대한민국이 낳은 이 시대의 거장
광화문 세종대왕상 등을 설치한 한국 최고의 조각가

조선의 역사상 과학, 경제, 국방, 예술, 문화 등 모든 분야에 걸쳐 찬란한 업적을 많이 남겨 위대한 성군(聖君)으로 존경받는 인물 세종대왕. 세종대왕이 창제한 훈민정음(訓民正音)은 오늘날 대한민국의 공식문자인 한글로 발전되어 사용되고 있다. 600년 전 고도 한양의 육조거리인 세종로 광화문에는 위대한 성군인 세종대왕 동상이 있다. 본지에서는 이 세종대왕 동상을 만들고 지난해 생존하는 이탈리아 최고의 조각가로 평가받고 있는 노벨로 피노티(Novello Finotti)와 이탈리아 파도바시에서 2인 전을 가진 한국이 낳은 이시대의 거장 김영원 조각가를 만나 그의 인생과 작품에 대해 들어보았다.
주물기술자와 협업하여 완벽히 제작한 세종대왕 동상
그동안 세종로 거리엔 세종대왕에 대한 이야기가 없었다. 몇해전 서울시가 세종로에 광화문 광장을 건설하면서 세종대왕 동상을 세우기로 하고, 온오프라인 시민의견을 수렴해서 여론조사 결과 후에 이순신 장군과 세종대왕 동상을 같이 설치 결정을 했다. 백성을 가장 아끼고 사랑했던 헌신적인 지도자, 시대의 선구자였던 세종대왕의 동상을 제작하기 위해 국내의 유명한 조각가 52명을 추천받아 1차 심사 후 5인이 선정되었고 접수된 공모 작품을 분야별로 전문가들이 모여 최종심사 후 결정했다. 김영원 교수의 작품은 결국 최종 선정이 되었고 2009년 10월 9일 세종로 광화문에 세종대왕 동상이 설치되었다. 동상은 40대 후반의 정렬적인 세종대왕의 모습을 담았다. 특히 온화한 미소에는 백성을 사랑하는 정신을 엿볼 수 있으며, 한손에 책을 들고 용좌에 앉아있는 왕의 모습은 한글을 바탕으로 한 수준 높은 정신을 표현하고 있다. 또한 김 교수의 공간에 대한 정확한 해석으로 보행자 위주의 동상이며 안전에 만전을 가한 완벽한 작품이다.
40년간 사실주의적 인체조각을 선보이며, 인간을 탐구해온 조각가
인체라는 일관된 소재를 가지고 사실주의적 작업해 온 김영원 교수는 한국 조각의 본질과 그 가치에 대한 재평가를 이끌어낸 조각가로 평가받는다. 그의 작품세계는 시대에 따라 조금씩 변화되었는데 70~80년대는 농경사회에서 산업사회로 넘어가는 과도기적인 시대에서 우울하고 참담했던 시대적 상황에 항거하기 위해, 비판적인 관점으로 중력, 무중력의 인체를 주제로 한 작품들이 만들어졌다. 90년대에는 사회가 양분화로 파편화 되가는 과정을 겪으면서, 스스로 해체하는 과정을 거쳐서 새로운 작품 세계를 펼쳐 나갔다. 해체하는 작업에서 몸과 마음이 지친 김영원 교수는 이후 기공 선(氣功 禪)을 만나 의식의 직접적인 표출을 통해 내 자신의 내면을 점검 하고 외부세계와 교감하기를 원했던 행위예술의 일종인 ‘조각-禪’ ‘드로잉-禪’을 개발하고, 1994년 상파울로 비엔날레를 비롯한 다수의 행위 예술제에서 퍼포먼스 형식으로 시연하고 그 결과물을 조각과 드로잉으로 남겼다. 2000년대에 들어서면서 우리사회는 IT시대로 문명사적 대전환이 이루어 졌고, 예술전반에 걸쳐서도 대 격변에 직면하였다. 이러한 혼란스러운 흐름을 지켜보면서 2000년대에 걸 맞는 조각언어를 선적인 체험을 통한 시각과 서양 문명이 가져온 현실 속에서 찾아보고자 했다. 경험과 관념, 현상과 본체의 상반된 세계에 대한 통합적 대안을 서술적으로 풀어 작품에 담고자 노력했다.
2013년 6월 이태리 ‘파도바’시에서 세계적인 거장인
노벨로 피노티(Novello Finotti)와 제55회 베니스비엔날레 2인전 열어.
노벨로 피노티는 ‘미켈란젤로의 예술적 장자’라 불리는 살아있는 거장이다. 피노티가 김 교수의 작품에 매료되어 2인전을 제안했고, 김 교수는 갈릴레이의 도시 파도바 시에 입성한 최초의 외국인 작가가 됐다. 전시는 ‘가장 영향력 있는 미술박람회’ 인 베니스비엔날레에 전시 됬고, 전시 후 폭발적인 반응을 불러와 파도바 시장의 초청으로 시청 광장과 시립 미술관, 공원 등에서 대규모 전시를 가졌다. 출품작 중 3m높이의 ‘그림자의 그림자(길 위에 앉다)’는 파도바시 오페라재단 중앙 광장에 영구소장 됐으며, 김영원과 피노티의 만남은 베니스비엔날레를 취재하러 온 한국의 SBS ‘미술만담’ 취재기자들에 의해 작년연말에 방영됐다.
김 교수는 인체사실조각을 통하여 세상과 소통하고자 했다. 또한 인체조각의 해부학적인 태생적 한계를 벗어나 걸림 없는 자유로운 이미지를 만들기 위해 인체 그 자체의 일부를 ‘사물화’시켜야만 했다. 음(陰)과 양(陽)이 공존하고, 유(有)와 무(無)가 뒤얽히고, 체(體)와 용(用)을 한 덩어리로 재조립해서 다채로운 이미지가 평면과 입체의 뒤섞임 속에 낯선 세계, 자가 복제에 의한 무한증식과, 자기 분열된 세계의 이미지들, 이는 어떻게 보면 가장 현실을 반영하는 이미지이자 동시에 가상적인 이미지이기도 하다. 이 이미지들이 실재와 부재의 경계를 넘나들며, 현실과 가상의 극점에서 위태롭게 유희하는 현대인간에 대한, 무한한 연민과 비판적인 시각의 은유적 담론이라 할 수 있다.
40여 년에 이르는 김 교수의 족적은 사실주의적 구상조각이라는 일관된 자세를 유지하면서시대의 변화에 끝없이 조우하여 인간의 내면적 변화와 근원적 원리를 찾고자 노력한 흔적이었다. 시대를 넘어선 안목과 리더쉽으로 위대함을 보여준 세종대왕을 가슴에 품고 살아온 김 교수는 타고난 재능과 인내로 뛰어난 작품들을 남기며 조각미술의 역사를 정립한 계간조각 창간, 학연·지연 없이 오로지 작품만으로 경쟁하는 서울국제조각페스타 개최 등 한국 조각의 국제화와 경쟁력 향상에 크게 이바지 했다. 후배들을 위해 희생하고 남에게 봉사해온 한국미술계의 아버지이자, 세계가 인정한 대한민국 최고의 조각가. 그의 이름은 김영원이다.

Korea's best sculptor who installed King Sejong's statue in Gwanghwamun

The respected figure, a good and wise Great King Sejong, in the history of the Joseon Dynasty who left a great many brilliant achievements across all areas such as in scientific, economic, military, art, and culture. The Hunminjeongeum Gtreat King Sejong created has developed into Hangul, today the official character of the Republic of Korea. There is a statue of Great King Sejong, a good and wise Great King in Gwanghwamun Sejong-ro, which was the capital city Hanyang, the Yook Jo Street 600 years ago. This magazine met a master in this era of, a sculptor Kim Yeongweon who Korea has produced and made Statue of the Great King Sejong. the sculptor Kim Yeongweon, who held two people exhibition in the Italian city of Padova with Novello Finotti last year being evaluated as the best sculptor still in existence and heard about his life and his works.

Meanwhile, there was no story of King Sejong on Sejongno street. A few years ago Seoul City decided to build a statue of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-shin statue, building Gwanghwamun Plaza on Sejongno street, and after feedback from online and offline civic poll. In order to make a statue of King Sejong who cherished and loved the people, the most dedicated leader and the most dedicated leader, 52 domestic famous sculptors were recommended, after first examination five sectors were selected. The received competition works were screened by experts by sectors and after the final examination it was decided. The work of Professor Kim Yeongwon eventually became the final selection and the Statue of the Great King Sejong was installed on October 9, 2009 in Gwanghwamun Sejongno.
The statue expressed the look of the passionate Great King Sejong in his late 40's.
In particular, a gentle smile reflects the spirit of loving people, the king's appearance sitting on the seat holding a book in one hand expressing the high-level spirit based on Hangul. With an accurate analysis of the space of professor Kim, the statue is especially for pedestrians and every effort is applied to the complete work of safety.
Sculptor having been exploring the human, serving the piece of realism of the body
for 40 years
Prefessor Kim Yeongwon who has been working on the realism with the consistent material of the human body, was evaluated as a sculptor who led to re-evaluation of the essence and value of the Korean sculpture. His works world has been changed slightly depending on the age, in the 70-80s which was passed from an agricultural society to industrial society in the transitional period his works were made in order to protest contemporary situation terribly depressed with the critical point of view and works were made on the subject of the human body of gravity and zero gravity. In the 1990's, suffering fragmentation process caused by bisection of the society, through the process of dismantling he spread out the new work world. Novello Finotti called' a master in existence as "Michelangelo's artistic son. Finotti is fascinated by the work of Kim and offered two people exhibition. Professor Kim became the first foreign artist who entered Padova, the city of Galileo. His exhibition was put on display in 'The most influential art fair', Venice Biennale exhibition. After the exhibition, it caused the explosive reaction he had a large display in City Hall Square, City Museum of Modern Art, Parks etc by the invitation of Padua city mayor. Of his works in the exhibition, Height of 3m "The shadow of a shadow (sit on the road)" was housed in Padua City Opera Foundation, the Central Square as the permanent collection. The meeting of Kim Yeongweon and Finotti aired at the end of the last year by the reporters of South Korea's SBS 'comic art' who came to cover the Venice Biennale. Through the human body of realistic sculpture, profossor Kim would communicate with the world. In addition, beyond the inherent limits of the anatomical on the human body's sculpture, and to make unobstructed and free images, he had to make human body itself into the things. Professor Kim embracing in his chest the Great King Sejong who demonstrated greatness with the insight and leadership beyond the era, has left outstanding works with his natural talent and patience and published quarterly sculpture which established the history of sculpture art, held the Seoul International Sculpture Festival in which we can compete only through the works without regionalism, school relations etc, ad so he has greatly contributed to improving the competitiveness and internationalization. He has been sacrificed for his juniors and served others, the father of Korea's art world and world-recognized Republic of Korea's best sculptor, his name is Kim Yeoungwon.
