Korea's first high quality theme cafe where you can enjoy true Gundam
"Gundam is not an otaku toy but is a culture that embraces collection and hobby"
The Gundam theme cafe 'CODE-G' CEO Kyungmin Kang

The theme cafe made of the three colors of the first Gundam
There was all-weather fandom for Marvel series in the West 20 year ago, but there were dynamic human type weaponed robots competing each other in the East. When Great Mazinger and Mechander Robot were fighting for the peace on Earth, Tomino Yoshiyuki's Mobile Suit Gundam changed the ways of thinking and created a view of the world that combined physics and astronomy and flew into the center of the universe. The children of the world learned about the remarkable activities of Gundam through character books and animation and there were captivated by it.

Those children are now in their mid 30s and each blog, related to Gundam fandom in Korea, has more than 50,000 members. As His Majesty of plastic models, Gundam has a wide fan base such as Gunpla. Also, being parents now means that more people will be the fans of Gundam and this was proved at 'Kidult & Hobby Expo 2015' held at COEX on 15 January where Gundam was the superstar. The CEO of CODE-G Kang, who was praised by the fans of plastic models, was also the Gundam generation. He is creating a value of hobbies in professionalism. He opened CODE-G in April 2014 in Yeosu-dong, Jungwon-gu, Seongnam City and the interior of the store is consisted of yellow, red and blue which are the colors of the first Gundam MG/RG version born in 1979.

More than 520 Gundams greet you when you get into the store. "It is a Gundam club house where you can rest and enjoy drinks. We know about the symbols and the variety of Gundam characters, and if we add the limited editions and transformation models also, the numbers will be paramount. However, despite the size of the market, people rather enjoy it at their home selling or buying it through their homepage. People can make and paint the models but we are more specialized when it comes to displaying them to the public and we also exhibit 80 kinds of rare Gundam books and animations in the cafe."

Pursuing a fun-centered cafe culture that suits the sentiment of Koreans
Like most figurines, people enjoy Gundam by assembling at first, sticking the stickers to the body next, and then painting the body in earnest and the whole process becomes an ant lion´s pit like you are understood as an otaku. Kang said that he indulged in the process by spaying the body first, moved on to dull and glossy coloring, and then metallic coloring. These Gundams were sold out rapidly online and Kang was struck with an idea to open a Gundam cafe. "Most customers are those who knew my blog.

520 models in the cafe are all hand painted. The 100 square meter cafe can accommodate 45 people and we have many family, couple or circle customers. Some told me to take a ticket to enter the place like a museum but I liked a cafe better for popularizing Gundam. There might have been someone who wanted to open a cafe like me but most of them probably spent money on collecting or painting it. I did the same but I prepared for 10 years to open a cafe while doing three jobs." Thus born was CODE-G and it is now functioning as a total cultural space. Kang said "Japan, the originator of Gundam theme cafe and the home of Gundam, usually focused on selling and gave a lot of effort on display. Also, there were coffee shop-based theme cafes but they didn't have Gunpla or real models which was not what I wanted.

That was why I wanted to make my own cafe." It looks similar to a kids cafe but it combined the elements of a museum while also providing a stage for a performance or a magic show. "It's good for a fancy going out. We already received good feedbacks. On the occasion of participating in the Expo, we will launch a new menu which we have been preparing for a year. We added Latte, Lemonage, and cakes & snacks to the menu."

Connecting the tremendous popularity with franchising
Kang is particularly fond of the first Gundam and 00 Gundam (double Gundam). He tells about his goal as "my dream is to break the bad image of otaku but to promote Gundam modeling as a healthy culture and I want to spread it. That's why I'm also paying attention to make mug cups, key rings and hoods." In fact, there were cafes which displayed several Gundam models but they were all disappeared due to the advent of CODE-G. This means that CODE-G is recognized for its professionalism by the manias.

And this prompted Kang to jump into a franchise business. "We participated in the Expo by defeating large franchise cafes with our uniqueness. I was exhausted after I finished the display but our booth was filled up with people in reward for our hard work. The hosting organization asked us to join again next time and we were flooded with inquiries after the Expo." Subsequently, Kang successfully held two CODE-G Franchise Briefings on early this month at SC Bank. He introduced various blueprints of the business. The affiliated stores will have different themes, such as diorama style Gundam battle scenes for a large store, according to the location and characters of each store.

On the occasion of the successful Gundam-kit ($10) Experience Event, Kang is planning to hold a cultural event by inviting children in cooperation with community centers. Kang's ideas are creating a sensation in the start-up market and even Japan will be jealous of Gundam phenomenon in Korea in the near future.
