현실과 이상의 괴리감을 없앤 ‘여인의 아름다움’ 표현

임종두 작가는 28세에 실존적 문제들을 조형화한 작품 ‘생토’로 대한민국미술대전에서 대상을 거머쥐며 화단의 주목을 받기 시작했다. 그는 원색이나 순색을 혼합하지 않고 중첩해서 쓰는데 장지 위에 반영구적 불변색인 석채와 수정가루 등을 말려가면서 원하는 빛깔이 드러날 때까지 20여회 이상의 작업을 반복한다. 그러면 비로써 은은한 깊이, 선명한 채도의 붉은색이 우러난다. 중심이 되는 색은 우리의 전통적인 오방색으로 작가는 특히 붉은색에 애착을 갖고 있으며 배경은 물론 여인의 몸과 얼굴에도 이 붉은색을 쓴다.
그의 작품에는 여인이 등장한다. 여인처럼 신비롭고 알 수 없는 존재가 또 어디 있으랴, 단조로운 색채를 사용하지만 이토록 강렬할 수도 없다. 무엇과도 혼합되지 않은 원재료의 아름다움을 그는 선호한다. 그리고 그 물성의 순수함 안에서 명쾌하게도 자신만의 소신을 담아내며 자연스러운 아름다움을 마음껏 발산한다.
입자의 굵기에 따라 다양한 표현을 할 수 있다는 석채작업과 더불어 금박을 이용해 현대사회의 물질만능을 희화시키고 있는 그는 재료에 대한 정확한 이해를 통해 기술적인 어려움 없이 작품을 해내는 것이 관건이라고 말한다.
그는 스스로 만족하는 작품이라야지 관객들도 감동시킬 수 있다며 실험삼아 다작을 하기 보다는 한 점을 내더라도 관객과 호흡할 수 있는 ‘작품(作品)’으로 관객과 만나겠다고 밝혔다. 현실과 이상의 중간 그 어디쯤이 바로 예술의 경지가 아닐까? 작품을 통해 진정한 작가의 경지에 오를 그날을 기대해 본다.
인간이 지구를 지배하기 전에는 초목들이 지천으로 널려 꽃을 피웠다. 특이한 종이 출현하기 이전의 야생의 숲, 이것은 작품에서 의복과 머리, 배경 전체에서 수를 놓듯이 꽃으로 장식한 연유가 되었다. 독특하게 꽃이 인간의 머리카락에까지 그려진 것은 초목의 구조와 인간의 신체구조로 볼 때 꽃이 인간의 머리 부분에서 개화를 한다는 것과 관련이 있다. 인간의 형상을 통해 천지동근과 만물일체를 꾀하면 화의가 너무 과할까! 인간 본성의 원형질을 찾고 발굴해 가는 그림, 초목처럼 자라고 숨 쉬는 그림, 자연과 인간이 어우러져 사랑을 키우는 그림은 내가 도달하고자 하는 그림이다. 따라서 자연과 인간에 대한 관계를 되새기며 자연과 인간의 합일을 추구한 것이다. 임종두 작가는 전남대 예술대학 및 중앙대 대학원을 졸업했다. 아트타운 갤러리(광주), 예향화랑(광주), 한국국제아트페어(KIAF, 본화랑), 예술의전당 한가람미술관(서울) 등에서 개인전 18회를 가졌으며 K-Art전(갤러리 고도, 서울), 부산국제아트페어(BEXCO), 서울오픈아트페어(SOAF) 등 400여 회의 그룹전에 출품했다.

Expressing the beauty of women with taking out the isolation between the reality and the idea world
Artist Lim, Jong-Doo
Artist Lim Jong-Doo started getting attention since he got the first place in the Korea Art Competition with his work ‘Living Soil’, which is modeling an existence problem when he was 28. He doesn’t blend original colors or pure colors, but instead of it, he just overlaps the colors until he wants and it is usually over 20 times of painting repeatedly. Then, there is the red with a delicate depth and a clear chroma. His main colors are our five traditional colors, but especially, he is addicted to red color and using this color in women’s faces and bodies including the backgrounds.
There is always a lady in his works. Using simple colors, but his works couldn’t be stronger than others. He prefers the beauty of original materials that mix without anything. And, so clearly, he is putting his view in there and showing off the natural beauty out of it freely.
According to him, he can make various expressions with a thickness of particles as a stone-color work and also use gold leaves to make a caricature of the modern society, but the key point is to work out keeping going throughout the correct understanding without any technical difficulty. He said that he could move the audience with artworks that the artist is satisfied first, therefore, he addressed that he would like to meet people by his any work that can breathe with them. Isn’t it somewhere between the reality and the ideal world? We expect to see him rising up to the true artist by a work. Before human beings rule the earth, there were only plants and greens everywhere to bloom. A wild forest before appearing a certain species, it was a cause of decorating with flowers. Distinctively, painting flowers up to humans’ hairs is related to that the flowers are blooming on their heads by looking at the body structure.
Throughout the shapes of human beings, if the same roots of everything on earth and one unity of nature are considering, reconciliation is that too much! Paintings that I am aiming for are that I am finding a human nature and growing like plants and trees. Therefore, my art works are that I was seeking for unification between nature and human by thinking of them at the same time.

Artist Im, Jong-Doo graduated from Jeonnam University Art School and a graduated art school of Joongang University. He has had 18 times of private exhibition at Art Town Gallery (Gwangjoo), Yeahyang Gallery (Gwangjoo), KIAF (BON Gallery), HANGARAM Gallery of Seoul of Art and used to take a part of some group exhibitions like K-Art Exhibition (Gallery GODO, Seoul), BEXCO, SOAF and 400 times of other galleries as well.
