¡°Reading from childhood gives you personality and the power of thought"

Raising national talent through debate on reading and self directed learning

- Youngsim Kim, the Seodaemoon branch manager of Hanuri Book and the general secretary of Social Contribution Dasarang World(all love world)

Reading absorbs ancient sage's wisdom and widens thinking power. The reason it is different from rote learning is because it is a mental labor to understand each character's background and environment to make one's own personality, thoughts and values. It is for readers to choose what books to read and how to understand.

Therefore, organizations, which can suggest an appropriate educational method and can raise capable people who can choose knowledge initiatively, are needed.

The limitation of knowledge in the age of internet can be overcome through reading, debate and essay

Hugging hands full of books. Hanuri Book's Library Selection Committee reads hands full of books to select even one book according to the age level in the hope of people finding a truth and of increasing their value and pride. Hanuri Book started as Hanuri Reading Culture Movement Headquarters in July 1989 and has been proving the academic value of education and reading ever since. The Hanuri Book's Reading Debate Essay has a goal of 'promoting 10,000 global talent' and their moto is 'I love books, I love people, I love the country' and they teaches the methods and the need of reading.

The Seodaemoon branch manager of Hanuri Book Youngsim Kim said "our programmes are designed for from the year 5, who can start to read, to high school students but adults can also participate. We do not make our own material but we use good books from Eastern and Western culture." Among the books, humanities take high percentage because it can provide both knowledge and values. They pursue a sensitivity education through the discussion on values and one's preference in the process of debate. Kim said "Reading, debate and essay are a corporate body of thinking that should but go together. To be good at essay one must have various experience to build background knowledge but reading can also enable one to have it. Also essays systematize one's knowledge through debate and writing." The important thing in this process is to arouse interest. This helps children expand their capacity to think and their personality as well as relationship with others. Kim has been watching all of this for 11 years. She majored in social welfare and learned knowledge and human relations and also realized her role as a parent and teacher. That is why Kim teaches how to choose good books alongside emphasizing the contents of good books.

It is not necessary to define the right periods for reading education but it might be between the early childhood and high school because this periods can change one's personality. Usually the must-read list is on the text book and Hanuri Book's Library Selection Committee reads selected fiction and nonfiction books first and makes a must-read list.

The reading-missionary's road to cultivate personality, knowledge and history

Distinguished among Kim's educational philosophy is 'history education'. Kim said "student's love for the country became remarkably different after they learned the history. They said they understood what is patriotism, what they could do for the country, and how big it is. They said that it is regretful that they did not much learned about the history when they were in the elementary school. If they learn the history from Hanuri Book they can understand and establish a firm view of history. The earlier they learn it the easier." Kim said that to give children a correct view of history is to raise talented people for our future. Reading is the resources of a nation. Kim teaches the north korean refugee adolescents and Chinese emigrants. Although they can speak Korean they are not very good at reading and writing and that is why Kim is taught them systematically. Kim said "their personality and a view of state have changed. Chinese emigrants said they would get Korean citizenship and do military service and finish university in Korea. This change cannot be achieved without reading. Reading make them change the way they think about personality and a view of state."

In this context, Kim is holding a seminar with the subject 'The Necessity of Reading Education' from 10am-12pm on 25 November at the grand hall of Seodaemoon District Office. She will give a lecture on what impact reading might give us, why reading is needed, and how our lives can be changed after reading. Kim said "there is a reading terminology called 'space between the lines'. If one can understand and analyse various lines that the words imply one can get a good result. Then what kind of book should we read? We should sublate books made for commercial purpose but aim at good books from all ages and countries. That is the true meaning of reading and is the cornerstone for 'I love books, I love people, I love the country'. The seminar will invite special reading lecturers and is expected to be participated by around 100 ~ 200 people. Everybody can participate and it is advisable to book in advance. Kim is playing the role as light and salt. Kim is also a secretary general of a nonprofit organization Dasarang World(all love world: chief director Youngha Lee) and is becoming a paragon by demonstrating counseling education and social welfare together. Rainbow is the future of Korea. Kim would like to plant a true view of Korean history in the children of multi-cultural families. Kim said that she would be an old woman who would tell a sweet history and about reading methods free for the village people when she gets retired. Kim is making the world a more beautiful place by returning her know-how to the society alongside her wide social service activities.
