구조적 원리와 물질의 특성이 담겨 있는 또 다른 조형의 세계

예술을 하는 작가라 하면 자신만의 철학을 바탕으로 세상에 존재하지 않는 그 누구도 생각하지 못했던 결과물들을 보여줘야 한다. 이는 모든 예술인들이 풀어야할 숙제이고 관객들이 원하는 바일 것이다. 이번에 만나볼 이은상 조각가의 작품 역시 내면에 확고한 작가의 생각을 담은 채 현실과 마주하고 있다. 스테인리스 스틸을 중심으로 물질이 주는 특성과 구조적 원리를 내세우며 금속조형에 새로운 방향을 제시하는 이은상 작가의 세련된 감각이 돋보이는 조형세계를 만나보았다.        

스테인리스 스틸로 표현된 미지의 세계 

이은상 작가의 작품은 주로 철판과 스테인리스 스틸이라는 물질의 특성을 강렬하게 표현하며 방사형의 형태로 나타내어지고 있다. 그 형태는 불꽃같기도 하고 마치 저 멀리 우주에서 빛나는 별의 형태로 보여 지기도 한다. 이처럼 단순한 방사형의 조형물이지만 내면에는 자연이라는 거대한 의미도 담고 있으며, 금속이 갖고 있는 그대로를 용접의 방식이 아닌 판들이 맞닿는 면을 볼트로 처리해 금속이 갖고 있는 휘는 성질과 장력 등을 있는 그대로 표현해 최대한 물질의 특성을 살리고 있다. 여기서 표현되는 방사형의 형태는 우리가 흔히 볼 수 있는 자연에서도 찾아 볼 수 있다. 겨울에 내리는 하얀 눈의 결정체, 거미줄의 모습 등이 자연 그대로의 방사형의 형태이다. 그렇기에 이은상 작가의 작품은 세상에 존재하지 않는 것을 표현하지만 편안한 마음으로 보고 즐길 수 있는 것이 아닐까싶다.      

“판을 재단하고 볼팅이 아닌 용접 방식으로 작품을 표현했다면 아마 금속이 주는 원초적인 느낌을 낼 수 없다고 생각해요. 판과 판의 만남이 의도한 느낌이 아닌 각 작품마다 다른 형태의 느낌을 낼 수 있는 것은 금속들 마다 갖고 있는 성질이 다르고 풍기는 느낌이 다르기 때문이라고 생각합니다.” 이렇듯 이은상 조각가의 작품은 생성원리라던지 물질의 특성 구조의 결합원리를 잘 나타내고 있으며 이런 맥락들이 장식적인 요소나 조형적인 요소들에서 출발 한 것이 아닌데도 결과적으로 기아학적인 형태나 조형적인 느낌으로 보여 지기도 하는 것 같다.    

작품의 또 하나의 볼거리는 바로 한 작품, 한 작품씩 보여 질 때와 여러 작품을 함께 전시했을 때의 느낌이 다르다는 점이다. 바닥과 벽면에 펼쳐지는 작품과 작품에서 나타내어지는 빛들은 마치 행성 하나하나가 모여져 만들어지는 우주를 방불케 한다. 이는 작가의 의도와는 다른 작품들끼리의 이야기처럼 느껴졌다.  

미디어아트라는 새로운 도전

최근 이은상 작가의 횡보가 눈에 띈다. 가장 최근 선보인 그의 개인전에서 태아의 심장박동소리, 전등 불빛에 사로잡혀 있는 나방의 날갯짓, 가로등 불빛과 LED 표지판의 점멸, 거울에 비친 눈의 깜박거림, 빔 프로젝트를 거울에 반사해 기존 사각형으로 보여 졌던 영상물들의 틀을 깨는 작업 등을 선보이며 새로운 퓨전 예술을 보여줬다. 이후 기존의 작품과는 완벽히 다른 미디어아트를 시도하며 다른 분야의 예술인들과 함께 협업해 공연을 하거나 다큐멘터리에 참가해 기존의 조형물과는 다른 시도를 하고 있는 것. 얼마 전 LIG아트홀에서는 로봇틱스에 관련된 예술을 선보였다. 손가락이나 인형에 프로그래밍을 삽입해 무선으로 직접 컨트롤 하는 것은 물론 토이피아노와 총을 유선으로 연결해 건반을 누르면 총이 앞에 있는 실로폰에 맞춰져 음악을 연주할 수 있는 작품을 선보이기도 했다. 이는 총이라는 위협적이고 폭력적인 성향의 도구도 새로운 감정들을 투영시켜 총소리도 노래가 될 수 있다는 의미를 부여했다. 이런 공연을 바탕으로 새로운 영감과 함께 모든 예술적 감각을 익히겠다는 뜻이다. 이은상 작가의 새로운 도전들은 올해 ebs 악기의 전쟁이라는 프로그램에서 만나볼 수 있다.    

늘 새로운 시각으로 도전하고 있는 이은상 조각가. 그의 열정이 만들어갈 또 다른 예술은 관객들을 감동시키기에 충분해 보였다.  

Another world of structural principle and material characteristics

An author engaging in art should exhibit the result that has never existed before in the world and been thought of by anyone based on his own philosophy. This must be the assignment for all artists to solve and practically what is wanted by spectators. Sculptor Lee Eun-sang’s work released this time is also facing the reality with the author’s firm thought contained inside. We met author Lee Eun-sang and his formative world that sets off his refined sensitivity putting up material characteristics and structural principle with a focus on stainless steel and proposing a new direction of metal molding. 

Unknown world expressed in stainless steel 

Author Lee Eun-sang’s work chiefly expresses the characteristics of the material, such as iron plate and stainless steel, in radiant form. These shapes look like a flame or stars shining from the far-off universe. Though such a simple radiant sculpture, it contains a gigantic meaning of nature and treats the faces of plates in mutual contact by bolts, not by welding, expressing the bending property, tension, etc. of metals as they are reviving the characteristics of material as far as possible. This radiant form of expression here can be also found in the nature we often come across. Crystal of the white snow falling in the winter, cobweb shape, etc. are the radiant forms in the raw. Probably that’s why we can enjoy author Lee Eun-sang’s work feeling comfortable despite an expression of things that don’t exist in the world. 

“To express the work by welding, not by bolting, after cutting out the plate wouldn’t have expressed the primitive feeling of the metal. It is because each metal has different property and impression that meeting between plates can give a different feeling for each work, not intended one.” Like this, sculptor Lee Eun-sang’s work represents the principle of generation or material combination of characteristic structure while it resultantly looks like a geometric form or formative feeling though such contexts didn’t start from decorative or formative elements.    

Another sight of work is that it gives different feelings between each work shown and many works exhibited together. Works spread on the floor and wall face and lights expressed in the work remind us of the universe made by gathering each of the planets. This seemed like a story among the works, which is different from the author’s intention. 

A new challenge of media art 

Lately, author Lee Eun-sang has shown a different movement. In the latest solo, he exhibited a fetus’ heartbeat, a moth’s wingbeat stuck to an electric light, blink of streetlight and LED sign, blink of eyes reflected in a mirror and reflection of beam project on a mirror breaking the existing frame of videos shown in a rectangle, as a new fusion art. Then, he has tried media art completely different from the existing work, putting it on in cooperation with artists of different fields or participating in documentary to make a different attempt from the existing sculpture. Some time ago, he showed an art related to robotics at LIG Art Hall. He also exhibited work that you can control wireless in person by inserting programming in a finger or doll as well as play music by pressing the keyboard, which adjusts a gun to the xylophone in front, in connection of a toy piano to the gun by wire. This suggested that even a threatening and violence-natured instrument of gun can give birth to a shot of songs by projecting new emotions. This performance is intended to practice all artistic sensitivities with new inspirations. Sculptor Lee Eun-sang is constantly challenging in a new perspective and another art coined by his passion seemed enough to touch the spectators.   

“Self-similarity", 혼돈과 질서

복잡한 기하학적 구조를 이루는 형태는 버핑되어 거울처럼 반사되는 스테인리스 스틸의 표면과 어우러져 낯선 물질감으로 다가온다. 전체의 모습과 그의 한부분의 모습이 유사한 형태로 이루어진 물체나 파장 등을 표현할 때 자기유사성이라고 한다. 복잡한 기하학적 구조로 보여 지는 형태는 같은 형태의 금속판이 반복적으로 배열되어 전체의 구조를 이룬다. 아주 단순한 결합구조의 반복이지만 질서 속의 작은 변화를 통하여 부분은 전체가 되고 전체는 부분이 된다.
