자본주의 미덕 속에 뭐든지 간편하고 빠르게 소모되는 것들이 각광받기 시작했고, 자본은 어느덧 자연과 인간 그 위에 군림해왔다. 그러는 사이 숲은 사라지고, 수많은 동식물이 멸종했으며 지구는 날이 갈수록 뜨거워졌다. 그 여파는 고스란히 지구온난화로 인한 이상기온현상과 황사, 미세먼지 등으로 이어져 인간들을 병들게 하거나 죽게 만들었다. 그럼에도 인간들은 걷잡을 수 없는 자연파괴현상을 또다시 자본을 활용한 과학기술에만 의존하려고 한다. 신실한 기독교인인 윤경 작가에게는 하나님이 인간에게 허락하신 자연을 인간 스스로 파괴하는 일련의 현상들이 더욱 위태롭게 다가온다. 그것이 그녀가 작품을 통해 자신이 가장 잘하는 방법으로 ‘생명경시풍조’를 꼬집고 있는 이유다. 

자연을 주제로 6월 25일 첫 개인전 개최

긴 공백의 시간을 깨고 윤경 작가가 드디어 첫 개인전을 연다. 결혼과 경제적인 이유로 작품 활동을 중단했던 그녀는 적지 않은 나이에 다시 학교에 진학하여 26년 만에 다시 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 만학도로 학업을 이어나가는 것이 쉽지만은 않았지만 그림을 시작한지 1년 만에 개인전을 열게 될 정도로 열정을 쏟아온 시간들이었다. 이전에는 기하학적인 추상작품을 주로 작업한 그녀였지만 26년이라는 세월의 유속을 이겨내는 동안 작품 세계도 크게 달라진 모습이다. “새로운 출발에 앞서 어떤 작품을 만들 것인가에 대해 고민을 많이 하게 됐죠. 그때 주부이자 엄마의 마음으로 가장 마음이 가던 주제가 바로 만연한 자연파괴와 생명경시에 대한 현상이었어요. 요즘 환경문제가 굉장한 이슈인데, 저는 작가로서 생명마저 일회용으로 쓰고 버려지는 현실을 일반인들에게 상기시켜야한다는 의무감을 느꼈던 것 같아요.” 

윤 작가는 특히 나무에 대한 남다른 애착이 있었는데, 커다란 나무가 나무젓가락으로 만들어져 한번 쓰이고 버려지는 일회용품으로 전락하는 것을 매우 안타깝게 생각했다. 죽어버린 나무에게 새로운 생명을 불어넣어주고 싶다는 생각으로 나무젓가락을 이용한 작품을 구상하기 시작했다. 나무를 모티브로 한 작품들은 이미 조각나고 버려진 죽은 나무를 하나의 새로운 나무로 재탄생시키는 과정을 거쳤으나, 언뜻 보아서는 재료가 나무젓가락이라는 것을 모를 정도로 수려한 아름다움을 내제하고 있다. 윤 작가는 전형적으로 나무를 형상화하는데 그치지 않고, 목재의 부산물들, 즉 톱밥이나 대패밥, 숯 등의 재료를 서로 붙이거나 갈아내는 과정을 통해 변형하여 조형미를 달리하기도 했다. 특히 <하늘나무>라는 작품은 큰 나무를 태워 만들어져서 종국에는 재가 되어 버리는 숯을 이용해 여러 번 채색하고, 그라인더를 이용해 수차례 갈고 또 가는 복잡한 과정을 거쳐서 완성시켰다. “워낙 거칠고 힘든 작업이라 포기하고 싶은 순간도 많았죠. 하지만 나무를 조각처럼 갈다보면 생각지도 못했던 형상들이 나오기 때문에 상당히 매력적인 작업이기도 했습니다.” 윤 작가는 자신도 최종적으로는 어떤 작품이 나올지 미처 알지 못한 채 작업을 이어나가는데, 마치 하나님께서 인간을 창조하신 것과 같은 기대감으로 매순간 작업에 임하고 있다고 전했다. 

작품 세계와 일치된 삶을 살아가다

윤 작가는 자신의 작품에 ‘인생도 한번 살아버리면 그것으로 끝나는 일회용이지만, 생명은 그 자체만으로 충분히 가치 있다’는 메시지도 중첩시켰다. 그녀가 유독 나무를 보면 가슴이 아픈 이유도 나무의 탄생과 소멸의 단계가 인간의 삶과 매우 닮아있기 때문이었다. “저희 집 앞에 벚나무 있었는데 사람들이 지나다는데 불편하다고 큰 가지를 뚝 잘라버린 일이 있었어요. 잘리고 나서 비실거리는 모습을 보면서 무자비하게 나무를 전지한 인간도 결국엔 작은 상처에도 괴로워하는 존재일 뿐이라는 생각이 들더군요. 또 상처로 인해 누군가는 죽을 수도 있어요. 저는 자연과 인간 모두를 상처로부터 회복시켜주고, 모든 죽어가는 것들에게 새로운 생명력을 불어 넣어줄 수 있는 작품을 만들어가고 싶어요.” 

윤 작가는 작품을 통해 대중들을 일깨우기에 앞서 자신이 실제로 철저하게 친환경적인 삶을 살아가려고 실천한다. 환경에 꾸준히 관심을 가지며 분리수거도 꼼꼼히 하고, 음식물 쓰레기를 만들지 않기 위해 노력하고 있기도 하다. 더불어 자녀들에게도 생활 속에서 자연스럽게 환경 교육을 실시하고 있다. “작품세계와 자신의 삶이 데칼코마니처럼 닮은 한 교수님을 보면서 배운 것들이 많아요. 앞으로는 저도 그 분처럼 제 삶부터 뒤돌아보며 대중들에게 작품을 통해 우리가 살아가는 자연을 아끼고 모든 살아있는 생명들을 사랑해달라는 메시지를 전달하고 싶어요.” 번제 드리듯이 녹여내고 태워내는 과정을 통해 늘 기도하는 마음으로 작품을 완성해 나가는 윤경 작가. 그녀와의 시간은 이 시대의 부재했던 예술정신과 작가정신이 과연 무엇이었는지에 대해 알게 된 소중한 순간으로 기억될 것이다.

The first solo exhibition on June 25 on the subject of nature 

Artist Yun Gyeong will open her first solo exhibition, finally breaking her long space of time.
