예로부터 산삼과 산양삼은 그 효능이 비슷하나 산에서 자연적으로 키운 삼의 일종으로 인삼에 비해 효능이 월등하여, 우리 선조들에게 신비한 약초로 인식되어 있다. 산삼하면 누구나 떠올릴 사포닌은 알콜해독, 항암 및 항염증 작용, 간기능 보호, 혈소판 응집 억제 등 손에 꼽기에도 많은 효능을 보이고 있다. 그만큼의 효능이 보증되는 약초이기에 산삼을 발견하는 것은 신의 계시가 필요하다고 믿었으며 산삼을 찾아다니는 심마니까지 등장하기도 했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사람들이 쉽게 산삼을 접하지 못하는 것은 깊은 산중에서 저절로 자라기 때문에 대량의 확보가 어렵고 그로인한 비용이 만만치 않기 때문이다. 이런 산삼을 소비자들이 좀 더 다가가기 쉽게 산양삼으로 키워 대중화한 심마니가 있는데 바로 양주의 박점규 대표다.

13년의 경력을 가진 박점규 대표는 산양삼은 그 재배지에 따라 효능이 달라질 수 있으며, 해발 400~500m의 고도와 15%의 경사도, 그리고 80%에 이르는 활엽수의 그늘이 드리워 진 곳으로 아직까지 천혜의 자연을 보존, 산양삼의 재배지로 적격이라 소개했다. 이 곳에 산양 산삼 집단군락지를 개척한 그는 과거부터 호명산에는 자연 산삼이 많이 난다는 얘기를 듣고 심마니들이 호명산 인근에서 숙식을 해결하며 삼을 찾던 곳이라고 호명산에 대한 소개를 덧붙였다. 

현재 호명산 일대에 박점규 대표가 뿌린 산양 산삼 씨앗이 1천만 뿌리정도 될 것으로 파악되고 있으며, 처음 씨앗을 뿌린 이후에는 자연에 모든 것을 맡김으로써 자연 산삼과 가장 유사한 산양 산삼이 자랄 수 있는 환경을 완성했다.

또한, 10년 이상 된 산삼만 재배해 소비자에게 전달하기 때문에 산삼이 가진 약효가 뛰어나고 양주산삼을 먹은 소비자는 몸의 변화를 느낀다며, 반응도 굉장히 뜨겁다. 

가끔 인삼 씨앗을 심어 산삼이라고 판매하는 사람들 때문에 피해를 보기도 하지만 박점규 대표는 신뢰를 바탕으로 소비자에게 믿음을 주는 제품을 생산, 판매하는데 주력하고 있다. 

보통 산삼은 인삼과 생김새가 비슷하지만, 자라는 속도와 효능면에서 분명한 차이를 두고 있다. 우선 머리 부분(노두)의 경우 산삼의 머리는 마디가 여러 개이며 기린 목처럼 긴 반면에, 인상은 머리 마디가 두세 개 정도이고 짧다. 또한, 몸통도 산삼이 인삼보다 작으며 1년에 1g가량 자라는 특성으로 인해 귀한 대접을 받는다. 산삼은 주된 약효성분인 사포닌이 최소 인삼보다 7종류 이상 더 갖고 있으며, 그 양도 수십배에 달하는 것으로 알려져 유해산소를 없애주는 항산화 성분이 뛰어나다.

이런 산삼을 인삼 씨앗으로 재배한 뒤 잘 모르는 소비자를 속이는 행위는 소비자를 우롱하는 것과 같다며, 인삼에 비해 성장속도가 느리고 크기도 작지만, 뛰어난 약효와 효능을 가진 산삼을 제배하는데 만전의 노력을 기울이겠다는 입장이다.  

양주산산영농조합 박점규 대표는 “산삼은 혈액의 흐름을 좋게 하고 조혈작용과 보혈기능이 우수하다. 여기에 심장을 강하게 하는 기능과 혈압을 정상화시키는 기능이 좋아, 간이나 위장병, 당뇨에 특히 효능이 좋다”고 설명했다. 또한 “암을 예방하고 치유를 돕는 효과와 스트레스, 부인병, 정력증진의 장점도 가지고 있어, 단순한 기능식품이 아닌 건강약초”라고 설명했다. 그가 재배에 공을 들이는 이유도 산양삼의 좋은 제품을 보다 다양화하여, 보다 많은 사람들에게 보급함으로써 국민건강에 이바지하고 싶기 때문이다.

앞으로 그는 좀 더 저렴한 가격에 많은 사람들이 산양 산삼을 접할 수 있도록 할 것이며, 산삼주, 산삼차 등 다양한 종류의 산삼기능성 제품을 생산, 판매할 계획도 가지고 있다.

현재 산삼주와 산삼차는 출시 단계로 금년 겨울부터는 무료 시음회장을 만들어 무료로 산삼의 진가를 느낄 수 있는 기회를 제공할 계획이다.
