Promoting public health with quinoa and amaranth

Quinoa Chaebol's CEO Cho Daljoo

The consumption of rice has significantly decreased recently due to a change of diet but the interests of wellbeing food such as super grains has been increasing instead. Among those super grains, the sales of Inca's quinoa and amaranth which contains more protein than milk has increased sharply. Quinoa especially is classified by the National Academy of Sciences (US) as the top source of protein and NASA chose it as food for astronauts. UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon highly praised its abundant nutritional contents and made 2013 as the year of quinoa in order to alleviate world hunger. In Korea, CEO Cho Daljoo of Quinoa Chaebol is at the centre of popularity to distribute those super grains.

Providing highly nutritious products

Quinoa Chaebol is a seeds distribution company which provides quinoa, amaranth, basil seed and chia seed with their moto 'let's find health from the nature!' Cho knew quinoa and amaranth by chance when he watched a TV programme which introduced both grains and after preparing one year he established Chodal Total Distribution (Quinoa Chaebol) in March 2013. "We are currently importing quinoa and amaranth directly from Peru, basil seed from India, chia seed from Mexico and we will do our best to introduce healthy food to Korea" said Cho. Quinoa is a Inca's traditional grain that grows high in the mountains 3000 meters above sea level. Quinoa means 'the mother of grains' in the Inca language and people started to cultivate it from 3000 ~ 4000 years ago in Andes region and it is known as the source of protein for the Inca people. It is now in the spotlight of diet food as it helps to prevent diabetes, high blood pressure and anticancer, as well as it is good for children's brain development. The great advantage of quinoa which Cho imports from Peru is that they do not use any agricultural chemicals or antiseptic. Amaranth, on the other hand, means 'flower that never wither'(aka 'the grain from God') and has been cultivated by people for 5000 years. A study showed that it is rich in essential amino acid and contains a lot of calcium, phosphorus, iron and recently squalane and therefore it is very effective in skin care and anti-aging. "It has been difficult to popularize quinoa and amaranth in Korea because the government has been protecting the Korean agricultural industry as rice is our staple crop. But I'm sure that we can provide it at a more reasonable price by overcoming the tariff barrier as the demands from people are increasing" said Cho.

Cultivating quinoa and amaranth in Korea

Cho has been trying hard to cultivate quinoa and amaranth in the Korean soil. Quinoa was difficult to cultivate as it usually grows in subarctic regions while amaranth adopted well to the Korean climate as it is a subtropical crop. A research in June 2013 from Korea's Highland Agriculture Research Centre of the Rural Development Administration showed a new possibility that amaranth vegetable has more nutritive value than spinach and it contains 5 times more sulfuric acid activity, 8 times more phenol, 2 times more protein, 11 times more calcium and 6 times more kalium than amaranth seed. Also if it is cultivated as herbs in vinyl greenhouse between 30 and 40 days in spring, about 30 days in summer, about 35 days in autumn, we can harvest more than 6 times in a year. "Around 3 tons of amaranth is being harvested in Gwangju and Sungnam in Gyeonggi province at the moment. We are planning to develop germinated quinoa and amaranth which can be used in vegetables, juice, extract, powder and tea as well as processed food such as baby food, cookies, cereal, drinks and bread" said Cho. In accordance with UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon's high praise on the grains as the second generation alternative food for the future, Cho is sending quinoa and amaranth, through missionaries, to North Korea, Africa, China and Tibet where many people are suffering from hunger. "I believe, like Lim Sangok (a wealthy merchant in the Choson dynasty period) said, 'business is not about to make profit but to make people'. I'll endeavor to promote public health by introducing world's excellent grains to the Korean people" said Cho. He will not stop his passion and commitment until bad eating habits and world hunger are removed.
