Won-jwa Lee, the master of ink landscape painting.
Back to infuse aura of culture into his hometown Cheongsong.
Graduated from Hongik University, being a professor at Kangnam University and Gachon University, Lee unexpectedly came back to his hometown to pass his cultural assets. He always missed his hometown and wanted to remind the children of the importance of culture. When he was suggested by Cheongsong county to build a gallery, Lee left everything for good and came back to Cheongsong to settle down. The county invested 800 million won ($700,000) to turn a disused school into a gallery and Lee donated his 360 landscape paintings completed during the last 50 years. With his 40,000 life time collections including 90 Chinese ceramics being exhibited, the gallery is turning into the center of local cultures. If we get into Yasong Gallery, the first thing that greets us is Chung-ryang-dae-un-do (680x4800cm) which covers the whole area of one side of the wall. Visitors get overwhelmed by its sheer size at first, and then marveled by the energy it is erupting. Lee created the biggest painting in the world.
Lee was obsessed with painting that he finished more than six sketchbooks of 1 thousand pages each when he was a high school student. He imitated comics, illustration, croquis, sketches and line drawings. Either at home or at school, he was only interested in painting and thus his career started. When he went to a university he was drawn into ink painting influenced by his teacher Bae Leum and was indulged in the charms of the lines that ink created. However, he found himself copying his teacher and thought he must find his own style in order to develop. So he applied watercolor and rough drawing techniques which he learned when he was a middle and high school student. And this became the basis of his line drawing. He analysed paper, pens and ink through a deep thought about the foundation and drafting, and now he is able to create 'Yasong's style' without painter's sign or explanations. This seems to be the result of his trying to combine the teacher's advice, style and techniques with his own style. He is also famous for creating more than 1 thousand paintings a month. One critic mentioned "rarely an artist paints more than 1 thousand paintings a month and Lee's works cover various genres such as watercolor, folding screen, paintings on stones, hardwood, fan and porcelain, abstract painting and Dubang painting, as well as small paintings like 1cm x 1cm and an enormous one for the Guinness Book of World Records." The critic also praised him that his works can be equal to the Tripitaka Koreana (the complete collection of Buddhist scriptures carved on over eighty thousand woodblocks). For Yasong (Lee), to paint means a track of the time which people live like a decent human being. He might be striving to paint to express the age, the history and his philosophy. He always goes on a sketch trip alone maybe because he wants to pursue sketching from nature by breaking the border between meditation and philosophy so that he can be able to leave a trace as an artist. The reason he retired to his hometown to provide cultural benefits for the local residents through Yasong Gallery might be that he wants to leave something as an artist. Thanks to this, the fragrance of Cheongsong is now different and there are children who are growing their dreams by looking up Yasong(Lee). Many fellow artists following his activities also shows the synergy effect derived from Lee's walk of life.
