노안나오페라단 / 노안나 단장(Noh, An-na)

개성 있는 클래식 공연으로 대중에게 먼저 다가설 것

최근 클래식 전반의 대한 인식이 높아지고 있는 분위기다. 음악예술재단을 배경으로 하는 드라마 ‘밀회’는 클래식 음악을 전면에 내세워 전체 플롯을 이끌어가고 배우들의 감정선을 따라가며 큰 호응을 이끌어 냈다. 클래식을 소재로 한 웹툰 ‘마에스트로’도 만화팬과 클래식팬 양쪽 모두에게 열광적인 지지를 받고 있다. 또한 지난해 7월 개설된 페이스북의 ‘클래식에 미치다’는 회원수 10만 명을 넘겨 일반인들의 클래식 사랑을 입증해 보였다. 모두 기존의 권위를 내려놓고 끊임없이 클래식과 대중의 만남을 주선한 노안나오페라단의 노안나 단장과 같은 선각자들의 노력이 있어 가능한 일이었다.   

제목, 연주자, 역사, 스토리 알려하지 말고 무조건 들어라

특유의 당당함, 실력으로 클래식 대중화에 앞장서 온 노안나 단장은 어려서부터 어머니는 무용을 전공했고, 성당에서 소프라노 솔리스트로 활동했으며, 이모와 사촌들도 유명한 피아니스트 집안이었기 때문에 자연스럽게 집에서 피아노를 연주하고, FM 라디오 93.1에서 흘러나오는 선율에 빠져드는 것이 행복했다고 회상한다. 중학생이 되어서야 그것이 클래식방송이라는 것을 알았고, 고등학교에 올라가서야 제목과 연주자를 찾아보게 되었지만 그것이 무엇이든 느끼는 그대로가 좋았다. 시간만나면 집 근처 KBS홀을 찾아 KBS 교향악단의 공연을 관람하며 클래식이 주는 황홀함에 심취했다. 그렇게 편견 없이 일상 속에서 클래식 음악을 습득했던 시간들이 ‘노안나오페라단’의 수장이 된 지금의 그녀에게도 가장 큰 힘이 되어주고 있다. “클래식은 가까운 곳에 있어요. 우리는 이미 어렸을 때 피아노 학원에서 혹은 영화와 드라마, 광고 속에서 끊임없이 클래식을 접하고 있잖아요. 그냥 무조건 들으세요. 클래식이 갖는 장엄한 역사와 방대한 스토리, 어려운 제목과 수많은 연주자들의 이름을 일일이 다 알 필요는 없으니까요.” 

자연스럽게 클래식을 전공하며 피아노와 플루트를 복수 전공한 노 단장은 러시아에서의 연주 여행에서 일생일대의 커다란 전환점을 맞는다. “하루 종일 연주해야 할 피아노곡이 아니라 좋아하는 푸치니의 오페라 아리아를 버릇처럼 흥얼거렸나 봐요. 그것을 유심히 지켜본 오페라 음악 코치가 목소리가 좋으니 성악을 하는 것이 어떠냐고 권유를 했고, 첫 발성레슨에서 셋째 옥타브 C, D, E까지 시원스럽게 나와 선생님이 꾀꼬리라는 별명을 지어줬습니다. 그것이 시작이었죠.” 늦은 출발이었지만 멀지않은 시간에 그녀는 성악의 본고장이라 할 수 있는 이탈리아의 ‘크리스티아노 라볼아토리재단’으로부터 아시아 최초로 ‘아름다운 목소리상’을 수여받는 영광을 누리게 되었다.

색깔 있는 오페라 공연으로 대중의 공감 이끌어내다 

노 단장은 긍정적이고 외향적인 성격 탓에 대중들이 클래식을 외면한다고 앉아서 현실을 개탄할 수만은 없었다. 그녀는 음악, 문학, 역사, 연기가 집약된 종합예술인 오페라라면 승산이 있다고 보고 2008년에 자신의 이름을 걸고 ‘노안나오페라단’을 창단하기에 이른다. “개성 있는 공연으로 작은 오페라부터 관객들에게 소개하자고 계획했죠. 프로젝트마다 국내 최고의 교수님들이 참여하여 격을 높이고 있고, 젊은 연출가들이 독창적인 아이디어로 새로운 컬러를 입히고 있습니다.” 주변의 우려와는 달리 매 공연마다 관객들은 자리를 가득 채우며 ‘노안나오페라단’에게 뜨거운 반응으로 환호를 보내고 있다. 연주자에서 성악가로 다시 오페라단의 단장이자 예술감독으로 변신하는 것이 쉽지만은 않았지만 그녀는 100명이 넘는 예술가와 스텝들을 진두지휘하며 한편의 공연을 완성해내는 일련의 과정들이 즐겁기만 하다. 학생시절부터 친구들을 부추겨 공연이 없으면 스스로 기획하고, 여건이 안 되면 하우스 공연이라도 열어야 직성이 풀렸던 그녀에게 이 일은 천직이나 다름없다. 올 초에는 성악과 교수님들과 뜻을 모아 김덕기 지휘자와 김정덕 음악감독, 프라임오케스트라의 연주로 ‘사랑’이라는 제목의 가곡 음반을 발매하기도 했다. 대한민국 국민들이 가장 사랑하는 가곡 13곡을 엄선한 이 앨범은 클래식 앨범으로는 드물게 대중적인 인기를 누리고 있다. 노 단장은 향후 ‘사랑’ 앨범을 더 적극적으로 홍보하며, 가을에 세종문화예술회관에서 있을 오페라 갈라 공연과 겨울에 있을 송년음악회를 계획하고 있으며, 2015년 비밀프로젝트는 깜짝 발표할 예정이다. 

미래의 음악 영재는 만들어 지는 것 

현재 ‘노안나오페라 아카데미’를 운영 중인 노 단장은 클래식의 발전과 대중화를 위해서는 무엇보다 교육이 우선되어져야 한다고 강조한다. “영재는 만들어지는 거죠. 음악에 관심 있는 아이들을 눈여겨보고 전공자로서 체계적인 교육으로 그 아이들을 인도해야 합니다. 또한 전공자가 되고 유학을 가고 다시 돌아와 국내 클래식계에서 제대로 뿌리 내릴 수 있도록 지속적인 관리가 뒷받침되어야만 합니다.” 노안나 오페라단 음악영재ACADEMY는 엄선된 커리큘럼으로 성악, 피아노, 플루트, 관현악, 작곡, 실용음악을 교육하고 있으며, 유학에 대한 가이드와 매니저 역할까지도 수행하고 있다. 전공을 마친 학생들에게는 오페라단에서 스텝 혹은 단역부터 활동할 수 있도록 지원하여 실전 무대 경험을 쌓도록 돕는다. 또한 차기 한국의 클래식 영재를 키워나간다는 방침으로 자체 교재를 개발하여 4세 어린이부터 집중적으로 교육하고 있으며, 클래식의 관심이 많은 성인들을 위한 클래스도 마련하고 있다. 해외 일정이 많은 노 단장은 문화가 바로선 나라의 국민들은 어디에서도 대우받는다는 것을 피부로 느낀다. 특히 클래식의 힘은 그 무엇보다 유대하다. “클래식은 더 이상 클래식이 아니라 국가의 번성도 이끌 수 있는 엄연한 문화입니다. 기업과 국가 차원에서 클래식의 대한 지속적인 관심으로 아낌없이 투자하고 후원해주시길 기대합니다.” 기존의 것을 답습하는 것으로는 발전이 있을 수 없다고 말하는 노안나 단장, 그녀의 용감무쌍한 행보에 박수를 보낸다.

Will approach the public first with individualized classical performances! 

Lately, it feels like the recognition and the interest of everything about the classics is increasing more. TV drama <A Secret of Love Affair> with a background of the music art foundation is leading the entire plot by standing on the classical music in the front and it is popular for people to watch. In case of a WEBTOON, ‘Maestro’ talking about the classics, it is getting an enthusiastic support by both cartoon fans and classical music fans. Also, a facebook community, ‘Crazy about the Classics’, opened in last July has now over 100,000 members, so it was proved there are so many people who love the music. It was actually able to be possible to have some efforts of pioneers like Noh, An-Na of ‘Noh, An-Na Opera Company’ that had been trying to meet the public by dropping the stereotype of authority constantly. 

Listen unconditionally without knowing title, player, history, and story

Director Noh, An-Na who has been leading to make the classical music’s popularity with her characteristic gut and capability was naturally studying for playing the piano when she was small, as her mother studied for dancing and sang songs as a soloist at the church and even her aunts and cousins were all famous pianists. After all, she was bred in an arty environment since she was a little girl and she was happy to listen to music over the classical music radio, FM Radio 93.1. When she went to the middle school, she knew it was a classical music program and started finding out who is the musician and what the song was, but basically, she just like what she felt itself. Whenever she was free, she went to KBS Hall, which was close to her house and appreciated many times of performances of KBS Orchestra. She was so fascinated by the music. Like that, she was into the classical music in her ordinary life and spent so much time with that. That kind of memory is becoming the biggest comfort for her now, when she is working as a leader of ‘Noh, An-Na Opera Company’. “Classical music is very close to us. We are already learning how to play the piano at the institute or listening to many classical songs from movies, dramas and commercial advertisement on TV. Just listen to them. It is not really necessary to know plenty of player’s names and titles precisely.” Due to her surroundings, naturally, she majored in classics and learned about playing the piano and the flute dually, at the same time. Later then, director Noh had a turning point in her life while having a performance tour in Russia. “I think I was humming arias of Puccini’s operas who I love, instead of practicing playing the piano all day, which I was supposed to do. And there was an opera music coach who listened to me carefully and asked me to give a try to sing. At the first voice lesson, my teacher gave me a nickname as a nightingale because I sang up to C,D, and E of the third octave. It was the start.” Generally, it was quite a late beginning but she showed her talent in Italy where the opera was born and got awarded ‘Most Beautiful Voice’ from Cristiano La Volatori Foundation, which was the first time as an Asian opera singer. 

Taking out of the sympathy of the public with an unique opera performance 

Director Noh thought of an opera could be successful since it is condensed with music, culture, history and acting as a total art and she established ‘Noh, An-Na Opera Company’ by using her name in 2008. “I planned to start showing from small but individualized opera to the audience first. Every project is created by best professors to raise the level of quality and I let young directors make something new with their new ideas on that.” There were some worries about her business but, each performance made a good success and people came to see her works. They are sending the acclamation by amazing reactions to ‘Noh, An-Na Opera Company’. Actually, it was not easy to change from a player to an opera singer and also, it was even harder from that to a director of Opera Company and art director. However, she is enjoying the process with a pleasure by directing over 100 of artists and staff so as to finish the opera performance. In the early this year, she released a collection album of songs, <Love> that is played by Prime Orchestra conducted by Kim, Deok-Gi and art director Kim, Jeong-Deok with professors of vocal music by putting their willingness. This decent collection has 13 songs that are most of Koreans favorites and very unusually, this album became a hit as a classical album. Director Noh will promote the album, <Love> afterwards more and will have a plan to open the opera gala show in autumn and the year-end music concert in winter at Sejong Art Center. Besides, she is going to announce a secret project of 2015 surprisingly later. 

Musical gifted children are to be made 

Currently, director Noh runs <Noh, An-Na Academy> and she emphasizes that the education is the first thing to do for the classical development and popularity, most of all. “The gifted children are made. As an expert, people like me must watch the children who are interested in the classics and lead them to a systematic educational program. And, it has keep supporting them and helping to settle down in the classical field after they come back from the overseas studies and being a professional.” Gifted kids ACADEMY of ‘Noh, An-Na Opera Company’ has a selective curriculum for vocal, piano, flute, orchestral music, composing and practical music lessons and guide students for studying overseas and doing the management for them too. Moreover, they have their own textbooks by the line of raising Korean classical gifted kids, so they are teaching intensively children who are from 4. Separately, there is a class for the gown-ups who are interested in the classical music a lot. Director Noh who has lots of schedules in the overseas absolutely feels that people in a country that has a strong culture in their minds are treated pretty well anywhere in the world. Especially, the power of classic music is so powerful more than we think. “The classical music is not only the classical music, but also the culture that can lead to prosperity of a country. I hope many companies and the government would be constantly interested in doing something for that and investing more than now on the classics.” Director Noh, An-Na is a person who is saying that there is no improvement if we do take the footage of the past. By that, we clap our hands for her brave steps forward to the future.
