Finding an eco-friendly heating system from our ancestor's excellent underfloor heating culture.

Valley Stone CEO of Changwha Shin.

It is late autumn. While our body is trying to adopt to great temperature difference between day and night, we yearn for the traditional Korean underfloor heating system. The system is the original form of floor heater which is difficult to build and use and has now almost disappeared. But thanks to the consideration about the eco-friendly life and the need of fuel efficiency, the system has come back to us. Valley Stone is leading the 21 century heating culture by maximizing its good points and improving its bad points. The Korea's number one bilingual magazine Power Korea has met the CEO Changwha Shin and learned about the new status and role of the Korean underfloor heating system in this modern world.

Valley Stone is born when natural principle meets modern technology.

Shin expresses himself as someone who has been living with soil and is creating products from the ideas inspired by the soil. He defines soil as the mother of all living things as it gives coolness in summer and warmness in winter. He felt sorry for our excellent underfloor heating culture disappearing and has been giving a lot of efforts to revive it in modern terms. Thus born was a technology-condensed heating device which keeps the heat for 6 days once it gets heated up, and acquired a patent for this. Shin said "the existing floor heating products heat up the floor by circulating hot water or using electricity which keep requiring the use of energy, but Valley Stone has a function to keep the heat for many days which enables to reduce the heating costs."

As the world is spurring up for reducing the emission of greenhouse gas and carbon, Shin also is spurring up for developing our ancestor's excellent heating system in modern terms in order to lead the change of heating culture. After numerous trials and errors he always found the answer from the nature. Rainwater gets absorbed into soil, stones and trees, and then the water flows through valley to the sea, and the sea turns into vapor, and goes up to the sky again to form the rainwater. This is the nature's circulation principle and Shin applied it to his Valley Stone. Shin said "the Korean underfloor heating culture is our precious treasure and a great asset as it has our ancestor's foreknowledge and breaths. I will do my best to carry on the culture, develop and transfer it to the next generation."

The system actually has a long history but there is little research on this. It is Shin's ambition to systematize the research and to lead its modernization.

Contributing to national energy policy as an alternative for high oil price.

Underfloor heating system starts from red clay, flat stones, and fire and goes back to the nature. It is the basic heating system without using fossil fuels, and Valley Stone uses only eco-friendly products. Shin has been trying for a long time to turn firewood, which produces carbon monoxide, to carbon dioxide by completely combusting the firewood. He also has tried an experiment for 73 times to develop the technology which prevents the crack of red clay so that the smoke does not leak. He innovatively reduced the red clay's air layer and gap for its longevity, and added mineral to maximize the red clay's effectiveness. Currently, Valley Stone is applying for patents for the related technology such as eco-friendly matching technology. Shin said "the method is that the underfloor heating system increases the temperature in a room by using the heat generated from the fire room, and this heat uses heat storage system. The biggest advantage of Valley Stone is that it has the fire room which controls the heat unit according to the size of the room." Above all, because Valley Stone uses rotten woods or cheap fuel wood, it boasts superior heating system in terms of energy costs and eco-friendliness.

If it used widely, it can contribute to the national energy policy and can give practical supports for low-income households or elderly who have to depend on electric pad to overcome winter due to high oil price. Especially, Shin strongly believes that Valley Stone will play a bigger role to lay the foundation for promoting senior citizen community centers, village halls, Hanok(traditional Korean house) complex, and rural housing which is one of the central and local government's projects. Shin said "I would like to spread our underfloor heating culture to the world by continuous R&D. We will reduce the construction cost to popularize our eco-friendly heating system, and for this, we are planning to build our own manufacturing factory."

Shin is worried about the fact that people use energy like they use disposable toilet paper. Power Korea looks forward to seeing the innovative change of heating culture of the world through Shin's sincerity on traditional culture and environment.
