An aesthetic inquiry perfected in thick and brilliant matiere technique

Artist Yoon Myoung-hwa

In an exhibition by a Western painting artist, spectators are gazing at one work after another over and again as if not wanting to leave. Her work, overwhelming the viewers in intensive matiere technique, combines East and West, the present and the past, man and the god so masterfully that it addresses us in the same language. This is about the work of artist Yoon Myoung-hwa who justly represents Korea in the field of Western painting. She is currently directors of Korea International Fine Arts Association and Shinmaek Club, representative of MY Gallery, and an Art instructor at the US Air Force Information and Youth Center as well as a freelance photographer.  She is preparing for more opportunities for overseas to present her artistic talent lying within herself.

Power of love brining nature and man into canvas

Artist Yoon Myoung-hwa started painting at the age of seven under the care and support of parents who wanted her to become an artist. As she showed unusual talent in painting early enough, she says she often considers her life as an artist given by the god. It might explain that she gives off some elegance distinguished from other authors who are betraying difficulty with works or everyday life. Her peace in mind seems to transfer wholly to canvas making the tired city people most engaging. ¡°I promised myself to be a world-famous author by close application. Since I was at elementary school, I enjoyed looking around for foreign art magazines and formed liking for works of Monet and Van Gogh. To reach their artistic depth, I started painting along with studying until wee hours. Those hours of assiduous study seem to have made what I am today.¡±

Being familiar with European-style Western painting, artist Yoon ranges diverse genres brining onto canvas everything that makes up the world, including flower, tree, nature¡¯s view, city nightscape, man and god, with power of internalizing them. Especially, her matiere technique boating of her own unique heaviness and brilliant colors reveals that she tried to inspire warmth of life into all things on her canvas with devoted spirit given to each point and line in intensive brush touches. Differing from the line of dark and gloomy expressions of one¡¯s inside by those cubists fond of matiere technique, her work embraces deep awe of nature and broad love of man transcending all time and space. That is why some spectators misunderstand her work for a male painter¡¯s while others do not believe that it is the work by a single person. Besides, her work puts us at ease somehow and her emotion of love included in her work tells some story of perfect love not in an explicit manner. ¡°I rather prefer works in thick matiere and representational painting to non-representational. In sum, the world of art is in the trend of restarting the Renaissance from Europe and I am hoping to participate in that stream through more assiduity of work in the future.¡±

Infinite love from home and abroad with her work encompassing East and West

Since 1994, artist Yoon Myoung-hwa has been invited to the US, France, Spain, Australia, Russia, China, Japan, Taiwan, etc. holding 25 times of private shows and 58 times of group exhibitions at home and abroad. Her works have won such recognition even from overseas that they are included in the book of global masterpieces of the art world. Domestically, her work titled ¡®A beautiful green garden¡¯ won a special recognition at the 33rd National Art Exhibition hosted by the Korea Art Association for representational painting. Her 25th private exhibition held at Insa-dong at the beginning of this July came up in conversation with over a thousand spectators gathered, notably with visits of specialists in related field such as collector, artist, professor, school principal, religious man, and educators as well as the public. Uniquely enough, this exhibition attracted many foreigners. ¡°Interestingly, domestic fans like an exotic feeling of Western painting while foreign people like Korean or Oriental beauty in my work despite Western paintings. It seems to be my own competitiveness to own both cultures and I would like to specify it more.¡± In her earnest preparation for activities in the US and Europe, she is being taught by Prof. Oh Nang-ja (one of the first-batch pupils from the famous Cheon Gyung-ja), a master at Korean painting, to acquire the Oriental-painting flow and curve, character and unique expression. She is ultimately being devoted to a set of work to create her own work in unified East and West suggested by the title of ¡®East meets West.¡¯

Her community service for sharing at home and abroad

Meanwhile, artist Yoon, who had served for two years as president of Yongin chapter of PTPI, a community service group founded by General Eisenhower and later the 34th president of the US, has participated in diverse volunteer work. In this December, the volunteer service team of e-club (Samsung Electronics¡¯ whole staff meeting), of which artist Yoon is a member, is leaving for the Philippines with clothes and food prepared for a thousand unprivileged children. She has practiced noblesse oblige together with his husband Kim Yong Koae and Yongin chapter¡¯s first president (Samsung Electronics¡¯ executive director, Bogwang Group president, and Hana Micron¡¯s standing auditor and former professor at Korea Univ. and Hoseo Univ.) in her activity for serious handicapped, foreign workers, wives at multicultural families as well as medical treatments and sharing for Southeast Asia. She also donated profits from exhibition works for rearing her juniors and needy neighbors. Besides, in her special karma with the US Air Force in Korea she has been teaching their children in art subject for 10 years as donation of talent. ¡°I have been running a gallery for over 25 years, which was as important as being engaged in work. Recently, however, I am only devoted to work. With some more years ahead, I want to set up a larger-sized gallery and have my juniors share the spaces at cost price. It has been another long-cherished dream for me.¡±

For artist Yoon Myoung-wha, who clarified her ambition to make an active debut in the global arena with her unique work in combination of East and West, it seems a real start for her splendid takeoff.
