[커버스토리] 청학숲유치원/김세훈 이사장
약 3만평 부지의 ‘숲체험’ 교육으로 아이들의 인성 발달
국내외 유치원 교육의 롤모델, 벤치마킹의 대상
인천 연수구에 위치한 45년 전통의 청학풀장은 인천 지역 부모들에게 일종의 명소처럼 자리 잡고 있다. 워터파크 수준의 시설은 아니지만 접근성이 좋고 바로 문학산 언저리에 위치하고 있어 생태공원의 역할까지 동시에 갖고 있는 곳이 바로 청학풀장이다. 그런데 사실 이 곳은 ‘숲 교육’으로 유명한 청학숲유치원의 일부이다. 청학숲유치원은 자연과 벗한 시설로 유명했을 뿐 아니라 KBS 드라마 ‘위대한 유산’의 촬영지로 등장해 많은 이들의 관심을 사기도 했다. 도심 속 교육에서 벗어나 자연과 함께 호흡하며 아이들 교육에 힘쓰고 있는 청학숲유치원의 김세훈 이사장을 만나보았다.
‘체험’과 ‘자연관찰’의 교육 이념
16개의 테마 숲교실, 생태공원, 동물원 등 다양한 체험 공간 있어
처음 유치원을 세울 당시부터 자연과 함께하는 방식을 도입하기로 한 김세훈 이사장의 결정에는 본인의 어린 시절 경험이 큰 부분을 차지하고 있었다.
‘조부님이 과수원을 갖고 있으셨어요. 다섯 살인가 여섯 살 때 과수원에 갔는데 토종닭이 병아리를 데리고 다니는 걸 보고 각인이 됐습니다. 아직도 그 과수원 생각을 하면 참 행복했던 경험을 갖고 있어요. 제 경험에 의해서 아이들에게 많이 체험을 시켜주자는 생각을 했습니다.’
이러한 고민의 결과, 청학숲유치원은 문학산 청학동산의 약 3만 평에 달하는 부지를 활용하여 16개의 테마 숲교실을 운영하고 있다. 통나무 교실, 솔밭 교실, 비탈 교실 등 그 종류 역시 다양하다. 뿐만 아니라 유치원 내 생태공원, 동물원, 자연학습장 등 다양한 종류의 체험교실이 있다.
김 이사장은 자연 안에서 동식물이 자라는 모습을 지켜보는 자연관찰 교육을 가장 중요시한다. 자연관찰을 통해 아이들의 풍부한 인간성을 기르고, 과학성이 싹트고, 생활에 적응하도록 하는 것이다. 여기에는 김 이사장의 땀과 노력이 배어있다. 매일같이 문학산을 오르내리며 공원과 동물원을 만들었고 이에 대한 활용방안을 끊임없이 고심했다.
체계적인 체험프로그램으로 좋은 반응
연령별로 진도에 맞춘 특기교육 가능해
김 이사장은 도심 속 시멘트 건물 속에서는 아이들에게 체험할 수 있는 기회를 만들어주는 데 한계가 있다고 생각했다. 동물을 아이들 스스로 길러보게 하고, 만져보게 하고, 모든 과정을 피부로 느끼게 하는 것이 일종의 정신적 훈련이 될 것이라는 확신이 있었던 것이다. 그래서 청학숲유치원에서는 사계절에 따라 그 때에 맞는 다양하고 체계적인 체험프로그램을 운영하며 아이들의 인성발달과 만족을 위해 노력하고 있다.
청학숲유치원은 캠프장과 생태공원 등에서 가족참여수업을 진행하며 어린이날이나 추수감사절 등에는 특별 기념행사를 가진다. 도호부청사, 인천상륙작전 기념관, 송도 가스과학관 등 인천 지역의 다양한 문화재나 체험관 등에서 현장학습 기회를 가질 수 있고, 문학산에 마련된 산책로에서 사계절의 정취를 고스란히 느낄 수 있는 곳이 바로 청학숲유치원이다.
또한 유아의 흥미로부터 발현된 주제를 중심으로 문제 해결 학습이 이루어지는 ‘레지오 에밀리아 프로젝트’ 교육과정 및 의사소통, 사회관계, 자연탐구 영역의 활동 중심 교육인 누리 교육과정, 연령별 영어?중국어 원어민 특기교육과 오르프 음악 수업, 체육 수업 등이 마련되어 있어 각자의 진도에 맞춘 체계적 교육이 가능한 점 또한 청학숲유치원이 가진 장점이다.
약 20여 년 전 교육청 지정 자연관찰 시범 유치원으로 선정
국내외 교육자들의 롤모델이 돼
김 이사장의 교육 시스템은 곧 여러 곳에서 인정받게 되었다. 교육청에서 자연관찰 시범 유치원으로 지정받았고 약 20여 년 전 MBC 프로그램 ‘차인태의 출발 새아침’, KBS ‘전국은 지금’ 등 TV 프로그램에도 여러 차례 좋은 교육의 형태로 소개된 바 있었다. 또한 외국 교육자들이 종종 방문하여 청학숲유치원의 시설을 보고 갈 정도로 유치원 교육에 있어서는 일종의 롤모델이 되고 있다.
‘교육구청에서도 외국 사람들이 오면 방문을 시켜주고, 그 사람들도 와서 깜짝 놀랍니다. 일본 유치원과 자매결연해서 제가 가보기도 하고 그 쪽에서 오기도 하지만 일본은 대개 땅값이 비싸니 2~300평에 합니다. 제가 갔던 유치원에는 닭이 한 마리밖에 없었어요. 물어보니 사료 값이 너무 많이 들어서 키울 수가 없다고 합니다.’
뿐만 아니라 유치원 졸업생이 결혼하고 자기 아이를 입학시키기 위해 유치원을 다시 찾은 경우도 있었고, 유치원 졸업생 일부는 유아교육과를 졸업한 후 청학숲유치원 선생님이 되어 자신이 누렸던 행복을 아이들과 함께 나누기도 한다. 유아교육과를 졸업한 부인(장정희 원장)과 함께 유치원을 운영하면서 학습 위주 교육에서 벗어나 자연주의 체험 교육과 숲교육에 일신하기로 결심한 선택이 이제 열매를 맺고 있는 것이다.
기본에 충실해야 한다는 신념으로 지켜온 30년
30년이 넘는 세월동안 유치원을 운영했으면서도 김 이사장은 여전히 무엇보다 기본에 충실해야 한다는 생각을 한다고 전했다.
‘아이들의 기초는 자유와 해방감을 느끼고 싶고 환상과 모험을 즐기고 싶은 것입니다. 유아기 때 인생이 결정된다는 논문을 보고 놀란 기억이 있는데, 제가 얼마나 중요한 위치에 있는가를 다시 깨닫게 되는 계기가 됐습니다. 아이들을 볼 때마다 아이들의 인생이 내가 어떻게 하느냐에 달린 것이다 생각하면서 책임감을 갖고 하고 있습니다.’
김 이사장은 이외에도 기독실업인회(CBMC) 활동, 연수구 체육회 이사, 연수경찰서 집시위원장 등 범죄예방 활동 등으로 꾸준한 사회활동을 병행하고 있다. 자나 깨나 아이들을 생각하는 김 이사장의 진심이 청학숲유치원의 아이들을 21세기가 요구하는, ‘감성이 개발된’ 아이들로 키워내고 있는 것이다. 김 이사장의 교육철학이 대한민국 유치원 교육계에 깊은 발자국을 남길 수 있기를 기원한다.

The role model and benchmark for nursery education home and abroad
Located in Yeonsu district, Incheon, the 45 years of tradition Cheonghak Pool is a hot spot for school parents in Incheon. It is not as splendid as water parks but it has a good accessibility and seated on the hill of Cheonghak Mountain which enables it to play a role as an ecology park. And actually this pool is a part of the prestigious Cheonghak Forest Nursery School. The nursery was famous for their eco-friendly facilities and was the very location of the KBS TV drama 'Great Expectations'. The Korea's top bilingual magazine Power Korea has met the chief director Sehoon Kim who is giving his whole effort for children's education.
The educational philosophy of 'experience' and 'nature observation'
Boasting 16 theme forest classes, an ecology park and a zoo
Kim's boyhood took a big part to prompt him to adopt an eco-friendly method when he decided to build a nursery school.
Kim said "my grandfather had an orchard. I visited there when I was five or six years old and I was impressed by a native chicken playing with chicks. Whenever I thought of the orchard I was so happy ever since. Then I decided to share my happy memories with children."
Thus born was Cheonghak Forest Nursery School and it is currently running 16 theme forest classes including a log class, a pine grove class, and a slope class, and other experience areas such an ecology park, a zoo, and nature exploration. Kim thinks that the education for nature observation is most important because it gives children a personality, scientific ability and adopting ability. The nursery school is made of Kim's sweat and effort. He built the park and the zoo by climbing up Cheonghak Mountain everyday and thought about its application plan.
Systematic programmes to attract a good response
Enabling a talent training customized for the age level and progress
Kim thought that there is a limit for children to have an opportunity to experience the nature in the concrete cities. He was convinced that children raising animals, touching them and feeling them with their skin will be a good education for their spirit. Therefore, the nursery is running various seasonal experience programmes to develop children's personality and to give them a satisfaction. They proceed family-participated classes at the camping area and ecology park, and hold special events at Children's Day or Thanks Giving Day. Children have field trips in Dohobu Office Building, the Memorial Hall For Incheon Landing Operation, and Songdo Gas Science Museum and also they feel the four seasonal flavors in the nature. The nursery provides 'Reggio Emilia Project' which is the problem solving & communication class based on the theme arose naturally by the interest of a child, and 'Nuri Class' which is focused on social relationship and natural observation, and 'Native English & Chinese Classes', 'Orff Music Class', and 'Gym Classes'.

Being a role model for educators home and abroad
Kim's educational methods were proved in many places. His nursery was designated as a pilot nursery school for nature observation and he appeared several times on a MBC TV programme 'Chaintea's Start The New Morning' 20 years ago and a KBS programme 'The Nation Now'. Also numerous foreign educators visited the nursery to have a look around its facilities to get some inspiration.
Kim said "the Education Office brings foreign visitors to show our nursery and the visitors get surprised. We set up a sisterhood relationship with several Japanese nurseries and we both exchange the visit but the Japanese nurseries use a 600~900 square meter land only as the land itself is quite expensive. One nursery has only one chicken and I asked why and they said because the fodder is too expensive."
Some parents who graduated the nursery brought their children to be taught here and some became the teachers of our nursery after majoring in Early Childhood Education to share their happiness they had a long time ago here with the children. The principal of the nursery Geonghee Jang(wife of Kim) also majored in Early Childhood Education and both Kim and Jang's passion and efforts on children's experience education in the forest are getting its fruits now.
Retaining their conviction to keep to the basics for 30 years
Although Kim has been running the nursery for 30 years, he was never once neglected on the basics.
Kim said "the basis of children is to feel freedom and to enjoy fantasy and adventure. I was enlightened when I read a report that a person's life is decided in the infancy and I realized how important my job is. Since then, I feel this big responsibility that the children's future depends on me."
Currently, Kim is doing various social activities as a member of CBMC(Connecting Business and Marketplace to Christ), a board member of Yeonsu District Athletic Association, and the chairperson of Yeonsu Police Crime Prevention.
Kim is always truthful to the children and his sincerity is contributing to the development of children's sensibility. Power Korea wishes that Kim's educational philosophy would leave a deep mark in the early education field in Korea.
