Hosting by Fashion Global of the International (FGI), Grand Prix awarded in fashion

Godfather of Korean solid pattern

Master Suh, Wan-Seuk

Master Suh, Wan-Seuk who started working at a boutique in Myungdong for the first time studied at Kukje Costume Aedemy and decided to be a tailor. Back then, he knew making beautiful dresses was important but also knew the importance of patterns would get much more crucial in this field by intuition. For 10 years, he worked as a tailor in Korea but desired to study for the pattern. Eventually, master Suh, Wan-Seuk went to Japan to study further. At that time, there was a famous pattern expert in Japan and he was sir. Karaki Isamu. He met him at Bantan Design Institute and there, he learned about a solid cutting. He often visited his atelier to help him and could be good at treating the solid pattern.

In 1984, he came back to Korea after studying in Japan and the first thing to do was establishing the solid pattern institute. The reason why he opened the school was because he wanted younger students who would like to learn that in the future not to need to go abroad for studying that in Korea without difficulties in the overseas. That was a start and it has been 30 years so far. Now, he has trained about 2,000 students and developed his pattern institute in the same place in Myungdong. Currently, his students are working everywhere of pattern teams and developing teams in big fashion companies, Korea

¡°When I came back to Korea and got a job but it was pretty rare for companies to use the solid pattern as I figured out. Not many people knew about the solid pattern in understandings. Also, it was time for the mass production of various kinds, so there was no company into that solid pattern. After all, I made the solid pattern institute on my own and produced by offers when necessary. I wasn¡¯t lazy to teach students at all, because I thought education was only chance to broaden the solid patter system.¡± However, he has a philosophy. It is that he doesn¡¯t teach many students at once. He thought the one-to-one education system should be set to teach professionally for a perfect training. Therefore, he put the national fashion development rather than money first. On the other hand, he was selected as a master of Korea in the costume department in 2004. Besides, master Suh, Wan-Seuk got awarded the grand prix from a ceremony hosted by FGI¡¯s Korean office. As for FGI, it has the worldwide reputation.

This organization has 43 branches internationally over the world and Korean best designers are working for them. And, Korean branch recognized master Suh, Wan-Seuk¡¯s ability and his contribution for the Korean fashion industry, so they awarded a person who is a modelist for the first time. From now on, he showed his aim to develop the patter specialist (modelist) more than now, but he said it is not easy to train at all because that kind of person is considered just as a technician. However, he emphasized people need to realize the pattern part is so important to create some unique, creative and comfortable clothes, since the pattern cannot be omitted out.

He is..

Master Suh, Wan-Seuk is a person who was the first Korean modelist (i.e. solid pattern specialist) from studying in Japan and got the master title from the government in 2004. He is called to be an exclusive person in Korea and he got awarded from the Human Resources Development Service of Korea, Korea Fashion Association and FGI etc. Also, he improved Korean pattern industry as much as his published books are used as textbooks for students who are the solid pattern, since he wrote many professional books about patterns from 1994 to 2010. Currently, he is teaching at the graduate school of Sejong University as an adjunct professor and trying to make it more popular of solid pattern and training students by his solid pattern institute.
