거울 속에 비춰지는 내면의 또 다른 모습

우리가 흔히 말하는 예술은 세상을 바꾸는 힘을 갖고 있다. 어떤 이들은 이것으로 인해 깨달음을 얻기도 하고 어떤 이들은 이것으로 인해 편안함을 찾듯, 예술이란 장르는 삶에서 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 중대한 부분을 맡고 있다. 그중 미술은 매우 창의적인 분야로써 우리 삶에 가장 가까운 곳에서 다양한 감정을 느끼게 하고 있다. 존재하지 않는 소재와 창의적인 작품의 조화가 작가들의 영원한 숙제일 것이며, 그 숙제를 풀어낸다면 관객들에게 신선함과 특별함을 안겨 줄 것이다. 그래서 월간 파워코리아는 거울이란 소재를 이용해 그간 볼 수 없었던 표현력으로 관객들에게 내면의 또 다른 모습을 상상하게 만들고 있는 한수민 작가의 작품을 만나보았다. 

거울과의 특별한 만남, 그리고 새로운 세상

한수민 작가의 그림에서 만나 볼 수 있는 것은 우리가 매일매일 보게 되는 거울이다. 거울은 누구에게나 나의 모습을 보는 하나의 도구였지만 그는 자신의 상징적인 소재로 사용하고 있다. 거울을 바탕으로 아름다운 여성상을 상징하는 작품과 꽃의 아름답고 화려한 모습을 담고 있는 한수민 화가의 작품은 일정한 평면 위에 서식하는 이미지가 아닌 입체적 감정을 느낄 수 있는 작품이다. 장지에 채색으로 곱게 마감된 화사한 꽃 사이에 보이는 거울은 관객들에게 보임과 보여짐이라는 새로운 효과를 주고 비춰지는 자신들의 모습에서 당시의 감정을 느낄 수 있어 더욱 특별함을 불러일으키고 있다. 그 감정들은 화사한 꽃 사이에서 비치는 고독함이 될 수도 있고 화사한 꽃 사이에서 비치는 밝은 세상과 보는 관객들의 다채로운 감정을 표현할 수 있다는 것이 보는 즐거움이다. 

거울 사이사이에 핀 꽃들의 배경은 화려함을 상징하기 위해 금빛의 배경이 주를 이룬다. 채색화 물감에 금분을 섞어 표현되는 금빛의 바탕은 마치 현실에서 볼 수 있는 꽃들이 아닌 작가 내면에 존재하는 새로운 세상에 담긴 꽃처럼 신비로움을 자아내고 있다. 실제의 꽃이지만 동시에 그로부터 벗어나 작가에 의해 새롭게 연출된 꽃이고 미적 대상인 이 표현력은 꽃의 내부와 외부를 채우는 점과 선의 규칙적인 배열을 이용해 한수민 작가 본인만의 꽃으로 승화시키고 있다. 아름답고 화려한 꽃과 여백, 구멍처럼 자리한 거울이 공존하고 있는 작품에서 나의 새로운 모습을 찾을 수 있고 현실과 비현실 사이에 비춰지는 현상에서 작가와 관객의 새로운 소통의 통로를 마련하고 있기도 했다.    

평면적 회화를 벗어나 입체적 아름다움을 담아내다

회화의 평면적 한계를 입체적 화면으로 보이게 표현하는 것은 단순한 작업이 아니다. 그렇듯 한수민 작가의 작품도 많은 작업시간과 창의적 표현이 수반되고 있다. 내면의 거울은 꽃과 꽃 사이에 보이는 하늘이 될 수도 있고 강이 될 수도 있다. 그만큼 비춰지는 장면에 따라 새로운 형태의 입체감을 주고 정지해 있는 공간이지만 거울 안에 비춰지는 시간은 실시간적인 요소로 동영상적인 움직임을 내포하고 있다. 그림이 부동의 것이고 정적이라면 거울에 비친 이미지는 유동적이며 찰나적이다. 그만큼 무엇이 담길지, 또 누군가가 담길지 전혀 가늠할 수 없는 신선함이 있으며, 관객들은 그 거울을 통해 자신의 현실을 볼 수 있고 그로 인해 작가와 완벽한 소통을 할 수 있을 것이라 생각된다.

꽃이 표현된 작품 외에 한 작가가 늘 표현했던 부분이 바로 여인의 모습이다. 아름다운 여성상을 표현한 그의 인물들은 아름다운 얼굴의 표현력과 화사한 패션으로 자리 잡고 있다. 이 여성상의 표현은 작가의 이상적인 포즈와 육체, 그리고 패션 감각을 지니고 있다. 마치 현실에서 행하지 못한 부분을 작품으로 하여금 담아내고 있는 것처럼 말이다. 또한 작품에서 여인들이 주시하는 곳은 우리 세상을 바라보는 듯했다. 그 시선은 마치 자신을 봐 달라고 세상에 외치는 느낌을 주고 있었다. 

아름다운을 표현하지만 여성의 표정은 기쁨과 화사함 속에 담겨있는 고독한 감정도 표현되고 있다. 이 감정들은 인간의 외면적 화려한 모습 안에 담겨 있는 우울함과 고독을 표현한 듯 보였다. 즉 인간은 비쳐지는 화려한 외면 속에 고독적인 측면이 있다는 것을 느끼게 해주는 부분이었다.    

자신의 작품에서 큰 의미를 담고 있는 거울의 출현은 평생 빠질 수 없다고 말하는 한수민 작가. 세상에 많은 거울이 존재하지만 한수민 작가의 작품에서 표현되는 거울은 우리의 감정과 세상의 모든 것들을 비추고 있었다.

Another Ego Reflected In Mirror

Art, when we usually say, has a magical power of changing the world. Some gain wisdom in life and others feel comfort through art. In this regard, art cannot be separable from our life. Particularly, painting is very creative area that brings us a varied feelings in our lives with the closest reach. Achieving the harmony of nonexistent material and creative work would be definitely a daunting task for artists to undertake. If they do it, it would make audience feel newness and uniqueness. PowerKorea interviewed painter Han Soomin, who utilizes mirror to arouse another ego inside the minds of audiences.  

Mirror And New World 

Mirror that we use everyday is a special material in Han’s paintings. It has been just a tool of looking at oneself. However, Han uses it as her unique and symbolic material. Through mirror, she expresses ideology of femininity, and beautiful and vivid flowers. The images are not static, rather, they can be felt in three dimensions. A mirror that reflects splendid and colorful flowers makes both active and passive effect of seeing them. Looking at flowers, audiences can have contradictory feelings : loneliness as well as hope through a brighter world.         

In order to express the splendor, the background behind the flowers is colored gold. This gold painting arouses mystique through flowers which seem to exist in a new world inside Han’s mind. The flowers actually exist, however, they were uniquely recreated by the painter with a technique of a regular arrangement of dots and lines. We can seek a self-ego through the painting filled with fancy flowers, blank space and mirror. In addition, this explored a new way of communication between the artist and audience. 

Infuse Three Dimensional Beauty  

It is not a simple task that overcomes of flat limitation of painting. Han’s paintings require many working times and creative expressions. The mirror inside can be a sky seen through flowers and even a river. From its perspectives, real-time factor include an animated movement. If a painting is immovable and static, images reflected through mirror is fluid and instant. Anyone cannot predict what would be expressed. Through mirror, audience can look at their own reality and achieve a perfect communication with the painter. 

Woman is another major material used by the artist. Figures expressed with femininity boats beautiful faces and fancy fashion. They are also equipped with an ideal pose, physics and a great sense of fashion even though they are not in the real world. Women in the paintings seemed to look at us. Their eyes appealed to the world to care about them. 

Their facial expressions also display loneliness hidden in joy and fanciness. Anyone feel lonely even if they seem live a splendid life. 

Han says she cannot say her work without mirror as it has significant meanings in her painting. Even though there are many kinds of mirror in the world, the mirror in Han’s paintings reflects all the feelings and things existing in this world.
