SMRTC answers for the safe and convenient public transportation

Real time monitoring system strengthens the safety of citizen

5678 SMRTC is called as Seoul citizen's feet. Inaugurated in last August, the president of SMRTC Taeho Kim came from KT and has a long experience working in IT. He installed Safety Management Monitoring System on a side of the wall which shows the operating conditions of 1,655 elevators, 10,128 platform doors, and 207 trains (1,617 compartments) in 157 stations of the line number 5 to 8 in real time. It is also installed in the head office to give 'suspension of operation' or 'alert' to deal with the problems immediately when it occurred. The system reduced the error of elevator by 6% over last year, and the length of time to solve it by 45%. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met Kim and heard about the details through interview. 

1. As the first civilian to take the CEO's role, how does it feel to run SMTRC?

I've been thinking about right management direction and development plan through business reports and field visits and have carried out a part reshuffle. I set up 'Safety Office' to improve safety and 'Strategic Business Division' to create sustainable profits in accordance with the 10 Safety Measures of SMTRC. I also reduced the size of head office and supporting departments in order to reinforce field workers instead so that we can give strengthened safety and services to the citizens. 

2. What is your management philosophy?

It is all about safety first. From the moment you get into a station to go out, you will be treated with our Risk Management System and Human Error Prevention. We plan to provide a clean and clear environment, improve the citizen's satisfaction level, and build integrated network to manage the facilities scientifically. We also  study on the business district around the stations so that we can create a station with a theme according to its history and character.

3. What does SMTRC contribute for the life and welfare of the citizen?

We, 6,500 staff, are doing our best to build safe urban railway, healthier enterprise, and interactive business culture. Our job is to take citizens to their destination safely and pleasantly. We also contribute for the development of society by carrying out various social contribution activities. 

4. What are the advantages of SMTRC compared to other organizations?

SMTRC is the largest urban railway operation organization which runs 4 lines (5 to 8), 157 stations on 162.2km, and 6 Car Depots. As a representative eco-friendly transportation, we won the Citation of Presidential Authority in the Green Management Sector of National Quality Renovation Awards at National Quality Management Competition on 19 November. We introduced Tunnel Monitoring System, as the most lines run through tunnels, to effectively manage the maintenance and safe operation. 

5. SMTRC is to be integrated with Seoul Metro. What is your stance on the plan?

There are some conflicting opinions on the issue but I basically agree with the plan. It will reduce inefficient expenditure and investment and will improve over all system. But we have to maximize the integration effect without artificial manpower adjustment. We have to implement the plan based on efficiency of management, sharing technology, strengthening safety, and improving services. 

6. How do you communicate with your staff?

I communicate with my staff through various staff-friendly events that can give energy to the organization. I start my day by checking 'Voice of Citizens (VOC)' to check their feedback and opinions. I give a free mobile coffee voucher to the staff who received compliments to encourage them. I also hold various events that can give laughs to the staff on a regular basis. In October last year, the Coffee Circle in the company held an event to share brewed coffee they made, and in November, we held the Bungeoppang Day (A Carp Cake Day) to help regional small business owners. We watch movies with our spouse together through the 'Serving the Queen of My House' event to have a meaningful time to think about family and we received a good feedback.

7. Lastly, what would you like to say as the CEO of SMTRC?

 

I think 'one step by ten people is more important than ten steps of myself alone'. I always work together with staff for change, innovation and capability. We will not be satisfied in our short-term achievements but keep building up the foundation for sustainable management and growth. 

As we were closing the interview, Kim told us a good news. If a train gets suspended for 10 minutes, it is called 'Service Disruption' but between 11 December 2013 and 23 December 2014 there has been none of the case for 377 days. Kim kept emphasizing on 'safety' during the interview and he has finished the preparation for the enterprise to be reborn as a true public enterprise. Power Korea wishes Kim and SMTRC a safer and prosperous 2015.
