전흥공예 임병시 대표
전통공예와 현대과학 접목해 우리 고유의 아름다움 전파한다
문화재 복원·보수, 조형, 불교미술의 대가
전국 각지 박물관에는 우리 조상님들이 만들었던 불상과 조각 등 미술품들이 전시되어 있다. 이 유물들은 모두 복원 과정을 거친 것으로, 우리나라 박물관에 전시되어 있는 불교 미술작품들 중 전흥공예 임병시 대표에 의해 복원된 작품들이 많다. 임 대표의 전흥공예는 유물복제와 원형조각, 전시·조형, 설계·제작을 아우르는 토탈 조각 전문업체다. 설악산 신흥사 청동대불 조각, 일본 모리오까 청동대불 제작, 강원도 구월사 해수관음 용 조각, 춘천 공지천 조각공원 자격루 복원 제작, 시공 등 방대한 실적을 갖고 있다.
1996년부터 춘천국립박물관·김해국립박물관 등 유물복원 앞장서
충청남도 홍성이 고향인 임병시 대표는 방앗간을 하시던 부모님 덕분에 어릴 때부터 나무를 접할 기회가 많았다. 타고난 손재주가 있었던 것인지 어린 나이에도 직접 이런저런 물건들을 만들기 시작했고, 그렇게 시작된 목조공예의 길이 어느덧 현재까지 오게 됐다.
임 대표는 1980년 서울종합훈련원 목공예과에서부터 기술을 익혀 전국기능올림픽공예에서 수상하는 등의 기록을 남겼다. 임 대표는 또 조소와 석고 등의 조금 더 자유로운 방식을 시도해보기 위해 김용섭 선생님 밑에서 일하며 작품을 배우기도 했다. 임 대표는 "나무와 달리 흙은 깎아나가며 만들되 부족하다는 느낌이 들면 다시 붙여가며 원하는 감정을 표현하기에 좋았다"는 말을 전했다.
그렇게 쌓인 노하우를 바탕으로 임 대표는 1990년 문화재 복제․복원 및 조형 작업을 담당하는 회사인 전흥공예를 창업했다. 1996년부터 대전 엑스포 우주왕복선, 인천시 자유공원 학도 호국단 기념동상 제작 및 춘천국립박물관․김해국립박물관․부산복천박물관․부산경성대학교 유물복원 등의 작업을 이어갔다.
"세상에서 가장 힘든 작업이 부처님 조성이라고 하는데 부처님의 얼굴에는 희로애락이 있습니다. 작업을 하는 사람은 깨끗한 마음과 정성, 공과 기를 담아 최선을 다해 작품을 하는 것이며, 작품 완성이 됐을 때 스님과 신도들이 한결같이 찬사를 보낼 때 보람을 느낍니다. 그리고 내 작품을 많은 사람들이 공유하고 함께 즐길 수 있으면 좋겠습니다"
전통공예와 현대과학 접목, 수작업과 기계작업 병행하며 정밀도 높여
현재 우리나라의 박물관 중 임 대표의 손길이 닿지 않은 곳이 없다고 해도 손색이 없을 정도이며, 그는 서울 역사박물관 에도 많은 공헌을 했다. 유물보존과 목공예․금속공예 등의 작업은 과거에 있었던 것을 고스란히 되살리는 것이기도 하지만 동시에 장인의 독창성을 발휘해 예술성을 나타내는 것이기도 하다. 임 대표는 서울 과학 기술 대학교 IT디자인대학원에서 최고 전문가 과정을 수료하고 공예정보디자인학과를 졸업하는 등 전통공예에 현대과학을 접목하고자 했으며, 수작업 과정을 연마하는 만큼 기계 작업에도 박차를 가했다.
"복원작업이나 공예를 하면서 느낀 기계작업의 장점은 정밀도입니다. 하나의 작품을 완성하기 위해서는 비례균형을 깨뜨리지 않는 것이 무엇보다 중요한데, 처음부터 사람이 하게 되면 비례균형이 깨지고 열 번, 백 번씩 손이 가는 결과를 낳습니다. 시간, 재료, 능력절감에 도움이 된다고 할 수 있겠죠. 모든 일에 열심히 노력하고 남보다 부지런히 새로운 것을 익혀야 저의 작품을 통해 다른 사람들에게 감동을 줄 수 있습니다"
임 대표는 또 본인의 지식을 바탕으로 3D 프린트, 옥가공기, 금속가공기, 스티로폼 가공기, 인쇄기, 조각기, 재질에 구애를 받지 않는 기기 등을 직접 제작도 하고 있다. 끊임없는 연구와 노력이 이뤄낸 성과로, 대기업 및 중소업계에서 임 대표에게 제품 관련 문의가 빗발칠 정도라고 한다.
“전통예술의 계승·발전 위해 신진 작가들 생각 열어야”
기본 잃지 않고 꾸준한 연구 통해 전통예술의 아름다움 알린다
유물 보존과 공예의 외길을 35년 동안 묵묵히 걸어오면서 임 대표는 전통 예술의 우수함을 다시금 깨달았다. 옛날에 만들어진 공예품들은 오랜 실패의 과정을 반복한 만큼 공간과 비례균형 등이 잘 어우러져 있지만 현재의 디자인적 기호에 맞춰진 작품들은 오히려 공간과 어우러지기 쉽지 않다는 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 임 대표는 “신진 작가들이 많은 경험을 하고 생각을 열어 발전해야 한다”고 다시 한 번 강조했다.
“요즘은 정성보다 상업성이 더 많은 비중을 차지하게 된 것 같아 안타깝습니다. 가장 중요한 것은 기본에 충실한 점인 것 같습니다. 어떤 일을 해도 기본을 잃지 않는 정신만 있으면 모방과 창조도 가능합니다. 창조만이 능사가 아니라 직접 노력해서 얻는 경험을 통해 만들어지는 것이 가치가 더 있다고 봅니다”
꾸준한 작업을 통해 몇 천점에 달하는 테마의 작품을 보유한 임 대표는 향후 자라나는 어린이와 청소년들을 위한 개인박물관을 만드는 꿈을 갖고 있다. 언제나 진보적인 생각으로 글로벌 시대에 맞춰 꾸준한 노력과 연구를 게을리 하지 않는 것이 임 대표의 비결이다. “목공예 전공자로서 따뜻한 나무 조각의 매력을 잊지 않고 있다”고 이야기하는 임 대표는 한편 한류문화 확산에 발맞춰 국제적인 행사를 통해 전통 문화예술 작품을 세계에 알릴 준비를 하고 있다. 우리 전통 문화의 아름다움을 알리고 국위선양을 위해 불철주야 노력하는 임 대표의 행보가 기대된다.

The master of restoration & repair of cultural assets, modeling, and Buddhist art
The museums in Korea display fine arts such as statue of the Buddha and sculptures made by our ancestors. But they all went through restoration process and many of them went through the hands of Byeongsi Im, the CEO of JeonHeung Total Art Company which provides services such as duplication of relics, original sculpture, exhibition and modeling, and design and production. They carried out various projects including the Bronze Buddha of Shinheung Temple in Seorak Mountain, Japan Morioka Bronze Buddha, the dragon of Haesu Gwaneum Statue of Guwol Temple in Gangwon Province and the restoration of Jagyeongnu in the Sculpture Park, Gonggi Chun, Chuncheon City.

Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province is Im's home town. He had many chance to meet trees thanks to his parents who ran a mill. He started enjoying making things and this became his destiny. He learned skills in Woodcraft Department at Seoul Total Training Center in 1980 and awarded from National Vocational Training Competition. He also learned from Yongsup Kim to try sculpture and plaster freely. Im said "unlike a tree, clay can be reformed as much as I want and it was good to express my emotion."
Based on this know-how, Im established JeonHeung Total Art Company in 1990 to do duplication & restoration of cultural asset and modeling. He has done various projects including the Spaceship of Deajeon Expo, and the commemorative statue of the Student National Defense Corps in Free Park, Incheon City since 1996. "It's said that the most difficult work in the world is Buddhist statue but his face has various emotions.
Only when the craftsman carried out with a clean and sincere heart and does his best, he/she can feel worth when being praised by monks and followers. And I hope many people will enjoy my works and share it with others."
Increasing precision through combination of hand & machine and traditional crafts & modern science
Most museums in Korea has, one way or the other, a touch of Im and he also contributed for Seoul Museum of History. Im's job is to restore the original form but at the same time it requires a creativity. Im finished the Professional Course of IT Design Graduate School at Seoul National University of Science & Technology and majored in Crafts Information Design. He tried to combine hand work with machine work and traditional crafts with modern science. "The advantage of machine work is precision. It's important not to break the balance to complete a work but human hand usually makes a lot of mistakes and waste of time. But machine saves time and material, and increase efficiency.
We have to work hard and learn different things to give impression to people." Im also, based on his knowledge, makes various devices by himself such as 3D print and processing machinery for jade, metal, polystyrene and carving which are not limited by materials. Thanks to his continuous R&D, Im is flooded with inquiries about his products from major and small & medium companies.

During 35 years of his career, Im realized one more time about the excellence of our traditional art. Old handcrafts have a good sense of space and balance through a long process of failure but design-centered modern works have difficulty to harmonize with space. Im said "promising craftsmen should experience a lot and open their mind to grow themselves. It's regretful that market potential is more important than sincerity nowadays.
But the most important thing is to be faithful to the basics. If we don't lose this we can be able to copy and create. If we make things by trying hard and experience, they will be more valuable." Im has thousands of works. He has a dream to build a private museum for children and young people. "As a woodcraft specialist, I never forget the charm of wood carving." Meanwhile, on the occasion of the Korean Wave, Im is preparing to spread traditional Korean art works to the world through international events.
