세계 최초 자전거 브레이크 ‘BikeABS' 개발, 국내외 특허, 뜨거운 시장 반응

전국적으로 아름다운 자전거길이 많이 생겨나고, 건강과 환경에 대한 관심이 늘어나면서 취미나 운동 혹은 출퇴근용으로 자전거를 타는 자전거족이 크게 늘어나고 있다. 이른바 자전거 인구 1,000만 시대가 열린 것이다. 하지만, 자전거족이 증가만큼 자전거사고율도 높아지고 있는데, 지난 10월 23일 교통안전공단이 공개한 자료에 따르면, 2009~2013년 사이 전국에서 자전거 관련 사고는 6만 2,136건이 발생해 1,480명이 숨진 것으로 나타났다. 서울대 건설환경공학부 하동익 교수는 ‘자전거는 다른 교통수단과 비교해 볼 때 약 3배 정도의 높은 사고 발생 위험을 가지고 있다’며 ‘자전거사고의 90%가 자동차나 기타 물체와의 출동에 의해서 발생 된다’고 설명하였다. 이러한 상황에서 국내 한 기업이 ‘BikeABS'를 개발해 전 세계적으로 이목을 집중시키고 있다. 지동익 대표를 만나 자세한 이야기를 나눠봤다.

급제동시 전복의 원인이 되는 앞바퀴 잠김 현상 방지

현재 경기도 가평군에 위치하고 있는 (주)HS의 시작은 1993년 인천에서 설립된 ㈜해성물산으로 거슬러 올라간다. 이때 사설연구소를 설립하여 이륜 및 사륜차용 ABS를 개발하며 국내외 특허를 출원해 왔다. 1996년에는 ㈜HS 법인 설립 후 자동차 및 모터사이클용으로 ‘HS ABS’를 출시하여 미국, 일본, 유럽, 대만 등에 특허를 획득하였다. 2011년 ㈜HS 이름으로 국내특허를 획득하였고, ISO-9001 인증과 함께 'HS MBS'를 출시하였고, 중소기업진흥공단으로부터 벤처평가우수기업으로 선정되었다. 또한, 2013년에 이탈리아 밀라노 EICMA 오토바이전시회에 참가하여 높은 기술력을 인정받았다. 특히 올해는 ㈜HS 기업부설연구소를 설립하고 본격적으로 자전거용 ‘BikeABS’를 출시하여 전 세계를 깜짝 놀라게 하고 있다. 20년간 오로지 브레이크시스템연구 및 기술개발에 헌신해 온 지동익 대표는 늘어만 가는 자전거 사고를 사전에 예방할 수 있는 장치에 대해 고민해오다가, 기존의 자동차나 오토바이의 브레이킹 기술인 ABS장치를 자전거 시스템에 적용하기 시작했다. “저희는 자전거의 앞바퀴잠김현상(휠락)을 방지하는 브레이크(미세유압제어)장치를 개발 및 생산하고 있습니다. ‘BikeABS’는 자전거 급제동시 사람이 앞으로 전복되는 현상을 막아줘 심각한 사고로 이어지는 것을 사전에 예방해주는 장치입니다.”   

‘BikeABS’는 급제동시 앞바퀴가 잠기는 현상이 발생하지 않도록 브레이크 작동을 최적상태(최적유압유지)로 유지하면서 급감속을 가능케 하여 제동거리를 줄여주는 원리로 작동된다. 

또한, 브레이킹 도중에 핸들조작이 가능하므로 장애물을 피할수 있어 2차 피해도 줄일 수 있다. 기존의 제품들은 급제동시 브레이크 레버의 작동으로 마스터 실린더에 발생한 유압이 100% 캘리퍼로 전달되어 잠김현상이 발생하였다. 하지만, BikeABS는 최적의 유압(약 35%, 락포인트 기준 약 95%)까지만 전달되도록 유압을 조절해주기 때문에, 바퀴는 굴러가면서도 속도를 급격하게 감속시켜 안정적으로 제동되는 것이 특징이다. 증가일로인 자전거 사고의 주요 원인은 주행 중 돌발 상황에서 반사적으로 전륜 풀브레이킹을 하는 행동에서 기인하고, 이것은 자전거 전복 및 2차 사고의 주요 원인이기도 하다. 하지만, ‘BikeABS’는 안티 락 브레이크 시스템으로 바퀴가 잠기지 않은 상태에서 굴러가면서 설 수 있게 설계되어, 자전거가 전복되지 않음은 물론 충분히 사물을 피할 수 있도록 도와준다. ‘BikeABS’는“유압식 브레이크레버의 마스터실린더와 휠실린더 사이에 간단하게 장치를 연결하는 것만으로도 충분히 ABS 효과를 얻을 수 있고 안전사고에 대비할 수 있다. 또한 길이 5cm, 폭 3cm, 무게 103g의 작고 가벼워서 기존의 자전거에 장착해도 미관상 큰 이질감이 없는 것도 특징이다.”  

2014년 11월 ‘BikeABS’를 출시한 이래 두 달이 채지나지 않은 현재 한국내에서 뿐만 아니라 해외에서도 문의가 쇄도하고 있고 판매도 예상을 훨씬 뛰어 넘고 있다. ‘BikeABS’는 현재 전문잡지, 공중파TV 등에서 앞다퉈 소개되고 있으며, 스포츠전문 일간지로부터 기술혁신 대상을 수상한 바 있다. “저희들은 자전거 애호가들의 안전하고 즐거운 자전거 생활을 위해서, 본사 홈페이지(www.bikeabs.co.kr) 등과 SNS를 잘 활용하면서 고객의 소리에 귀 기울이고 있으며, 판매/장착 협력점을 위해 방문 교육/연수 및 판매지원에 최선의 노력을 경주하고 있습니다.”

국내 시장 기반확충을 발판삼아 세계무대로 나아갈 것

(주)HS가 자체적으로 실시한 ‘돌발 상황을 예상한 급제동 실험’에서 ‘BikeABS’를 장착한 자전거는 장착하지 않은 자전거보다 평균제동거리가 최대 19%까지 줄여 드는 것이 확인되었다. 10회 이상의 실험에서 ‘BikeABS’를 장착한 자전거는 거의 동일한 제동거리를 유지한데 비해 비 장착 자전거는 제동거리의 차이가 컸고 자전거가 전복되거나 미끄러지는 현상을 보였다. 이에 서울대 건설환경공학부 하동익 교수는 ‘BikeABS는 제동거리 단축과 안정적인 제동으로 사고율을 크게 낮출 수 있다’며 ‘부상과 사망 또한 크게 줄일 수 있을 것으로 사료 된다’고 덧붙였다. “국내에서도 건강뿐만 아니라 환경 및 동호회 활동 등의 사회적 요인으로 자전거 인구는 1,000만을 넘어섰습니다. 현재 MTB뿐만 아니라 로드바이크 에서도  유압식브레이크를 장착한 제품들이 증가하고 있습니다. ‘BikeABS’는 자전거 애호가들이  안전하게 자전거 타기를 즐기는 문화로 정착되는데 큰 도움이 되기를 기대하고 있습니다.” 

(주)HS는 현재 제품 보다 좀 더 가벼운 신제품을 곧 소개할 예정이고, 향후 현재의 제품을 마스터실린더에 내장시키려는 계획을 가지고 자전거 제조사와 제휴를 모색하고 있다. “국내시장의 기반을 확충해 나가며 해외 시장을 개척해 나갈 방침입니다. 시장변화에 유동적으로 대응해 나가기 위해서 현재에도 글로벌시장을 목표로 활발히 샘플을 수출하고 있습니다. 또한, ‘BikeABS’를 알리기 위해서 지속적으로 국내외 전시회에 참가하는 등 홍보에도 만전을 기울이고자 합니다.”

Introducing the world's first bicycle brake 'BikeABS', obtaining patent home & abroad, creating a sensation in the market

More and more people are using bicycle for commuting or physical health thanks to the increased number of bicycle lanes. It is estimated that around 10 million people are using it. But the number of accidents are also being reported. According to a statistics released on 23 October from Korea Transportation Safety Authority, 62,136 accidents were reported with 1,480 fatalities between 2009 and 2013. The professor of Construction Environmental Engineering at Seoul National University Dongik Ha explained that bicycle has three time more chance for accident compared to other means of transport, and 90% were caused by crash. The good news is that a Korean company developed 'BikeABS' and is creating a sensation in the market. Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met the CEO of HS Dongik Ji and heard about the details.

Preventing the wheel-lock of the front wheel that causes overturn when braking suddenly

Located in Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province, HS started its business in the name of Haesung Mulsan established in 1993 in Incheon city. A private research center was built at that time to develop ABS for two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles and they have been applying for patents even since. The company was reestablished as HS in 1996 and released 'HS ABS' for cars and motorcycles and obtained patents in US, Japan, Europe and Taiwan. They obtained patent in Korea in 2011, acquired ISO-9001 Certificate, released 'HS MBS' and was selected as an excellent venture enterprise from Small and medium Business Corporation. They participated in EICMA Motorcycle Fair in Italy in 2013 and they proved their technical skills. They established a company-affiliated R&D center this year and surprised the world by introducing 'BikeABS' for bicycles. Ji has only been working on developing brake system for 20 years. He tried to find ways to prevent the bicycle accidents when he saw the ever increasing number, and eventually applied the motorcycle or car braking technology 'ABS' to bicycle. Ji said "we are developing and producing bicycle brake device(fine hydraulic  control) which prevents the wheel-lock of the front wheel. This ‘BikeABS' prevents the rider from being overturned when braking suddenly."

'BikeABS' maintains the brake operation in optimum state(optimum hydraulic state) and reduces the braking distance by enabling a sudden deacceleration. It also enables handle operation in the middle of braking to avoid the obstacles so that the rider can be protected from the second damage. The existing products send 100% of hydraulic pressure, produced by master cylinder on operation of brake lever when braking suddenly, to calliper and this caused the wheel-lock. But 'BikeABS' sends only 35%(95% based on lock point) so that it can reduce the speed faster. This technology is very important because most bicycle accidents are caused when braking suddenly to a full stop in an unexpected situation. But 'BikeABS' is loaded with anti-lock brake system which enables the wheel slowly stops to prevent the rider being thrown away. Ji said "BikeABS can gain ABS effect by connecting master cylinder(of brake lever) to wheel cylinder to prevent accidents. It is 5cm in length, 3cm in width, and weighs 103 grams(small and light) and the appearance when attached to a normal bicycle is agreeable."

Since its releasing in November 2014, HS has been swamped with inquiries from home and abroad and the sales is surpassing their expectations. 'BikeABS' currently is being introduced through magazines and TV, and has received the Technology Innovation Awards from a sports daily. Ji said "we are currently running our home page (www.bikeabs.co.kr) and are listening to our customers' feedback through SNS and also doing training and sales support by visiting our member stores(for sale and installation of the device)."

Entering to the world stage by expanding domestic market base

HS carried out a 'sudden braking test in an unexpected situation'. The result is that the bicycle loaded with 'BikeABS' reduced the average braking distance by 19%. It maintained the same braking distance during more than 10 times of the experiment but normal bicycles varied the distance and experienced slips and overturns. The professor Ha said that with its stable brake system, 'BikeABS' can shorten the braking distance and reduce accident rate. Ji said "those who are using bicycle is estimated to be more than 10 million now in Korea. The MTB bicycle or road bicycle loaded with hydraulic brake are also increasing. We expect 'BikeABS' will help to establish a safer cycling."

HS is planning to introduce lighter products and to cooperate with a production company for the current product to be installed in the master cylinder. Ji said "we're going to pioneer overseas market while expanding the domestic market. We are exporting out product samples to the world at the moment. We will also participate in various exhibitions and fairs home and abroad to commercialize 'BikeABS'."

HS is producing all of their products in Korea with their own technology. 'BikeABS' will surely reduce accident rate and spread the Korean technology to the world.
