Will achieve social integration through ¡®sharing meditation¡¯ starting from oneself

Beopchan, a Buddhist priest at Seongbul hermitage

Turning the modern society, religion has lost its large part performed in the past. With matter going in advance of mind by the influence of industrialization and capitalism, personal existence has been reduced to an accessory consumed by the large enterprise. Gradually, however, people started to realize that technological advance and material affluence do not always bring on happiness. Then, in many fields, the paradigm has changed into the concept of healing with the trend of an increasing number of people who are putting into practice the aesthetics of slowness and voluntary poverty. Especially, in the aftereffect of the global recession and incessant incidents and accidents, there is also an increasing demand for looking for the peace of mind and body through religion. At this time when the role of religion has become more important than ever before, we met Beopchan, a priest at <Seongbulam>, who has been constantly delving into the role and value of Buddhism in the modern society, to learn about the Buddhism evolving into a religion of everyday life.

Four kinds of emotions needed for a happy life: love, sympathy, joy and equality

¡®Seongbulam¡¯ founded in the 1970¡¯s by priest Woondam is located at the entrance of Mt. Gwanak, Daehak-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. It was the time without many Buddhist temples in downtown so Woodam laid the foundation on the foot of Mt. Gwanak, not deep in the mountains, to deliver Buddha¡¯s teachings to more people. Actually, here are apartments and a library in the vicinity so it is a low-threshold temple where not only ordinary Buddhists but also climbers, Shillim-dong students and anyone could stop and take a breath comfortably on their way. Since 2004, due to the health problem of priest Woondam, priest Beopchan, who had been working at Haein-sa temple, has been managing in charge of this place. Beopchan graduated from Haeinsa Buddhist College [Traditional School] and from Dongkuk University in three years studying Zen, Buddhism and Indian philosophy, completed his master¡¯s and doctor¡¯s course majoring in the dogmatic of Zen Buddhism. Then he served as Dongkuk Univ. Chunggakwon Buddhism Academy steering committeeman, Hwagyesa and Gilsangsa Buddhist College instructor in succession. After teaching students at Dongkuk Univ. as healing camp coach priest, he is currently training ¡®Sharing meditation¡¯ at BBS, a Buddhist broadcasting. ¡°Buddhism is the religion not for knowledge with the head but for practicing what one knows with the body. Seongbulam has been always making endeavors to become a religion for the masses sharing their laugh and pain. For the future, too, we promise to serve as a religion oriented toward practice in everyday life taking down all authority and seeking for the path of Buddhism.¡±

In the meantime, priest Beopchan has been devoted to spreading a new Buddhist method of meditation called ¡®Sharing meditation¡¯ as well as propagation of Buddhism. ¡®Sharing meditation¡¯ means the method of first looking for oneself through meditation and practicing its meaning by social and external expansion. The way to proceed is performing meditation with four kinds of mentality ? love, sympathy, joy and equality ? to recover one¡¯s heart. ¡°Sharing meditation starts with loving oneself. It is to realize the preciousness of one¡¯s family with a heart of dignifying one, and then embrace our neighbors and ultimately achieve a healthier society together.¡± You can be informed about everything of ¡®Sharing meditation¡¯ through Buddhist broadcast BBS on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.

<Zen friend> that has practiced ¡®love neighbors¡¯ in the spirit of Buddhism.

Priest Beopchan has been active in social service activities through ¡®Zen friend,¡¯ a community service meeting of ¡®Seongbulam.¡¯ ¡®Zen friend¡¯ is a group of practitioners composed of thirteen Buddhists, including a company president, college professor, ordinary person and student, who are seeking for social change through ascetic practices. The priest recently performed prayers several times by visiting Paengmok harbor at Jindo with members of ¡®Zen friend¡¯ participating in volunteer work. ¡°While reciting the Merciful Goddess¡¯ prayer 21 timers, I couldn¡¯t resist tears on my eyes for the whole of two hours. What is more worrying is the fact that the children¡¯s and parents¡¯ sorrow is being forgotten. But we are going to continue the prayer and religious service at Paengmok harbor until the last missing one returns home.¡± Priest Beopchan said he would raise donation for the bereaved sooner or later, asking to understand his will to share the pain of the times though it is just a material means. In the meantime, he is planning to build an ascetic hall where more people will be able to gather together for performing practice. By building a kindergarten on the side of Mt. Gwanak, he is planning to help children realize the value of nature that all being should get along in harmony, while increasing the quality of life for the elderly from nature¡¯s healing power by making a space for them. The ascetic hall is going to be divided into the spaces for practice, living and learning while aiming to increase the number on a national basis. ¡°Like a small change can go on changing the society, if I could change ten people with a heart of benevolence they will change a hundred people. And if the hundred can change a thousand, I am sure that the path to social integration is not far ahead of us.¡± Priest Beopchan stated clearly that, getting rid of all enmity and confrontations, we should share pain and joy together with a sense of equality for every man. It is hoped that as what he has been doing so far, he will be standing strong as a respectable religious man who takes care of the pain of this age and the ailing heart of the modern people.
