Independence activist of the month : Jing Han (20 February 1886 ~ 22 February 1944)

¢Â To keep the nation with Korean dictionary compilation ¢Â

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, the Korean Liberation Association, and Independence Hall jointly chose Jing Han, who devoted his whole life to Keeping the Korean alphabet, as the independence activist of the month. Han was born in Seoul and participated in the Korean Dictionary Compilation carried out by Gyemyeong-gurokbu(Korean enlightenment group), and when it was stopped, he joined in the Korean Study Group to carry on the task. He was active as a member of compilation committee with Yoonjae Lee from 1929 to 1932, and became a member of Korean Language Group in 1931. He devoted his life to enact the standard Korean and compile a Korean dictionary ever since. He was also active as a full-time member of the Korean Dictionary Compilation Committee from April 1936 to September 1942. Due to the committee's small salary, Han had to work in the evening as a proofreader in a printing house, but he unceasingly wrote manuscripts in advance for the dictionary. Han wanted to release the unified Korean dictionary to the world as soon as possible so that the Korean and the Korean people would be prosperous for ever. However, Japan arrested the people of the committee as a part of their policy to obliterate the Korean language. Han also was arrested, tortured and died in 1944. The Korean government conferred Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal to Han in 1962. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is expected to hold an academic lecture on enhancing merits on 31 October honoring Han's contribution to the nation. They are also going to open a photo exhibition that contains Han's life and independence movement for one month(October) at Independence Hall and Seodaemun Prison History Hall.

The Korean War heros in October - first lieutenant Seungwoo Kang, and staff sergeant Youngkwon Ahn and Kyubong Oh.

"No retreat an inch of ground."

Three heros of the Battle of White Horse; first lieutenant Seungwoo Kang, and staff sergeant Youngkwon Ahn and Kyubong Oh!

It is the story about those three heros who threw their bodies with bombs into the enemy's machine gun point at the Battle of White Horse, the most pierce battle ground in the Korean War. A second lieutenant Kang was born in Sungsan town, Jeju, in 1930, and graduated from Osaka Heungkook Industrial School, Japan, and was appointed as a second lieutenant in August 1951. A private first class Ahn was born in Geumsan, Gimje city, Geonbuk, in 1925, and enlisted in the army on 27 February 1952. A private first class Oh was born in Sungwhan town, Chunan city, Chungnam, in 1928, and graduated from Sungwhan elementary school, and participated in the war as a rifleman at 1st company of 1st battalion of 30th regiment of 9th division on 11 April 1952. Just before the armistice agreement, the pierce battles were took place at White Horse for 10 days and the owner of the plateau was changed as many as 7 times from 6 October 1952. As the clear weather kept on going, the 9th division predicted the enemy's attack and was repairing the stronghold when they had a surprise attack and lost the 395 plateau. For this, the 30th regiment of the 9th division launched a counter attack but was much damaged by the Chinese's grenades and the shooting of machinegun. The counterattacking force, the 1st company of the 30th regiment, also failed to retake the plateau. Then private first class Oh rushed into the machinegun point, which gave a great damage to our forces, in order to stop the machinegun in the 60 meter flank, and the platoon leader Kang and private first class Ahn covered Oh with their firepower. Kang also decided to attack the point and crawled forward up to 7 meters from the point and threw TNT and mortar shells. Right that moment, Kang suffered a gunshot in his right hand and dropped a shell but Ahn rapidly picked it up and threw it into the point. And Oh also threw grenades into the point at the same time and eventually the point was destroyed but unfortunately all three died there.

There were called as The Three War Gods of the Battle of White Horse ever since. Honoring their contribution, the Korean government conferred Ulchi Order of Military Merit to them on 1 July 1953, and awarded first lieutenant to Seungwoo Kang, and staff sergeant to Youngkwon Ahn and Kyubong Oh.
