Artist Heejae Huh.

Everybody looked at the flower but nobody saw the flower.

A veteran artist Heejae Huh's '2014 KIAF Exhibition' was successfully held at COEX Hall, Seoul for 5 days from 25 September. The motif of the works were about a flower which is a rather common subject in western painting but Huh tenaciously absorbed herself into it and successfully animated the mystique of the birth of life on the canvas. An art critic Chungwhan Go once has said "taking a close-up of a flower means to see the inner side of the flower and we can see the body, flesh, pistil, stamen, and genitals of the flower. A flower is a plant. Huh expressed vitality and desire through a flower." The Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met Huh, who has been passionately leading her career by continuously studying new subjects, and heard about the 35 years of her artistic life.

Maximizing the inner beauty through defamiliarization.

Huh majored in paintings at Sejong University's General Graduate School, and has held 9 solo exhibitions and more than 130 invitation or group exhibitions at home and abroad. Huh boasts her more than 40 colorful award winning careers from various art competitions including Korea Art Show, Mokuhae Art Show, Environmental Art Show, Kumgang Art Show, Figurative Art Show, Danwon Art Show, and Daejeon Art Show. She also put her honorable name on the Korea Artist Prize 2013. She is a member of Korea Fine Arts Association, Korea Environmental Art Organization, Daejeon Figurative Artist's Association, Daejeon International Art Exchange Association, Green Aura, Angeon Memorial Foundation, and Asia Artists Association. This year, she was appointed as a judge for '2014 Sky Village Wall Painting Show'. She is also serializing a column on Gumgang Daily to provide common sense in art for normal people.

Huh said "people tend not to see the inner side when seeing a flower. If they try, they can feel its profundity and sanctity, and can understand a flower as a genital. That is why it is artists' job to show the inner things which most people can not see." Huh used to focus on figurative works such as abstract painting but has been painting flowers for 8 years since then. But her experiment to express a flower, with her esthetic sense, on canvas has not yet finished. We feel a psychological stability and a satisfaction on our esthetic exploration when appreciating still-lifes, but Huh's flowers give the appreciators an embarrassment and a discomfort. Huh overwhelmingly attracts the appreciators' attention by deliberately using 'defamiliarization'. The first technique of defamiliarization is a close-up. Huh catches the delicate forms of a flower by a close-up and lead us in that delicateness to a level more than the beauty of a flower itself. The second technique is on the variation of colors. The normal color of a flower becomes disparate in order to refresh the appreciators's eyes. Huh said "a lotus flower is not blue but it can be so by the hand of an artist. The black background means a rebirth from a womb and eventually, every subject matters gain a new life by my hand and sensibility."

Realizing the mystery of the beginning by expressing a genital as a form.

If we see the works of Huh, we can find dual-aspect. Each petal is so thin and transparent as if it will get torn at any moment, but the whole flower that fills the canvas is so intense and heavy. The presence of the flower on the canvas is masculine but its form is sensual and buxom like the naked body of a woman.  And the candidly exposed genital is both plant's and animal's in its entirety, and its symbol is immensely humane and extremely universal. Huh said "I chose a flower to express femininity. But the flower is not only a plant in my work but also an existence which crosses over the intersection between a plant and an animal. And this reflects my intension to express an environment and a space through a flower."

Huh uses a flower as a metaphor for a woman's body and the body is being used as a tool for revealing the secrets of carrying a new life. The frequent use of blue fills the canvas to express the mystery of the beginning. It seems that Huh sometimes adds a flower's natural shape and sometimes omits it to deliver her theme more clearly. Huh said "painting is a desire to fill the shortage. Because the desire makes me endlessly introspect my inner-self and study about the other side of the world which nobody has seen. I hope my curiosity on all subject matters are endless and I will carry on working."

4 phrases are hanging on the wall in her studio; 'let's create a work that cannot be bought', 'let's create an immortal work', 'let's work as if I have nothing to lose', and 'let's paint what I want to paint'. These phrases made me that I could feel her burning passion for art and her truthfulness.

She does her unique things, is not afraid of failure, is constantly challenging for something new, enriches her artistic imagination, and shows the power of art regardless wealth and fame, and this makes her works even more curious.

Huh is expected to participate in Daejeon International Art Fair in December, and is preparing to have an invitation exhibition with 5 Mongolian artists.
