유채에서 동백, 구상에서 비구상으로 

끊임없이 변주되는 작품 세계의 확장

9월 25일부터 29일까지 개최되는 ‘KIAF 국제아트페어’의 참여를 앞두고 있는 홍승욱 작가는 단호한 목소리로 말했다. 변화를 해야겠다고 다짐했노라고. 수 년 동안 국제아트페어에 참여하고 유럽과 미국을 여행하며 다양한 작품을 접하게 된 그녀의 마음속에서 변화를 향한 강한 의지가 움트기 시작했다. 그것은 기존의 익숙했던 작품 세계와의 결별이자 새로운 언어를 자기화 해야 하는 혹독한 훈련의 시작을 암시하고 있었지만, 그녀는 두려워하지 않고 오히려 더 파격적인 방법으로 변화를 꾀하기 시작했다. 그렇게 4년간 이어졌던 혼자만의 고독한 싸움의 결과물이 이번 ‘KIAF 국제아트페어’에서 그 진가를 발휘하게 된다. 더 모던하고 젊어진 감각으로 더 깊이 세계를 끌어안고 있는 홍승욱 작가를 만나 이야기 나눠봤다.

시대의 조류를 따라서 변화하는 것은 작가의 임무

홍승욱 작가는 우리에게 ‘제주화가’, ‘유채화가’로 익히 알려져 있다. 여대생 시절 졸업여행으로 떠나게 되었던 제주도는 그녀에게 하나의 완벽한 유화작품으로 다가왔다. 그녀는 제주도의 청정한 자연을 화폭에 담아내기 위해 많은 시간을 노력해왔는데, 특히 흐드러지게 피어오른 유채꽃이 미술계에서 가장 강렬한 인상을 남겼다. 이후 다양한 초대전에서 이름을 알리게 되었고, 대중매체에서도 그녀의 작품을 특별 조명하기 시작했다. 홍 작가는 화폭에  제주의 바다와 하늘, 돌담과 흙집, 계절에 따라 변화에 나무와 꽃들의 향연을 다채롭게 펼쳐 왔는데, 그것은 도시인들의 삭막한 감성을 촉촉하게 적셔주는 소중한 단비가 되었다. “중학교 1학년 때부터 그림을 그리기 시작했어요. 화가가 되겠다는 생각은 아니었고, 미술 선생님이 되어 아이들을 가르치고 싶다는 꿈이 있었죠.  오직 그 꿈 하나만을 바라보며 참 성실히도 붓을 들었던 것 같아요.”

세종대학교 회화학과와 동대학원을 졸업한 홍 작가는 점차 자신만의 확고한 예술세계를 구현하게 되었다. 국전에서는 특유의 감성적인 구상작품으로 화려하게 데뷔를 하게 되었고, 이후 9번의 개인전과 200회 이상의 국내외 그룹전에 출품하게 되었다. 또한 SOAF, KIAF, 대한민국 미술대전, 여성미술대전, 남농미술대전, 행주미술대전, 한국미술회화대전, 한성백제미술대전, 글로벌신조형전 등에서 심사위원 및 운영위원을 역임했으며, 현재는 대한민국 미술대전초대작가, 한국미술협회 지역활성화위원장, 서울특별시 미술작품심의위원으로 활약하고 있으며 예원예술대학 대학원  전문가과정 지도교수로 후진을 양성하고 있다. 

겨울 추위를 이겨내고 피어나는 동백꽃처럼 열열이 사랑하라

홍 작가는 다년간 포근한 느낌의 구상작품을 주로 그려왔고, 사람들도 그녀의 자연스러운 순수성을 사랑했다. 하지만 변화를 꿈꾸기 시작한 그녀에게 지금껏 일궈 놓은 예술적 업적도 중요하지만, 그저 기존의 틀을 깨는 새로운 형식과, 새로운 메타포를 찾는 것에 더욱 몰입할 뿐이었다. “더 모던하고 파격적인 형식의 비구상작품을 그리기로 마음먹었죠. 제가 그렸던 구상작품은  작가가 걸어온 하나의 과정이 되었고, 세상은 이미 새로움을 원하고 있으니까요.” 

화가로서의 인생 2막을 열어준 작품의 주인공은 제주 동백꽃이었다. 동백꽃은 추운 겨울을 이겨내고 가장 먼저 피어나는 꽃이었고, 그녀는 어려움을 참고 견디면서 이윽고 어여쁜 꽃망울을 터트리는 동백꽃의 뜨거운 생명력에 매료되었다. 특히 그녀는 동백의 꽃말이 ‘영원한 사랑’이라는 점에서 많은 창작의 아이디어를 얻었다. “새롭게 발표하는 작품들은 ‘love 1, 2, 3’이라는 작품명을 가지고 있죠. 저는 동백을 통해 세상에 존재하는 많은 형태의 사랑을 찬양하고자 했죠. 특히 사랑만을 위한 순수한사랑을 노래할 수 없는 시대를 살고 있는 젊은이들에게 더 간절히 사랑을 꿈꿔야 한다는 메시지를 담고자 했습니다.” 그룹전을 통해 조심스럽게 선보이게 된 ‘love' 시리즈는 국내를 넘어 해외에서도 좋은 반응을 이끌어내고 있다.

작품에 표현된 꽃과 꽃의 관계는 남녀 간의 사랑을 나타내고 주위에 형성되어 있는 다른 꽃들은 사랑의결실로  비추어져 가족간의 아름다운 사랑을 나타내고 있기도 하다. 비구상이기에 하트들의 생김새도 다소 다르고 빨간색으로만 이뤄지던 하트들도 파랑, 노랑 등 완전히 다른 색으로 표현하기도 했다. 마치 세상엔 무수히 많은 사랑의 방법들이 존재하듯 말이다.  

 국내외 여러 전시회에서 앞 다투어 그녀의 작품을 소원하고 있지만 그녀는 2016년 3월로 예정하고 있는 개인전을 통해 대중과 더 가깝게 만나겠다는 계획을 밝혔다. 

젊은 작가들이 좋은 귀감으로 삶아야 할 홍승욱 작가의 의미 있는 변화에 박수를 보내며, 더욱 과감한 시도를 통해 대한민국 미술계의 새로운 부흥을 이끌어 줄 것을 기대해 본다.

From canola to camellia, from representational to non-representational 

Expansion of works in constant variation 

Author Hong Sung-ook about to participate in ‘KIAF International Art Fair’ held from September 25 through 29 said in a firm voice that she had pledged herself to make change. A few years’ participation in international art fairs and travel in Europe and the US in contact with diverse works inspired her with a strong will toward change. Though it implied a farewell to the work she had been accustomed to and the beginning of serious training to make a new language of her own, she was not afraid and started to seek change in a rather exceptional manner. This output from her lonely battle continuing for four years is going to kick really in this ‘KIAF International Art Fair.’ We met author Hong Sung-uk who has come to embrace the world more deeply with a more modern and younger sensibility.          

Changing in the current of times is an author’s duty 

Author Hong Sung-uk is well known as a ‘Jeju painter’ or ‘canola painter.’ Jeju-do she went to on a field trip before her graduation from college presented her a perfect subject matter for oil painting. Her great efforts taking a considerable time to express the pure nature of Jeju-do most dominantly produced the canola flowers in full bloom leaving a strong impression on the art world. Then, making her name in diverse previews, her works began to receive a spotlight from the mass media. Author Hong has been expressing colorfully the sea and skies of Jeju, its stone wall and earthen house and seasonal feast of trees and flowers, which became a precious welcome rain to wet the dry sensitivity of city people. 

“I started out to paint since the first year of middle school. It was not an intention to be an artist but I did dream about an art teacher to teach children. I seem to have held my brushes only too sincerely focusing on that dream.”

After graduating from Sejong University and its graduate school, department of painting, she gradually came to embody her own world of art. She made a brilliant debut in the National Art Exhibition with the representational work of her unique sensitivity and then held nine times of private exhibitions entering her works in over two hundred times of group exhibitions at home and abroad. She also served as a judge and steering committee person on SOAF, KIAF, the Korean Art Exhibition, Women’s, Namnong and Haengju art exhibitions, Korean Painting Art Exhibition, Hansung-Baekje Art Exhibition, Global New Formative Arts Exhibition, etc. Currently, she is acting as an invited artist for Korean Art Exhibition, Korean Fine Arts Association committee head for local activation and a judge for Seoul city’s art works. She is also teaching students as an advisor for professional course of Yewon Arts University graduate school. 

Love passionately like a camellia that comes out 

overcoming the cold of winter

For many years author Hong chiefly painted representational works of warm feelings and people loved her natural purity. However, for her entering in change, artistic achievements she made so far were no more important than being engrossed in finding a new form and metaphor to break the existing framework. “I decided to paint non-representational works with a more modern and exceptional form. The representational work I painted has become one path for an author and the world is already calling for novelty.” 

The hero in her work to open the second life as an artist was a camellia in Jeju. The camellia is the flower that comes out earliest surviving the cold winter and she was captivated by the fervent life force of camellia that bursts out its pretty flower bud enduring that difficulty. Especially, she got many of her creative ideas from the respect that the flower language of camellia is ‘eternal love.’ “My newly released works bear the titles of ‘Love 1, 2 and 3.’ I intended to admire many forms of love existing in the world through the camellia. Especially, I tried to send a message of dreaming love more earnestly to the youths who are living the age that keeps one from singing a pure love for its sake. The series of ‘Love’ shown carefully through a group exhibition is drawing good response from overseas as well as in the nation. 

In her work, relationship between flowers denotes heterosexual love while other flowers forming in the neighborhood is interpreted as the fruit of love suggesting a beautiful love between members of family. Being non-representational, hearts are bearing rather different shapes in completely other colors of blue, yellow, etc. than the past exclusive red color, suggesting that there are innumerable ways of love in the world. 

Though many exhibitions at home and abroad are competing for her works, she declared her plan that she would meet the masses more closely through a private exhibition scheduled for March 2016. 

Giving a handclap to the significant change of author Hong Sung-uk worthy of a good model for young authors, we expect that she will lead along a new revival for Korean world of fine arts through her more daring attempts.
