapping by inviting our customers to the factory and have many customers with a review of zero defective rate. This wrapper has a bright future since most buildings use PVC, not aluminum, from apartment to tenement house, detached house and the unique cocooning. Especially, Cheil Industrial’s wrapper reduces the workload from 3-4 days to 0.5-1 hour, and with the knowhow piled up, we are building the more confidence as we make more business,” He said. 

To proceed with the impetus of pride as creator overcoming hardship 
President Cha’s successive victories included not a few ordeals. One who saw his wrapper being carried on a small truck showed a considerable distrust in surprise and embarrassment. “Since it was a wrapper moving around the country carried on a truck, the response was understandable at first. Because of their distrust, he made a setting himself and demonstrated the process of wrapping. The word-of-mouth of using satisfactorily because of the neat finishes followed on end to win me confidence.

Until the pressure of orders, I had no choice but to go through by running, literally. So much this technology was absolutely new to the world.” President Cha, who had dominated the industry in the area of Euijeongboo and Pocheon, was once in big trouble after releasing the technology with good intentions. In the course of making the technology known to an engineer from another company after winning the recognition of the wrapping technology, that company began to deliver a similar apparatus to a large enterprise. Being possessed of the No. 1 patent, President Cha thought the company would use the machine only within the enterprise, but the company set out for selling in its brand with an imitation technology.

Now President Cha went out to counter the company because he couldn’t put up with the loss. “ I got apology from the relevant company but it was not easy to fight with a large enterprise. Moreover, in the course of placing orders, many were included and I felt uneasy to see the result of holding ordering ones responsible, not a large enterprise. To make matters worse, the first trial came out free from suspicion with a tremendous power of the defense counsel of a large enterprise and an appeal to a higher court was going to take additional 80 million won. Going through the series of things, I felt mortified thinking that the so-called patent under the current laws doesn’t protect a small company with its rights infringed but its main purpose seems to make public by opening up a certain technology.”

Despite the tough reality, President Cha decided to stand back on his own overcoming the pain with the pride of the creator of the first-time mini wrapper. It is because Cheil Industrial was a company that can perform both wrapping business and equipment-related work based on self-manufacture. By gritting his teeth, he was given hope from the belief and did business focusing on the countryside and was able to sell over 50 exclusive-use wrappers around the country. In addition, the technology of President Cha, who achieved cost reduction and improvement of performance, was accompanied by his personnel who had been following him even in the time of difficulty. “Even a small company cannot ignore the basics of management, I think. Especially, for our company, the staff who has followed the president in confidence is the biggest asset. So I don’t spare a bonus vacation for overseas to workers with a good record of performance and job benefits of personal insurance. Our personnel’s joy gives me happiness and stability.”

He became able to have a larger dream just as one wrapper of Cheil Industrial equals several units of wrappers as a match for a hundred. To overcome the domestic market which sways over a small company with his own strength, President Cha is making a renewal of the wrapper. “I will launch a product with a higher space suability of the wrapper. Still, many contractors are operating on a small lot. I will reduce the burden coming from the problem of cost and time.” Besides, together with interior design, he is determined to apply technology ahead of others with his ability to respond to the chassis market where aesthetic value matters. It is expected that President Cha’s acumen that changed the trend of the chassis market will change the trend of a larger market, too.
