Introducing the world's first bicycle brake 'BikeABS', obtaining patent home & abroad, creating a sensation in the market


More and more people are using bicycle for commuting or physical health thanks to the increased number of bicycle lanes. It is estimated that around 10 million people are using it. But the number of accidents are also being reported. According to a statistics released on 23 October from Korea Transportation Safety Authority, 62,136 accidents were reported with 1,480 fatalities between 2009 and 2013. The professor of Construction Environmental Engineering at Seoul National University Dongik Ha explained that bicycle has three time more chance for accident compared to other means of transport, and 90% were caused by crash. The good news is that a Korean company developed 'BikeABS' and is creating a sensation in the market. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met the CEO of HS Dongik Ji and heard about the details.


Preventing the wheel-lock of the front wheel that causes overturn when braking suddenly

Located in Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province, HS started its business in the name of Haesung Mulsan established in 1993 in Incheon city. A private research center was built at that time to develop ABS for two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles and they have been applying for patents even since. The company was reestablished as HS in 1996 and released 'HS ABS' for cars and motorcycles and obtained patents in US, Japan, Europe and Taiwan. They obtained patent in Korea in 2011, acquired ISO-9001 Certificate, released 'HS MBS' and was selected as an excellent venture enterprise from Small and medium Business Corporation. They participated in EICMA Motorcycle Fair in Italy in 2013 and they proved their technical skills. They established a company-affiliated R&D center this year and surprised the world by introducing 'BikeABS' for bicycles. Ji has only been working on developing brake system for 20 years. He tried to find ways to prevent the bicycle accidents when he saw the ever increasing number, and eventually applied the motorcycle or car braking technology 'ABS' to bicycle. Ji said "we are developing and producing bicycle brake device(fine hydraulic  control) which prevents the wheel-lock of the front wheel. This ¡®BikeABS' prevents the rider from being overturned when braking suddenly."

'BikeABS' maintains the brake operation in optimum state(optimum hydraulic state) and reduces the braking distance by enabling a sudden deacceleration. It also enables handle operation in the middle of braking to avoid the obstacles so that the rider can be protected from the second damage. The existing products send 100% of hydraulic pressure, produced by master cylinder on operation of brake lever when braking suddenly, to calliper and this caused the wheel-lock. But 'BikeABS' sends only 35%(95% based on lock point) so that it can reduce the speed faster. This technology is very important because most bicycle accidents are caused when braking suddenly to a full stop in an unexpected situation. But 'BikeABS' is loaded with anti-lock brake system which enables the wheel slowly stops to prevent the rider being thrown away. Ji said "BikeABS can gain ABS effect by connecting master cylinder(of brake lever) to wheel cylinder to prevent accidents. It is 5cm in length, 3cm in width, and weighs 103 grams(small and light) and the appearance when attached to a normal bicycle is agreeable."

Since its releasing in November 2014, HS has been swamped with inquiries from home and abroad and the sales is surpassing their expectations. 'BikeABS' currently is being introduced through magazines and TV, and has received the Technology Innovation Awards from a sports daily. Ji said "we are currently running our home page (www.bikeabs.co.kr) and are listening to our customers' feedback through SNS and also doing training and sales support by visiting our member stores(for sale and installation of the device)."


Entering to the world stage by expanding domestic market base

HS carried out a 'sudden braking test in an unexpected situation'. The result is that the bicycle loaded with 'BikeABS' reduced the average braking distance by 19%. It maintained the same braking distance during more than 10 times of the experiment but normal bicycles varied the distance and experienced slips and overturns. The professor Ha said that with its stable brake system, 'BikeABS' can shorten the braking distance and reduce accident rate. Ji said "those who are using bicycle is estimated to be more than 10 million now in Korea. The MTB bicycle or road bicycle loaded with hydraulic brake are also increasing. We expect 'BikeABS' will help to establish a safer cycling."

HS is planning to introduce lighter products and to cooperate with a production company for the current product to be installed in the master cylinder. Ji said "we're going to pioneer overseas market while expanding the domestic market. We are exporting out product samples to the world at the moment. We will also participate in various exhibitions and fairs home and abroad to commercialize 'BikeABS'."

HS is producing all of their products in Korea with their own technology. 'BikeABS' will surely reduce accident rate and spread the Korean technology to the world.
