Wild flowers made open with handicrafts

Kwak Hwasug, president of Kwak Hwasug Handicrafts institute

Do you know about wild flowers? There is a person who has worked on these wild flowers simply known by most to be flowers blooming alone in barren soil and then made them open with handicrafts. President Kwak Hwasug has recreated wild flowers with her paper for years in an effort to deliver their beauty to those who are ignorant of our own wild flowers in their attachment to Western flowers. The wild flowers made in her hands are so delicate that, however you may study them closely, nobody could tell whether they are natural or artificial. Reviewers say that her handicrafts are a perfect reproduction of the flowers grown up in actual fields or mountains even in the aspects of size, color and shape. To express wild flowers properly, she formed the habit of mountain climbing and continued close observation following a club for filming wild flowers. This led to an opportunity to bring indoors the wild flowers under observation only in wilderness, while her special technique of crystal paper made more delicate and laborious expression possible. This crystal paper processed in special dyeing resists bleaching or discoloration and worked out many problems that could occur in the work of the existing dyeing paper. Besides, after initial dyeing, brush touches using oil-painting dye enabled handicraft wild flowers over 99 percent similar to the real ones.

In an effort to spread to other people her own knowhow and technology piled up in making works so far, president Kwak is currently striving to rear teachers at Bumgye-dong of Anyang city and at Insa-dong. For the course of crystal wild flowers, it is divided into classes for hobby, 2nd degree, 1st degree and teachers, for which inquires about taking her lectures are being flooded from government offices, schools, cultural centers, etc.

She is also training guidance teachers for after-school special activities and giving startup education in a hope to inform more people about the beauty of our wild flowers with more interest. Currently, she is making about 200 works of typical Korean wild flowers including Hanabusaya asiatica, big primrose and yellow iris. When these manufactured wild flowers make their public debut to spectators through a botanical garden, it is giving them an opportunity to rethink about our wild flowers. Such an event makes viewers enchanted by our wild flowers telling them about the beauty of our wild flowers to be fully recognizable in the world with the change of their perceptions accustomed to Western flowers. Recently, she exhibited such works at the detached wing of the Blue House frequented by foreigners and an exhibition particularly held also proceeds in a class to give spectators a learning experience in handicrafts. By dint of the current passionate activities, the institute was committed for modeling and delivered wild flower models to established enterprises, such as See World Design and Exhibition Culture, and has promoted our wild flowers widely through many exhibitions at Inchon Ecological Museum, Chungbuk Museum, Bucheon Botanical Garden, Gwangreung National Arboretum, etc.

In 2005, the Institute honorably won the grand prize by the minister of Culture and Tourism at [Fifth Korea Handicrafts Exhibition for Culture and Tourism] held under the auspices of Korea Handicrafts Association and another grand prize at [Seventh Korea Handicrafts Exhibition]. In the meantime, she has recently manufactured LED flowers in combination of LED with wild flowers drawing much attention from related fields. She succeeded in maximizing the beauty of wild flowers lit by pressing the button by attaching each of small-sized LED lamps of her own developing to wild flowers. This was the original for many types of LED flowers currently on the market. When she developed LED flowers this field was unknown to the world, but now it has settled as such an essential item for artificial flowers that various companies are applying it competitively. These days, she is also devoted to rearing teachers of hard charcoal technology attaching another importance to making work by use of charcoal.

She said that she would do her best to promote the beauty of our wild flowers and draw many people¡¯s attention to handicraft flowers emphasizing the use of our wild flowers for publicizing Korea.

Kwak Hwasug is heading the Wild Flower Independent Section at Korea Handicrafts Association and Kwak Hwasug Handicrafts Institute (for wild flowers).
