젊은 패기와 톡톡 튀는 아이디어로 식품 기계 분야 재패할 것

쌍용스텐 채종현 대표

쌍용스텐의 채종현 대표는 올해 나이 28살로 업계에서는 찾아보기 드문 젊은 CEO 중에 한명이다. 그의 모친은 1990년에 남편이 설립한 쌍용금속(주)에 2009년 대표이사가 되었다. 작은 규모의 원자재 유통회사였던 쌍용금속(주)은 모친이 대표이사가 되고, 채종현 대표가 이사를 맡게 된 후부터 해마다 연매출을 상승 기록을 갱신하고 있다. 2010년에는 의정부지사와 구리지사를 통폐합하면서 남양주에 신사옥을 건립해 스테인리스 전품목의 유통 인프라를 갖췄고, 그 해 경영혁신형 중소기업(MAIN-BIZ)으로 선정되는 영광을 누렸다. 그러던 중 쌍용금속(주) 제조부서를 분리 독립시켜 9월에 쌍용스텐을 설립하게 되었다. 채종현 대표는 쌍용스텐의 대표로 쌍용금속(주), 쌍용건영(주)에서는 이사직을 맡게 된다.

모친과 함께 더 큰 기업으로 도약시킬 것

현재 쌍용스텐 대표직과 쌍용금속(주), 쌍용건영(주) 이사직을 겸임하면서 경희대학교 경영대학원에 재학, 사업과 학업을 병행하는 채종현 대표는 불과 5년전만에도 평범한 대학생이었다. 갑작스러운 가정 사정으로 인해 5년전에 쌍용금속(주)에 입사하게 되었다. 특유의 온화한 여성리더십과 카리스마를 발휘하는 여성CEO인 모친 밑에서 그에게 맡겨진 첫 번째 임무는 물건의 상하차를 돕는 거였다. 직위도 없는 일이었지만 그는 그 과정 속에서 원자재에 대한 지식을 쌓을 수 있었다. 마침 세금계산서가 종이에서 전자로 바뀐다고 고지된 시점이어서 ERP시스템으로 전환하면서는 재고관리 및 회계 전반에 대해 배울 수도 있었다. 회사에서 가장 직급이 낮은 사람이었지만 현장에서 발로 뛰며 회사의 모든 시스템을 몸으로 익혀가던 그 시절을 채종현 대표는 아직도 가장 행복하던 추억으로 떠올리곤 한다. 1년 후 쌍용스텐으로 독립 후 대표직을 맡으면서 총 3억 5천만원을 투자해 일본 아마다사의 절곡기와 절단기를 구매하게 되었다. 그때부터 전문적으로 절단, 절곡, 용접을 하기 시작했는데, 메인 거래처 1곳과 소규모의 가공을 의뢰받아 일을 진행해 첫 해 1억 정도의 매출을 올리게 되었습니다.“

그렇게 나날이 승승장구해오던 쌍용스텐은 2011년 12월 일방적으로 메인 거래처에서 더 이상 외주를 주지 않겠다고 통보해오면서 위기에 봉착하고 만다. 하지만 다행히 쌍용스텐의 질 좋은 서비스에 만족했던 소규모 거래처들의 입소문으로 거래처들이 하나 둘 생겨나기 시작했고, 인터넷 쇼핑몰(www.스텐레스.com) 개설 이후에는 가히 폭발적으로 거래처들이 늘어났다. 특히 도로시설물과 아파트 시설물, 군부대 시설물의 반응이 뜨거웠다. 이때 매출액은 10배이상 상승했다. 쌍용스텐은 높은 기술력을 바탕으로 품질 경영시스템(iso 9001)인증과 환경경영시스템(iso 14001)인증을 획득했다.

2015년 본격적으로 자체 식품기계 브랜드 런칭

쌍용스텐의 지속적인 발전을 골몰하던 채종현 대표는 야심차게 스위스 바이스트로닉사에서 레이져 컷팅기를 구입하고 레이져 컷팅 전문 공장을 개설하였다. 이로써 스테인리스 스틸에 대한 임가공 설비를 모두 갖추게 되었다. 그 무렵 기계 판금 부분만 수리해달라는 일반 고객사의 요칭이 있었는데, 채종현 대표는 기술 인력만 확보된다면 쌍용스텐에서도 자사 기계제품을 생산할 수 있겠다는 확신을 하게 된다. “하늘이 도와 이근원 기술이사님과 인연이 닿게 되었죠. 당시 이사님은 퇴임 후 편안한 노후를 계획하고 계셨는데, 수차례 설득하여 쌍용스텐의 기술이사직으로 모셔오게 되었습니다.” 천군만마를 얻게 된 채종현 대표는 곧바로 대규모의 자본을 투자해 1200평 규모의 공장 부지를 매입하고 공장을 신축하여 모든 시설과 기술 인력을 통합한 후 본격적으로 생산체제에 돌입했다.

현재 쌍용스텐이 취급하고 있는 주요 물품은 무쌈슬라이스기, 파인애플 컷팅기, 무채기, 식재료 살균기 등 반자동 및 자동화 기계와 세척기기와 세정대, 조리대와 작업대, 보관고와 소독기 등으로, 2015년도에는 정식으로 자동화기계 브랜드를 출범한다는 계획이다. “현재 사용되는 식품기계들은 모든 일본, 독일, 스위스 등의 유명 브랜드 제품들로 상당히 고가입니다. 그마저도 아직은 반자동 제품이여서 불편함이 많은데, 저희는 모든 제품을 자동화하고 크기는 콤팩트하게 제작하여 식품기계 국산화에 앞장서고자 합니다.” 

쌍용스텐은 자체 연구소를 등록 중에 있는데 연구소가 등록되면 산학협력을 통해 인근 지역의 대학교와 공동으로 연구를 이어간다는 방침이다. 또한 지난 9월 법인으로 전환되어 채종현 대표가 이사직을 맡고 있는 (주)쌍용건영은 향후 ONE-STOP SERVICE가 가능한 건설회사로 대한민국의 건설 역사를 새로이 써 나간다는 계획이다. 그동안 지역경제 발전에 이바지 한 공로를 인정받아 채종현 대표는 지난 3월 남양주시장으로부터 표창장을 수여받았다. 더불어 다가오는 11월에는 경기 중소기업청장으로부터 표창을 수여 받을 예정이다.

Conquering the food machine industry by young ambitions and clever ideas.

Ssangyong Stan CEO Jonghyun Chae is 28 this year and it is rare that he is so much young in the field. His father established Ssangyong Metal in 1990 and his mother became the representative director of the company in 2009. This rather small company distributed raw materials since his mother took the top position and Chae as the director, and the yearly sales of the company has significantly increased ever since. They combined the two branches in Uijeongbu and Guri and built a new building in Namyangju and facilitated the distribution infrastructure for all their products and honored to be chosen as the MAIN-BIZ of the year. Then they separated manufacturing department and established Ssangyong Stan in September. Chae became the CEO of Ssangyong Stan and remained as the director of Ssangyong Metal and Ssangyong Kunyong. Since 2012 they have been giving their utmost strength for ONE-STOP SERVICE under their catch phrase 'opening antirust world(Ssangyong Metal)', 'making antirust future(Ssangyong Stan)', and 'building antirust value(Ssangyong Kunyong). 

Leaping into a bigger company with his mother.

Chae is also studying at the Graduate School of Kyung Hee University while managing the companies at the same time but 5 years ago he was just a university student. Due to a sudden family matter he started to work for Ssangyong Metal. His first duty under his mother's charismatic direction was to help loading and unloading the cargos. Though he did not have any position he could accumulate the knowledge about raw materials. On the occasion of tax invoice being turned into digital(EPR system) from papers, he could also learn about accounting and inventory management. He was the lowest of the company at that time but Chae remembers those times as the happiest times which he was learning the company's running systems day by day in the field. After one year, he became the CEO of Ssangyong Stan and invested $350,000 to buy a bending machine and a cutter from a Japanese company Amada. With his one main client and other relatively small clients, he started cutting, bending, and welding and achieved around $100,000 sales in the first year. However, the main client suddenly gave a notice in December 2012 that they no longer would deal with Ssangyong Metal and the company was put at risk as a result. Yet his small clients were happy with Ssangyong Metal's quality services and this was spread from mouth to mouth and since opening the internet shopping mall www.스텐레스.com their clients have been explosively increased. Especially, traffic lane facilities, apartment facilities, and military facilities were really hot. The sales around this time went up to 10 times. With their high technology, Ssangyong Stan obtained Management System(ISO 9001) and Environment Management System(ISO 14001) certifications.

Launching of their food machines from 2015.

Chae ambitiously bought a laser cutter from a Swiss company Bystronic and built a laser cutting specialized factory. Thus he facilitated all the necessary equipments for stainless steel. One day, a private client asked them to repair a plate part of a machine, and this prompted Chae to believe that he can produce their own machines if he can hire an expert. Chae said "I met Gunwon Lee by chance thanks to the god. Lee retired and was planing a comfortable life but I kept persuading him to join in the company as the technical director." Chae then bought a 3,600 square meter land and built a factory to start the production. Currently, Ssangyong Stan is producing radish slice machine, pineapple cutter, food sterilizer, cleanser & cleanser pad, kitchen work-top, workbench, and storage. They are planning to release automatic machines in 2015. Chae said "the food machines being used at the moment are from Japan, Germany, and Swiss and they are expensive. Even then they are semiautomatic which cause some inconvenience. But we are going to produce all of our products to be automatic and compact to lead the localization of food machines." Ssangyong Stan is applying for their own research center and when it is registered they will carry out researches with the universities around the area. Also, Ssangyong Kunyong became a corporation last September and they plan to do ONE-STOP SERVICE and to write a new construction history of Korea. Chae awarded the Namyangju city mayor's citation last March for his contribution to the development of regional economy. He is expected to be awarded yet another prize from the director of the Small and Medium Business Administration in November this year.
