조각보에 우리 과거와 현대를 담다

아트갤러리 뜨락 고금화 대표

짜투리 천을 모아 붙여 만든 조각보에 예술을 입힌 고금화 대표. 그는 옛것을 모으고 그 속에서 느껴지는 전통의 아름다움에 매료돼 지금의 조각보 작업을 하게 됐다고 전한다.

그의 조각보 작업은 그저 조각보로 끝나지 않는다. 조각보에 인생을 담기도 하고, 자연을 담기도 하며, 혼을 담기도 한다. 

또, 조각난 조각보를 한 땀, 한 땀 이어 붙이면서 각각의 조각보가 가진 뜻이 모여 또 다른 뜻을 품게 되며, 이는 회화로서의 가치에도 전혀 손색이 없는 하나의 작품으로 완성된다.

처음부터 그가 조각보에 관심을 둔 것은 아니다. 골동품, 고가구, 단지, 배냇저고리 등을 수집했던 그는 운반 및 보관에 점차 어려움을 느끼던 찰나, 조각보를 우연한 기회에 접하게 된다. 수집과 보관이 용이하다는 장점과 함께 과거 규방문화의 집약체이며, 우리 전통문화를 품고 있는 하나의 예술품으로 보였기 때문에 그는 현대적 예술감각으로 조각보를 재탄생 시키고 싶다는 생각을 하게 된다.

그렇게 시작한 그의 작업은 조각보를 전통의 방식으로 이어가면서 그 본질을 그대로 보존하고, 현대에 맞는 미적 감각을 추가하기 시작했다. 민화를 그려 넣기도 하고, 옛 여인들이 썼던 소품을 꼴라주 형태로 붙이면서 그만의 독특한 조각보를 탄생시킨 것이다.

그렇게 완성한 작품을 바탕으로 방짜유기박물관에서 진행한 첫 전시회는 단연 성공적이라고 평가된다. 그가 그동안 수집했던 골동품과 고가구 등을 조각보와 함께 전시하며 전통과 현대의 조화를 이룬 전시회라는 평가를 받았고, 관람객들 역시 조각보의 변신에 새삼 흥미를 느끼며 관심을 두지 않던 조각보에서 예술을 볼 수 있었다는 평가를 하기도 했다.

해외에서도 고금화의 작품에 대한 관심은 대단했다. 지난 2013년 프랑스 파리 그랑팔레 미술관에서 개최된 ‘2013 살롱 앙데팡당’전에 작품을 출품했는데, 외국인들의 눈에 비치는 조각보는 국내의 관심을 뛰어넘을 정도였으며, 한국작가들 중 대작으로 현지에서 작품을 판매하기도 했다. 

한국의 아름다움을 조각보에 담아 세계인의 마음을 움직인 고금화 대표는 올해도 ‘2014 살롱 앙데팡당’의 주최 측으로부터 참가요청을 받은 상태다.

수집부터 작품제작까지, 그가 조각보와 쌓은 인연이 올해로 20여 년째다. 대한민국미술협회 이사, 한국미술협회 현대민화활성위원회 운영위원 등으로 다양한 활동을 펼쳐온 그가 조각보를 통해 새로운 예술의 틀을 구축했다는 것에 이견을 표할 사람은 없을 것이다. 이렇게 그는 있는 예술을 따라하기보다는 없는 것을 창조하려는 갈망으로 살아 온 예술가다. 

그런 그가 얼마 전 대구 ‘북성로의 재발견’ 프로젝트에 선정돼 북성로 공구거리 내에 있는 적산가옥을 1층은 아트 갤러리로, 2층은 박물관으로 리모델링하는 작업에 한창이다.

일제시대의 적산가옥을 우리의 문화로 바꾸려는 이번 프로젝트에 자신의 모든 것을 쏟아내고 있는 고금화 대표는 12월 오픈을 목표로 한창 구슬땀을 흘리고 있다.

앞으로 그는 작품활동과 더불어 북성로의 재발견 프로젝트를 통해 우리의 것을 젊은 사람들에게 알리는데 주력하고 싶다는 뜻을 전했다. 앞으로 대한민국을 이끌어갈 청춘들이 우리의 것을 정확히 알고 관심을 가져야 선진국으로 가는 문턱이 조금은 낮아질 수 있지 않겠냐는 뜻에서다. 

사실 조각보나 버선 등 옛 소품 하나로 대한민국의 어제와 오늘을 모두 말할 수는 없지만 서민의 삶을 깊이 품고 있는 옛 전통을 담은 소품을 제대로 아는 것만으로도 우리의 과거를 이해하는데 큰 도움이 될 것이다.

그래서 고금화 대표의 활동이 주목을 받는 것이 아닐까란 생각을 하게 된다.

Carved cloth containing our past and present

Part 1

President Go Geum-hwa clothed art on the carved cloth made by piecing scraps together. He says that he started put the current carved cloth job, fascinated by the ancient things he collected and the beauty of tradition felt in it. 

His work of carved cloth is not just a carved cloth. He expresses one’s life or soul, or nature in it. Besides, as he connects the pieces of cloth stitch by stitch, the meanings of each carved cloth gather together to contain another meaning, which is completed as a work never short of the value as painting.

Part 2

It is not a fact that he paid attention to carved cloth from the beginning. He was collecting curio, antique furniture, jar, infant’s coat, etc. with increasing difficulty with their transport and safekeeping, when he happened to see a carved cloth. It came across as both a summary of the women’s culture in the past feudal society with the strength of easy collection and keeping and an object of art containing our traditional culture. He came to think of recreating the carved cloth with modern artistic sensibilities. Starting this way, his work continued the carved cloth in a traditional way, preserving the essence as it is and adding aesthetic sense suited to modernity. By putting in a folk painting or attaching fancy items used by ancient women in collage form, he created a unique carved cloth of his own. 

Part 3

Based on the work completed that way, he held a successful first exhibition at Bangjja Yugi (Bronze ware) Museum. This event was received as an exhibition in harmony between tradition and modernity by showing carved cloth combined with the curios, ancient furniture, etc. he had been collecting so far, while spectators also appreciated the art of carved cloth interestingly from its transformation they had never imagined. From overseas, too, people showed such a great interest in the works by Go Geum-hwa. In 2013, when he showed works to ‘2013 Salon des Independants’ exhibition held at Grand Palais in Paris, France, he received rather more interest in carved cloth from foreigners than from our country, selling some as a masterpiece among Korean authors’. President Go Geum-hwa, who touched the world people with carved cloth containing Korean beauty, has been asked for re-participation from the organizers of ‘2014 Salon des Independants.’

Part 4 

His connection with carved cloth has been over twenty years - from collection to manufacture of works. No one would throw a doubt on his contribution to a new frame of art through carved cloth, who has acted vigorously as the Korean Art Association director and steering committee member for reviving modern folk painting. Like this, he is an artist living with ardent wish for creation out of nonexistence rather than following the established path of art. Some time ago, he was selected for his project of ‘rediscovery of Bukseong-ro’ in Daegu, engaging in the remodeling job with enemy property houses in its tools street, one-storied into art gallery and two-storied into a museum. President Go Geum-hwa is now devoting himself to this project of transforming the enemy property houses under the Japanese colonial era into our culture with an aim to open it in December.  

Part 5

He suggested his wish to concentrate his efforts on telling our things to the youth through the project of ‘Rediscovery of Bukseong-ro’ as well as making artwork. He believes that it is when our youngsters, leaders-to-be in Korea, know exactly and pay attention to our things that lowers the threshold to an advanced country. In fact, a single small item of carved cloth or Korean socks cannot tell all about the past and present of Korea, but the right knowledge about small articles of old tradition deeply holding the common people’s life will be of big help in understanding our past. This is probably why president Go Geum-hwa’s activity is drawing such attention.
