한국의 창의미술교육, 이 곳에서 거듭나다

창의미술교육기업 《아트피쉬》의 유진영 대표가 정의하는 ‘창의미술교육’은 학습자의 선택을 필수로 한다. 학습자가 선택한 주제와 방법으로 긍정적인 결과를 낼 수 있도록 충분한 경험과 기회를 제공하는 것이다. ‘물 만난 물고기’처럼 활기차고 자유롭게 생각을 유영하라는 유진영 대표의 교육철학과 소신이 담긴 아이들이 행복한 창작의 공간《ARTFISH》. 이제 한국을 너머 중국, 일본으로 수출되는 미술교육 콘텐츠로써 각광받고 있다.

학습자의 의지와 선택은 존중되어야 한다 

미술작가를 꿈꾸었던 유 대표가 《아트피쉬》를 설립한 것은 미술교육을 받는 과정에서 생긴 문제의식을 연구한 것에서 비롯되었다. 유 대표는 어려서부터 디즈니 명작과 신문 광고 삽입지를 모으며 이미지들을 머릿속에 캡쳐했다. 또 화가 파울클레와 호안미로의 그림에서 느껴지는 표정과 눈빛의 감흥, 선과 면의 재치있는 표현들이 좋아 이를 모티브로 학교 과제를 냈다. 그림을 관심있게 보고, 모으고, 버리는 작업이 거듭되면서 디자인의 구성과 감각이 저절로 터득되었다. 스스로 놀이 수업이 된 것이다. 하지만 미술입시학원을 다니면서 그 재미가 사라졌다. “주체가 저인데 제가 원하는 그림을 못 그리니까 즐겁지 않았어요. 그림을 왜 해야 하는지 그 이유와 의미가 사라졌죠.” 홍익대학교미술대학에 입학했지만 그 괴리감은 여전했다. 오히려 더 사람들의 평가와 시선을 의식하게 되면서 진정한 미술교육의 패러다임이 필요하다는 열망이 강해졌다. “좋아하는 그림을 자주적으로 선택할 수 있는 존재라는 걸 깨닫는 게 가장 중요해요. 선생님은 그 결정을 격려하고 목표를 유지하도록 이끌어 줘야죠.” 그래서 설립된 것이 창의미술교육원 《아트피쉬》다. 《아트피쉬》의 학습자는 생각을 표현하는 데 능숙하다. 자기 의지와 자기 선택에 의한 자율성 존중과 학습자와 교수자 간의 소통이 원활한 교육 환경을 강조하는 유 대표의 교육철학은 아이와 학부모 모두를 감동시켰다. 이와 같은 유 대표의 생각은 4세부터 고학년까지 각 시기별 성장에 따른 심리 변화와 인지 행동 발달의 변화를 체계적으로 제시하고 있다. 미술교육의 방법론을 정립하고, 현장 교육의 가치를 강조하는 <아트피쉬>는 한국 미술교육의 격을 한층 끌어 올렸다. “어떤 수업이건 학습자의 의지를 북돋아 스스로 선택하도록 하는 것이 필수 입니다. 수업의 교육 목적에 따라 재료와 주제의 선택이 적재적소로 이뤄집니다.” 학습자의 표현 능력을 기르기 위해서는 모든 표현 재료의 성질을 분석하고 이해하는 것이 선행되어야 한다. 첫째로 자연의 생태적인 습성을 탐구하는 경험, 둘째로 물질에 대한 성질의 이해, 셋째로 사회적인 경험이 그것이다. 다양한 경험이 수반되어야 다양하고 풍부한 스토리로 이어지기 때문이다. 

세상 모든 아이들과 미술로 통하는《아트피쉬》 

유 대표는 아이들의 사고력을 창의적으로 키우기 위해서는 미술교육이 핵심이라고 강조한다. “학부모들이 미술을 단순히 전공으로 보지 않았으면 좋겠어요. 미술로 표현을 잘한다는 것은 어떠한 사회 분야도 다 재주가 있다고 볼 수 있거든요.” 미술은 목적 설정이 분명하다. 그 설정에 도전하고 사고하여 노력을 통해 결과물을 내는 일련이 분명하기 때문에 창의성을 기르기 위한 핵심 교육으로써 가치가 있는 수업이다. 스스로 자아의 존재와 존중감을 인지하면서 사회적으로 갖추어야 할 인성적인 면모도 형성할 수 있는 진정한 ‘경험의 교육’이다. 특히 창의력이 폭발하는 5세~7세를 놓쳐서는 안된다. 특히 7세는 사회화 단계이기 때문에 자신의 생각보다는 남의 생각에 의존하는 경향이 있다. 심리적으로나 행동 발달에 따라 변화하는 시기에 적합한 표현의 기회와 표현의 과정을 경험토록 해야 한다. 유 대표는 “미술교육을 통한 창작 경험이 곧 문제 해결 능력을 기르는 것이기 때문에 이러한 부분을 학부모가 알아 줬으면 좋겠다.”고 거듭 강조한다. 학부모가 기회를 주지 않으면 아이들이 교육을 받을 수 없기 때문이다.

교육문화의 콘텐츠를 이루고, 그 콘텐츠를 수출하는 것이 목표라는 유 대표의 마인드 때문일까. 《아트피쉬》는 중국과 일본 등에서 많은 선생님들이 거쳐갔다. 이미 중국으로 정식 수출이 이뤄지면서 교류전도 해마다 진행되고 있다. “어떤 문화와 성격도 포용하고 적용할 수 있는 커리큘럼이기 때문에 콘텐츠가 수출됐다는 것만으로도 진정한 국제문화 교류가 되는 셈이죠.” 이제 《아트피쉬》는 중국과 일본으로 수출을 이룩한 미술교육 콘텐츠로써 우리나라를 대표하는 브랜드로 귀추가 주목되고 있다.  ◇02-598-6679 

Creative art education of Korea born again

‘Creative art education’ defined by President Yoo Jin-yeong of <Art Fish>, an enterprise of creative art education, requires the learner’s choice. With the theme and method chosen by the learner, they provide sufficient experience and opportunities. <Art Fish> is the place for children’s happy creation containing President’s Yoo’s educational philosophy and conviction for unfolding active and free thoughts like ‘a fish in the water.’ This item is in the limelight as art education content exported to China and Japan across the border. 

The learners’ will and choice should be respected. 

President Yoo, who had been a would-be artist, established <Art Fish> based on his research on a critical mind arising in the course of receiving art education. From child, President Yoo collected Disney masterpieces and inserted bills capturing their images in the head. He also liked the expression of faces and impressive eyes, witty lines and sides felt in the paintings by artists Paul Klee and Joan Miro and submitted his school assignments with this motif. With repeated job of looking at pictures in interest, collecting and discarding them, it taught him the composition and sense of design. It became a kind of play class for him. However, attending an art academy for entrance exam, he was forced to lose the fun. “I was the subject, so I was not pleased when I couldn’t draw pictures I wanted. I even lost the cause and meaning why I had to be engaged in painting.” Though he entered an art college of Hongik University, he still couldn’t get out of that odd feeling of alienation. Rather, as he became conscious of the people’s evaluation and eyes, it added his aspiration for a true paradigm of art education in need. “It matters most to realize oneself as a person who can choose the picture he likes independently. The teacher’s duty is to encourage that decision and guide a student to maintain his aim.” This idea brought into being the <Art Fish>, a creative art institute. <Art fish’s> learners are good at expressing their thoughts. Both children and parents were impressed by the educational philosophy of President Yoo, who emphasizes the respect of one’s will and autonomy by one’s choice and educational environment in smooth communication between learner and teacher. Based on this idea, president Yoo presents his own program following the change in psychological and developmental change of cognitive behavior by the growth of each period from age 4 to high grades. <Art Fish>, which establishes a methodology of art education and emphasizes the value of site education, has raised the status of Korea’s art education. “In any class it is essential to encourage the learner’s will and get him to make his own choice. Following the educational purpose of class, choice of material and subject matter is made for the right man in the right place.” Cultivating the learner’s expressive ability must be preceded by the analysis and understanding of the properties of all expressive materials. They are specifically, first, experience of inquiring into the nature’s ecological behavior, second, understanding of material properties, and third, social experience. It is because only diverse experiences involved can lead to diverse and rich stories. 

<Art Fish>, a passage to art for children in the world 

President Yoo emphasizes that art education is the core means for children to cultivate their thinking power creatively. “I want the student’s parents not to see art simply as another major. Good expression in art can mean being good at any field of society.” Art involves one’s definite course of establishing the purpose. Since it has a definite course of challenging that installation, thinking and producing results through endeavor, it is a class worth the essential education for cultivating creativity. While recognizing a child’s own existence and self-esteem, it is a true ‘education of experience’ by which a child can form his elements of character socially needed. Especially, you should not lose the time period of age five to seven when creativity shows explosive growth. At age seven, a phase of socialization, a child tends to depend on another’s thought rather than his own. At a period in psychological or behavioral development, you should provide a child with an opportunity of suitable expression and have him experience the process of expression. President Yoo emphasizes again, “I hope parents know that experience of creation through art education is the process of building problem solving.” It is because without opportunity given by parents, children cannot receive that education. President Yoo’s aim to build and then export contents of educational culture started to be answered when many teachers from China and Japan visited <Art Fish>. With formal export to China already done, there is an exchange exhibition held each year. “Considering that this is a comprehensive curriculum applicable to any culture and nature, export of contents itself may mean a true culture exchange in this international community.” Now being the content exported to China and Japan, it is drawing attention when in the near future <Art Fish> will stand as a brand representing Korea.
