보수적 프랑스 미술계의 파격, 한국 최초로 SAF 심사위원 위촉되다
“기부와 봉사, 새로운 기법 연구로 충만한 예술가의 삶”

‘데시나스트리스’ 한미키 화가는 프랑스미술가협회(SAF)전에서 한국인 최초로 심사위원에 선정되었다. 데시나스트리스. 이 프랑스어를 우리 식으로 표현하자면 여성 데생 전문가를 부르는 경어다. 음악과 무용 분야에서는 바덴 뷔르템부르크에서 수여하는 캄머쟁어, 캄머탠처린 등의 왕실작위가 있는 반면, 시민이 피와 땀으로 쟁취한 자유의 나라인 프랑스 파리에서는 작위 대신 미술인들의 이름에 명예로운 호칭을 선물한다고 한다. 프랑스 미술계에서 놀라운 낭보를 가져온 한미키 화가가 그려온 은혜로움의 족적, 그리고 지난 27년간의 영광스런 예술 행보를 지면에 옮겨 본다.

고요한 아침의 나라에서 온 전위적 예술성을 인정받다
2014년 12월 20일. 프랑스에 첫 발을 내디딘 지 23년차를 며칠 앞둔 한미키(한국명 한미경) 화가는 프랑스미술가협회전 관계자들로부터 한국인으로 최초, 동양인으로서는 두 번째, 그리고 여성 최초로 심사위원에 위촉되었다는 통보를 받았다. 그 어떤 외부 요소를 배제한 순수 실력과 작품으로만 인정받은 낭보였다.

8할은 그랑팔레 르 살롱전에서 2009년에 받은 금상을 비롯해 은과 동을 모두 수상하고, 100여 년이 넘는 유서 깊은 살롱 드 오톰에서 회화 부문 최고 점수를 기록하며 당당히 작품을 전시할 자격을 얻은 놀라운 경력 덕분이다. 동양의 여성 피카소로 평가받는 독특한 작풍은 네오 큐비즘을 기반으로 구상화, 인상파, 사실화에서 독보적인 자기색채를 갖춘 고차원적 전위성에서 나왔다. 뛰어난 초현실화가일수록 미술 기본기를 어릴 때 이미 완성하는 경향이 있다.

예를 들면 정확한 데생을 바탕으로 기본 바탕을 완성한 뒤 재구성하는 화법의 대명사인 피카소는 4세 때 기본기를 완성한 후 10대 때 4차원 화풍을 갖게 되었다고 한다. 한 화가 역시 만 3세의 나이로 사물을 실제와 유사하게 그리면서 자신의 재능을 발견했다고 한다. 대부분 미술에 재능 있는 지망생들이 입시미술과 선긋기 일색으로 치달을 고교 시절, 한 화가는 기본 데생을 모두 끝내고 미술에 대한 이론과 실기까지 독학으로 완성을 해 둔 상태였다.

“프랑스행을 택하기 전, 3년 간 새벽 6시부터 밤 12시까지 미술학원을 운영해 내 집을 마련할 정도로 능력을 인정받았고 프랑스행도 내 힘으로 준비했다. 나는 날 때부터 미술을 하기 위해 태어났다는 확신이 있었다” 프랑스에서 한 화가는 충분한 기본기로 서양의 큐비즘을 깊이 있게 표현한다는 평가를 받았다.

한 화가 스스로도 열정적으로 인상파, 신인상파, 후기인상파 등을 공부하며 유럽식의 ‘형태를 부수고, 다시 재구성하는’ 작법의 매력을 파고들었다. “본질은 같지만 표현방식이 다르고, 테크닉이 달라지는 것이 재미있어서 공부하고 아주 많이 그렸다. 과학과 기하학을 담은 예술, 현대적인 미술을 추구하고 싶었다”는 한 화가는 표현주의와 인체의 신비, 그리고 감정과 사랑을 넘나드는 선과 색배합의 미학을 각고의 노력 끝에 완성했다. 그래서 한 화가의 작품들이 보수적인 프랑스 평단의 격찬을 이끌며 마침내 심사위원 자리에 등극한 것은, 우리나라로 치면 국립 예술단체의 주역자리를 외국인 신분으로서 차지한 정도의 파급효과 크기와 같다고 볼 수 있다. 고요한 아침의 나라에서 온 한국인이, 서양예술의 본거지에서 노력하여 당당히 실력을 인정받으며 등극한 것이다.

신앙과 봉사, 예술 창조혼을 이끌어가는 두 가지 단어
20여 년간 파리와 서울을 잇는 미술적 가교 역할을 한 한 화가는 최근 과학과 미술의 접목을 시도하고 있다. 한 때 자연과학에 빠져들어 의과대학 진학을 꿈꾼 적도 있었던 그가 말하는 과학이란, 빛의 영상을 투사해 대상의 표면을 바뀌도록 하는 3D영상기법을 일컫는다. 이미 한 화가는 2.5D의 영역에서 아라베스크 문양을 작품에 접목해 절제와 파격 속에서 눈을 뗄 수 없는 감각을 선보이는데 성공한 적이 있다. 프랑스 현지의 시각을 읽기 위해 연간 100회가 넘는 전시회를 찾았고 끊임없이 붓을 움직였다. 그러한 창작을 이끄는 힘은 정신적인 충만함에서도 나온다.

미술적 재능을 신이 주신 재능으로 믿고 마땅히 이웃과 나누어야 한다고 믿는 한 화가의 신앙심은 생각보다 넓게 열려 있고 깨어 있다. 작품의 중요한 소재이기도 한 ‘인간’의 아름다움에 경탄하는 것도, 한 화가의 종교적 사랑과 일맥상통한다. 그래서 한 화가는 2000년대 말 한국 경매에 그림이 역수출되어 명성을 얻고 나서부터는 기부와 나눔으로 사랑을 표현하기 시작했다. 데생 봉사활동이 극에 달했던 2011년에는, 보건복지부 선정 제 1회 행복나눔인으로 선정되어 장관상을 수상했다. 2012년에는 사랑의 열매 단체에 작품 100점의 판매수익을 기부했고, 사람을 향한 애정이 재능기부로도 이어졌음을 꾸준히 증명해 오고 있다.

“프랑스로 가기 전에도 미술학원에 다닐 형편이 안 되는 아이들을 찾아가 그림을 가르친 적이 있다. 배움의 기쁨을 나눈다는 것이 얼마나 큰 행복인가. 그래서 지금도 복지원을 방문해 아이들에게 데생을 가르치고 있다. 작년 세월호 참사에서 못다 핀 희생자들 중 디자인과 미술에 재능이 있었던 아이들도 있었다고 한다. 그 사실에 몹시 마음이 아팠다. 예술적 실천은 과연 무엇인지 스스로에게 질문하는 계기가 되기도 했다” 사람과의 삶을 통해 한 화가는 성당에 들어갈 때마다 차분해지고 편안해 진다고 한다. “노트르담 성당에서 기도할 때, 하나님을 두 번 뵈었다.

그 신성한 체험으로 말미암아 앞으로도 하나님과 함께하고 그 진리의 말씀에 따라 살 것이다” 지난 23년 간 연간 2-3회 씩 꾸준히 한국에 방문해 온 한 화가는 앞으로도 그림을 통해 국가의 발전에 기여하고 싶다는 뜻을 전한다. “마치, 온 몸으로 댐의 균열을 막아내 마을을 구한 어느 소년처럼 작은 힘이나마 나라를 위해 쓰고 싶다. 나는 수없이 그림을 그리고 발로 뛰며 혼자 이렇게까지 성장했다. 그렇기에 미술에 국가적 지원이 필요하다는 것에 공감하며, 나의 작품에 대해서도 국가적 책임과 소유권이 있다고 믿는다” 한 화가의 그림은 손끝에서, 그리고 가슴으로부터 나오고 있었다. 오로지 그림 한 길로 해외의 대가 반열에 오른 한 화가가 더 크고 웅장한 생의 그림을 완성할 순간이 기대된다.

- Dessinastress, Han Micky, a painter residing in France
'Dessinastress' Han Micky was chosen as the first judge of SAF. Dessinastress is an honorific word for a female dessin (drawing) specialist. There are royal titles such as Kammersaenger and kammertanzerin awarded in Baden-Württemberg, Germany for musicians and dancers but France gives honorary titles for artists instead. Power Korea delivers a good news of Han Micky and her 27 years of honorary artistic activities.

Avant-garde artistry from the land of the morning calm being recognized
Han Micky (Han -Mikyung), who has been in France for 23 years, received a letter on 20 December 2014 from SAF stating that she was chosen as the first female judge of SAF (also first as Korean, second as Asian). Without any other advantages, she was purely chosen for her artistic ability and works thanks to her winning of gold, sliver and bronze prizes at Grand Palais Le Salon in 2009 and to her receiving of the highest score in the painting sector at Salon D'Automne.

The idiom of Han is praised as the Asian Picasso and it came from high dimensional avant-garde that has unique colors in representational, impressionism and realism based on neo-cubism. Excellent surrealist painters tend to complete basic skills when they were young. Picasso, for example, completed the basic skills when he was four and obtained four dimensional style when in teenage.

Han also could depict objects like real when she was four and found her talent. When most would-be-artists high school students were focused on entrance examination and drawing of the lines, Han already finished dessin alongside theory and practical technique. "Before I decided to go to France, people recognized my ability for I ran an art academy from 6am till 9pm for three years and saved enough money even to buy a house and I also prepared the plan for studying in France all by myself.

I had confidence that I was born to be an artist." Han received good reviews in France that she could express cubism in depth. Han passionately studied on impressionism, neo-impressionism and post-impressionism and indulged in Europe style 'breaking the form and restructuring it'. "It was interesting that the essence was same but the methods of expression and technique were different. I wanted to pursue a modern art which embraces science and geometry." Han completed, after years of hard work, the esthetic of expressionism, the mystery of body, and lines & colors that cross over emotion and love.

Han's appointment as a judge of SAF has same ripple effect as if a foreigner is appointed as a leading role of a Korean national art organization. It means that an artist from the land of the morning calm has proved her ability in a foreign land on her own right.

 

The two words 'belief' and 'service' lead creative artistic spirit
Han has been playing a bridge role to connect Seoul with Paris for 20 years and is now trying to match science with art. She once dreamed to be a medical doctor and she explains about science in her terms as a 3D imaging technology which changes objects by using images of lights.

She already successfully applied arabesque patterns to the area of 2.5D to express moderation and exception. She visited galleries in France more than 100 times a year to keep with the trend. The power of her creation comes from spiritual abundance. She believes God granted her a talent which she feels obliged to share with others. The human beauty expressed in her works is connected to her religious love. When her works were sold in Korea in late 2000, she started to express her love through donation and sharing.

She was chosen as the 1st happiness sharer from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and awarded the Minister's Prize in 2011 for her dessin service activity. She also donated the profits of 100 of her sold works to Love Fruit Organization in 2012. "I once taught children who couldn't afford an art academy in Korea before I went to France. How big a happiness it is to share the pleasure of learning. I still do it by visiting welfare facilities. I heard some students who died by Sewol ferry had talent in art and I was heart broken. It was a momentum to ask myself about artistic practice." Han said whenever she enters to a church she feels calm and comfortable. "I saw God twice when I prayed in Cathedrale Notre-Dame. On the occasion of having an audience with God, I decided to live with God and follow his words." Han has been visiting Korea two or three times a year for 23 years and she has a will to contribute for the development of Korea through art. "Like the boy who blocked the hole of a damn with his body, I'd like to use my talent for my country.

I grew up this much by my own hard work. That's why I agree that government level support for art is needed and I believe my works are bound to national ownership and responsibility." Han's works come from the tip of her fingers and her heart. Power Korea expects Han will complete a magnificent painting of her life in the future.
