‘수학 교육의 새로운 교육방법 제시’
학생을 위한 정직한 학원 만들겠다

수학강사로 15년간 학원가를 열광시키던 김상건 원장이 일산서구에 특화된 수학교육을 전하기 위해 건수학을 오픈했다.
오픈당시 자신을 알고 있던 학부모들의 추천으로 많은 학생들이 앞 다퉈 등록을 했고, 깐깐한 학부모의 입소문으로 매달 추가 인원이 등록을 하고 있다.
건수학의 강점은 사교육비의 부담은 줄이고 교육시간은 늘렸다는 점에 있다. 보통 학원의 1주일 수업시간은 4시간에 그친다. 김상건 원장은 강의시간과 첨삭시간을 8시간으로 늘리고 학생들이 수학에 좀 더 가까워질 수 있도록 노력하고 있다.
또한, 학부모의 심정을 너무 잘 이해하기 때문에 부담스러운 사교육비를 줄이고 학생들이 편하게 공부할 수 있는 환경을 만들었다. 그 일환으로 모든 교재는 김 원장이 스스로 만들고 무료로 학생들에게 제공한다. 그가 학원을 운영하면서 처음 다짐한 것이 ‘학생을 위한 학원’을 만드는 것이었다.
등록 시에도 학부모와 학생을 동시 면담해 학생이 정말 공부하려는 의지가 있는지를 판단하고 현재 등록해 강의를 듣고 있는 학생들의 면학분위기를 최대한 지켜갈 수 있도록 하고 있다. 또한, 수업 진도를 제대로 따라오지 못하는 학생이나 수업에 대한 복습이 필요한 학생들을 위해 모든 수업은 동영상으로 촬영해 제공하고 있다.
더욱이 학생들의 성적표를 일일이 받아 수시진로 전문기관과의 협력을 통해 어느 대학, 어느 학과에 지원가능한지에 대한 구체적 데이터를 제공함으로써 대학입시에 성공할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있다.
김 원장이 만든 수학일기도 눈여겨볼 필요가 있다. “대단원 중단원 소단원은?”, “오늘 푼 문제의 유형들은 어떤 문제들이 있는가?”, “이해하지 못한 개념이나 풀지 못한 문제 또는 실수한 문제는 있는지?”, “반복해 익혀야 할 개념은?” 등등의 질문에 대한 답변형식으로 만든 수학일기를 통해 머릿속으로 오늘의 수업을 한 번 더 떠올리고 그 개념에 대한 확인하는 과정이다. 현재 수학일기의 효과는 학생들의 성적으로 입증됐으며, 이는 학생들을 위해 어떤 방법으로 어떻게 교육했을 때 좋은 결과가 나올지에 대한 끊임없는 김 원장의 고민 속에서 탄생된 교육방법이다.
그는 수학을 잘하는 방법에 대해 작은 것부터 생각하고 실천하라고 전한다. 문제에 대한 이해도가 높을 때 수학성적이 향상될 수 있다며 수학 문제를 접근하는 방법을 고민하고 쉬운 문제에 대한 접근법부터 시작해 난이도가 높은 문제로 접근해가는 훈련을 꾸준히 한다면 수학은 어렵지 않은 학문이 될 것이라고 한다.
앞으로 그는 기존 학원들과는 달리 수익성보다는 학생을 위한 학원을 만들어가겠다고 전했다. 지식의 축적도 중요하지만 오로지 지식만 던지는 학원보다는 인성, 특기 계발 등등 학생들이 발전할 수 있는 방향을 지향하는 학원으로 만들겠다는 것이다.
또한, 학창시절 학원의 선택이 학생의 대학입시와 밀접하게 연관이 된 만큼 학부모들이 학원을 선택할 때 좀 더 신중해지기를 부탁했다.

Making a truthful academy for students.
Geon Math, the principal Sang-geon Kim, praised for a trusted educational institution.
Kim has been famous for an academy lecturer in math for 15 years and recently opened Geon Math in Ilsan to deliver a specialized math education. As soon as it opened, the parents who knew about Kim's ability recommended students and a lot of them registered and the numbers are still increasing. The strong point of Geon Math is that it reduced the burden of private education fees while the education times increased. Usually, normal academies's lesson times per week are 4 hours but Kim doubled the time to 8 hours including lecture times and correction times. Because Kim understands very well about school parents' feeling, he reduced the private education fees and created a comfortable studying environment for the students. As a part of this effort, Kim made all the study materials by himself to provide free to the students. When he opened Geon Math, he decided to make an 'academy for students'.
When registering, Kim invites both the parents and their student(s) to check whether he/she really want to study, and advise them to keep the current studying atmosphere. Kim provides all his lectures in the video form so that those who are slow to catch up or who need reviews can watch them again. Not only this but Kim also checks each student's report card and offers systematic data, in cooperation with the optional course specialized consulting organizations, so that which department and university he/she might successfully get into.
We also need to pay attention to Kim's 'Math Diary'. "What are the large, medium, and small units?", "What types of questions did you solve today?", "Are there questions which you didn't understand, give an answer, or made mistakes?", and "What are the concepts you have to learn repeatedly?". This helps students be reminded of what they have learned today so that they can check its concepts again. This is the result of Kim's careful consideration on how to get a good result and its effect was proved by the students' academic performance. He said "if you want to be good at math, try to think small one first and act afterwards. Solve easier questions first and them move on to more difficult ones. If you have a deep understanding of a question you can improve your math performance." Kim wants to make his academy for his students rather than for his profits. Knowledge is important but even more so is to develop students' personality and specialty is Kim's belief. Kim also asked school parents to be careful when they choose an academy for their sons and daughters.
