A story about dancer Park Si-jong

Park Si-jong, president of Park Si-jong Dance Troupe

It may well be worth self-respect and one’s ideal land to receive awards at every kind of contest for an artist who is very much on the move. President Park Si-jong also expressed her honor for winning awards so far. However, the magazine can assert that there is more to her because behind her current standing and gorgeous award-winning parade, there were numerous anguishes and efforts accompanied for such a long time. Listening to her own story of Park Si-jong as a person, rather than as a dancer, and as an artist in her constant endeavor made the reporter concentrate more on her thorough self-management and mindset. Two-time relay interview was more like advice on human life in general heard from a wise person and her vivid stories in the raw enabled me to understand her much better. The title of ‘grand prize at the 33rd Seoul Dance Festival’ couldn’t simply define her as a whole in the future, either.

An opportunity to solidify her identity

The first impression of president Park was being very gentle and discreet and her each phrase was silent but powerful. I greeted her with a story about the winning of the grand prix at the 33rd Seoul Dance Festival in 2012, the biggest issue of all articles on the press. “I remember that the Seoul Dance Festival held that year had such a high threshold because there participated so many excellent dance troupes. I did make many efforts and had a just expectation, too, but I couldn’t be sure that I would win the grand prix.”

President Park, who had been one of the few dancers representing Korea coming and going between boundaries of diverse dances, recollected that she once had indecision about her identity. As a dancer who needed constant communication with the public, she tried hest best to cater to them for quick communication, but there must have been inner anguish she suffered. After all, her winning the grand prix at Seoul Dance Festival made her another opportunity to reflect on her identity as a Korean dancer. Her own esthetic choreography of unique colors also gave a fresh fuel to the dance world of Korea. “It seems that an artist must find herself and build up through her work like this. Because all my acts in themselves are not a separate artistic activity but my life itself.”

Performance to decorate the year meaningfully

As a dancer, president Park ultimately pays attention to the activity of returning arts to the society. In an effort for such activity, Park Si-jong Dance Troupe is making preparations for the performance of ‘Landscape on a winter day – smiles’ (Cheongju Arts Center, Little theater, 6:00 p.m.), which is the 6th performance for sharing love through culture and arts, scheduled for this coming December 28.

“Looking back around, there are numerous performances from January through the middle of December, including contests, but the year-end performance in December can be referred to as my face. So it is the most meaningful performance of the numerous ones. We are making so many preparations and I am expecting a good-quality one, but I want to act as a bridge for sharing for those who don’t know how to make donations in a sitting together with local opinion leaders through this performance.” Park Si-jong Dance Troupe is making a donation of proceeds from the year-end performance each year to social welfare groups. Next year, for overall expansion of a contributive performance, they are planning to make a performance tour of other regions. Caring about people in need for help through her own work has been the best social service for president Park and a duty as a dancer.

The role being asked of her now

President Park was in a low tone throughout the interview but delivered some strong impression about what she thinks of as important. She said she feels a sense of responsibility for her social role as a dancer. Question was asked for her frank frame of mind about whether that role is at times burdensome for her who must make efforts to expand the base from the center, or whether she feels some fear or not. “Well, I seem to have passed such an age for fear. In the past, yes. But if I say I feel afraid of such activity at my age, it must mean I am not confident about the longtime engagement as a dancer or that I am not square. If I have been active as an artist, choreographer and dancer for a long time, I think I should be able to act as a firm hedge in a corner of the society now.”

Toward the end of the interview, President Park added, “I think the power of art is very great. Art can really change and circulate many things. In the modern age rampant with egoism and in a rough world we are living, can’t the place touched by arts at least deliver the meaning of ‘together’ and experience of healing?” The reporter sympathized with her as a person who experienced having a turbulence in my heart or trivial worries in disturbing thoughts disappear at one melody, one written phrase or one piece of movement. Wasn’t it a deep sympathy and comfort incomparable to any achievement or cause? This is why I think her role in the Korean dance world will become increasingly important. .
