Silent message from nature delivered by the close-up ¡®Lotus Leaf¡¯

Artist Nam, Sang-Woon

Purity given by pure green: another nature expressed in there

Artist Nam, Sang-Woon¡¯s object for his art works is ¡®lotus leaf¡¯. When he was a boy, his father did the horticulture business. So, he was always surrounded by the greens but remembers his childhood was poor and lack of money. Lotus leaves in his works imply his difficult time at that time and it is a factor meaning some lack of things to remind of his childhood. If looking at his works precisely, people feel like those lotus leaves speak to them. Unlikely other artists¡¯ works for lotus leaves, Nam, Sang-Woon¡¯s works have no lotus flowers, stems or lotus pips etc as for an object. Veins of magnified lotus leaves and formative, geometric and regular lines of leaves in repeat show something amazing in order. Close-up lotus leaves and detailed water drops in the veins and ladybugs seem to give us unspoken messages. As we know, lots of living things including nature are harmed or disappeared by human beings. During the extinction procedure, humans try to keep them in many ways at the same time. Artist Nam, Sang-Woon has been painting the nature¡¯s warnings throughout his works because nature is giving us plenty of alerts about what humans are doing.

¡°¡°We are secretly consuming the nature excessively for our profits and convenience and producing false nature instead. Probably, some don¡¯t understand what the false nature means. It is what we are trying to make our offices and home look more naturally but the nature is out there and it doesn¡¯t fit in the tiny space at all. Due to that happening, we are going to live in the false nature, which looks more real than the real nature. Isn¡¯t that so selfish and stupid? Our desire never stops.¡±¡± Like that, artist Nam, Sang-Woon¡¯s works have serious message from nature that we see but we cannot see something there and they seem to point out wrong things of dual faces of the society controlled against the truth.

His lotus leaves have water drops and ladybugs together. Those water drops look like tears of nature and sad and the ladybugs look like a weak character of human begins in the gigantic nature. In the past, he expressed the naturein green but lately, his color is getting more into deep blue. This deep blue in color has sadness to show another nature and is saying that nature is alerting us. Artist Nam, Sang-Woon is the person who is saying that artists have to show more something inside. His message with unique painting skills and methods make us comfortable and also some bitter advice to complicated modern people.
