최첨단 특허기술을 이용한 신제품 ‘디스커버리 Ⅲ’출시

2012년 한국골프지표 자료에 따르면 우리나라 골프인구는 470만 명, 연간 골프 지출액은 23조 원, 골프용품시장은 1~1.5조 원으로, 전체 산업 규모가 25조 원대 이상인 거대 산업으로 성장한 것으로 보고됐다. 특히 대중화의 바람으로 골프용품시장의 성장세가 눈에 띄는데, 90% 이상이 프로를 위해 만들어진 해외 고가브랜드의 제품이라는 것이 아쉬운 점으로 꼽혔다. 하지만 최근 한 늦깍이 대학생이 아마추어 골퍼들에게 희소식을 안겨준 ‘디스커버리 Ⅲ’를 출시해 화제의 중심이 되었다. 골프공의 무게중심을 정렬하는 기술 하나에서 시작해 이제는 세계적인 골프공 브랜드들을 긴장시키고 있는 젊은 CEO 김영준 대표의 스토리는 가히 정부의 국정목표인 ‘창조경제 실현’의 좋은 예로 손꼽힐 만하다.
무게중심을 바로 잡아 평균 5타 이상의 핸디를 줄여주는 골프공
에이스골프(주)는 2011년 설립된 골프공 전문 제조업체로 2012년부터는 온라인 유통 판매를 시작해 왔다. 이곳의 수장을 맡은 김영준 대표는 현재 호남대 골프산업학과 3학년에 재학 중인 만학도로 호남대 창업보육센터와 LINC사업단의 지원 하에 신개념의 골프공을 개발하여 업계의 이목을 집중시켜 온 장본인이다. “현재 사용되는 대다수의 골프공은 두 개 이상의 금형을 맞물려 제조하고 있기 때문에 접합부위를 완벽하게 마감하기 어렵습니다. 쉽게 말씀드리면 골프공이 완전한 구체가 아니라는 건데요, 이런 점에서 착안해 골프공을 개발하게 되었습니다.”
실제로 기존의 골프공의 단편을 잘라봤더니 외피의 두께가 공마다 일정하지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 그로 인해 공마다 무게중심이 달라지는 현상이 생겨나게 되어 골프공의 휨 현상이 발생하게 되는데, 유명 브랜드의 제품마저도 공 하나하나의 중심과는 상관없이 퍼팅라인을 인쇄해 놓고 있는 실정이었다. 이렇듯 골프공이 필드 위에서 예상 못할 방향으로 휘는 현상은 프로선수들 조차도 난감한 상황이지만 특히 아마추어 골퍼들에게는 큰 걸림돌로 작용하기 마련이었다.
김 대표는 수많은 시행착오 끝에 완벽한 형태의 밸런스와 무게중심을 정렬하는 기술의 이론을 완성하였고, 관련 기술로 국내특허 및 해외특허까지 획득하기도 했다. 이 특허 받은 기술을 골프공에 적용하여 공에 존재하는 단 1개의 퍼팅 라인을 정확히 찾아서 마킹하는데 성공하였고, 이른바 듀얼 밸런스 골프공의 개발을 성공적으로 완성했다. “골프공마다 존재하는 하나의 중심점을 찾아서 소비자가 알 수 있도록 표시를 하게 되었습니다. 그래서 저희는 이번 신제품이 퍼팅 때문에 애를 먹는 아마추어 골퍼들에게 큰 도움이 될 것이라 기대하고 있습니다.”
업체의 한 관계자는 ‘디스커버리 Ⅲ’가 퍼팅라인을 정확히 찾아내 그린 위에서 발생하는 골퍼들의 어려움을 덜어준 제품이라 호평하며, 실제로 플레이한 골퍼들이 평균 5타 이상의 핸디를 줄이는 효과를 봤다고 밝혔다.
해외시장 진출로 대한민국 중소기업의 힘을 보여줄 것
최근 많은 매체들에서 ‘디스커버리 Ⅲ’의 우수성을 앞다투어 보도한 바 있다. 특히 MBC 뉴스에서는 기존의 유명 브랜드의 골프공을 평지에 놓고 기계로 퍼팅하는 실험을 통해 예상치 못한 방향으로 구르는 현상을 관찰하며, 단 1개의 퍼팅라인을 정확히 찾아 마킹한 김영준 대표가 개발한 제품의 우수성을 보도하기도 했다.
이러한 ‘디스커버리 Ⅲ’에 대한 해외시장의 반응 역시 벌써부터 뜨겁다. 이에 에이스골프는 호주와 중국 등에 지사를 개설하여 이미 해외시장으로 수출을 시작하였으며, 현재 미국, 일본, 뉴질랜드에 지사를 준비 중에 있다. “세계 최초로 완벽한 형태의 밸런스와 무게중심을 잡아낸 골프공 ‘디스커버리 Ⅲ’의 우수성을 해외로 알려 나가고 싶습니다. 또한 세계적인 골프 브랜드와 어깨를 나란히 하는 일류 기업으로 성장할 수 있도록 앞으로도 끊임없이 연구개발에 매진해 나갈 계획입니다.”
호남대 BI센터와 LINC사업단에서 에이스골프가 이번 신제품 개발로 세계적인 기술력을 확보한 만큼, ISO 인증 지원과 글로벌화를 위한 멘토링 프로그램, 홍보, 마케팅 지원에 나서겠다고 밝혀 해외 진출에 대한 기대감을 한껏 높였다. 에이스골프는 올해 12억 매출에 이어, 내년에는 30억 매출을 목표로 달려 나간다는 방침이다.

According to 2012 Korea Golf Index, the number of Korean golfers reached 4.7 million with the annual expenditure of 23 trillion won($21 billion), market worth $1~1.5 billion, and the total scale of the industry worth $23 billion. Despite its growing popularity, it is regretful that more than 90% of the products are expensive foreign brands made exclusively for pro golfers. Yet, a mature university student introduced his brainchild 'Discovery III' for amateur golfers and is the talk of the town. With the technology to align the center of gravity of a golf ball, the young CEO of Ace Golf spooked the global golf ball brands. And his story became a good example of 'Realization of Creative Economy' which is the key policy of the Park administration.

Ace Golf is a golf ball manufacturer established in 2011 and started their online sales from 2012. The CEO Youngjun Kim is currently a junior student at Honam University majoring in golf industry. He developed the ball supported by LINC Business Agency. Kim said "the existing golf balls are made by two molds which make it difficult to finish the joint smoothly. In other words, the balls are not exactly round and this prompted me to develop the perfect ball."
To prove his theory, an experiment to cut an existing ball in half has been carried out and the result was indeed that the thickness of covering was not even. This causes the difference of each ball's center of gravity which causes another problem called the 'bending phenomenon'. To solve this problem, famous foreign brands mark a putting line on each ball regardless its center of gravity. This bending phenomenon, which the ball flies to unexpected directions, makes even the professionals embarrassed themselves but for amateurs, it is the single biggest obstacle. After many trials and errors, Kim finally developed the perfect ball and acquired a patent both domestic and abroad. He succeeded to mark the right putting line and completed the development of so called 'duel balanced golf ball'. Kim said "we were able to mark the putting line on each ball and we are expecting that it will help amateur golfers find the mark easily."
An official of the related industry praised 'Discovery III', and the players who have tried the ball said that they were able to reduce more than five stroke handicap.
Power of Korean small & medium business to show off in the global market.
Many media have scrambled to get the news recently. Especially, MBC News reported the ball's excellency by carrying out an experiment between the existing balls and the ball. The world response to 'Discovery III' is also heated up. Accordingly, Ace Golf finished launching brach office in Australia and China and has started exports, and currently is preparing to open branch office in US, Japan and New Zealand. Kim said "I would like to spread the world's first perfect ball 'Discovery III' to the world and we will do our best to carry out continuous R&D for Ace Golf to grow into a global company."
Honam University's BI center and LINC Business Agency showed their ambition to support ISO Certification, mentoring programmes, advertisement and marketing. Ace Golf is planning to achieve 1.2 billion won($11m) sales this year, and $2.8m next year.
