‘자생풍수’를 통한 풍수학의 중요성 후대에 잘 전하고파

흔히들 풍수(風水)를 비논리적이고 비합리적인 영역이라 여기고, 동양의 미신 정도로 치부하기도 한다. 이런 편협하고 지엽적인 풍수를 바라보는 시각이 안타까워 풍수학의 우수성과 과학성을 널리 알리고자 ‘한국풍수선양재단’을 발족, 다방면에서 활동을 펼치고 있는 한국풍수선양재단 성제 곽정진 이사장을 만나봤다.

글로벌 시대 ‘풍수’의 올바른 이해 필요

“가까운 미래의 한국은 복합문화산업단지, 최첨단 의학기술, 관광산업을 핵심으로 세계의 중심에 우뚝 설 것이다. 그 바탕이자 조언자가 곧 풍수”라 단언하는 한국풍수선양재단 성제 곽정진 이사장. 무려 18년간 우봉스님께 풍수학을 사사 받고 40년 넘게 한 우물을 판 그의 혜안과 통찰력이 느껴진다. 그의 향후 행보에 주목할 수 밖에 없는 까닭이다. 그는 “현재 동양에서의 ‘풍수지리학’은 주어진 환경을 선택적으로 이용하여 인간 삶의 질을 극대화시키고자 하는 지구물리학의 한 분야”라며 글로벌 시대인 현재의 ‘풍수’에 대한 정의를 내렸다. 곽 이사장의 말처럼 최근 풍수는 그 범위와 영역을 넓혀가며 의학, 지리학, 환경지리학, 상업지리학 등 무려 20여 분야로 세분화되어 연구되고 있는 명실공히 과학의 한 대세다. 또한 유럽과 미국에서도 한해 풍수에 관한 수많은 책이 발간되고 있으며 300개 이상의 연구소에서 이에 관한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 특히 러시아에서 활발한 연구가 진행되고 있다니 이채롭다. 이에 대해 곽 이사장은 “풍수는 인류가 지구상에 살기 시작한 이후부터 태동하여 수천 년 긴 시간을 거치면서 조상들이 온몸으로 몸소 체험하고 터득하여 인간에게 이로운 자연환경을 종합, 집대성 해놓은 과학적 통계학이라고 할 수 있다”라며 우리의 생활 전반에 풍수가 있다고 해도 과언이 아니라고 강조했다.

‘인간됨’을 중요시 여기는 우봉 손창옥 선생의 가르침 

대학에서 불교를 전공한 곽정진 이사장은 스승인 우봉 손창옥 선생을 만나 18년간 풍수학에 관한 깊은 조예를 쌓으며, ‘인간됨’을 중요시 하라는 가르침을 가장 단단히 배웠다.

풍수란 장풍득수(藏風得水)의 줄임말로, 예부터 명당은 물을 얻을 수 있는 곳을 뜻했고 풍수에서 물(水)은 재물(돈)을 뜻하며, 길은 물길과 같다고 해석한다. 따라서 물과 길은 곧 돈이다. 특히 건물이나 집 자리를 논하는 양택풍수의 경우, 현대 건축학과 만나 이른바 ‘돈이 되는’ 이론이 된다. 그런데 도시든 시골이든 돈이 몰리는 곳은 늘 문제를 낳기에 곽 이사장 또한 스승의 가르침을 항상 가슴에 담고 실천 중이다. 실제로 지난 2009~2013년 우리나라 최초로 조성된 문화복합산업단지인 ㈜KD POWER의 춘천 카이로스 단지의 숲속 터 22만평에 대해 부지선정 단계부터 설계 및 배치 부분까지 3번을 변경하며 세세히 관여하는 정성을 들였음에도, 준공식에서 받은 감사패에 만족하는 마음이 진정 큰 인물이다. 22만평의 카이로스 단지는 야외음악당과 미술관 등 문화복합공간을 산업단지와 함께 조성하였고 팔선의 미적 감각을 살린 담장 설계 등 그의 풍수·인문학·동양학적 철학이 오롯이 담겨있다. 

‘자생풍수’가 앞으로의 갈 길

전 육군참모총장 사택의 수맥문제 해결을 비롯해 5군단 8사단 등 군관련 산업에도 일조를 담당하였고, 경제계 인사들과도 긴밀한 협력관계를 유지하고 있는 곽 이사장은 리더의 앉은 자리가 편하지 못할 때 그 휘하의 조직체들도 어김없이 크고 작은 안 좋은 일들이 생긴다며 풍수학의 중요성을 재차 강조했다. 각 부문의 리더들이 사옥을 새로 건립할 때, 대학교 터를 옮길 때, 회사 내 중요한 프로젝트를 구상하는 집무실을 꾸밀 때…. 그 중요한 순간순간 찾아와 자문을 구하는 사람이 바로  곽 이사장이다. 그는 바쁜 와중에도 『옥수진경』, 『회중풍수요집』, 『신풍수론』, 『수맥과 풍수인테리어』 등 네 권의 책을 펴냈다. 그 중 『회중풍수요집』은 품에 넣고 다니며, 읽고 공부하길 바라는 마음에 쓴 책이라며 풍수학에 대한 쉽고 올바른 이해를 위한 책이라고 소개했다. 

곽 이사장은 천년이 넘는 한국풍수의 역사 속에서 자장율사와 의상대사, 원효대사의 ‘자생풍수’가 앞으로의 갈 길이라며 “예로부터 명당 중에서도 가장 높게 평가하는 명당은 비룡상천형(飛龍上天形) 명당으로 그 중에서도 용(龍), 봉(鳳), 구(龜), 록(鹿)의 사격(砂格)이 갖춰진 명당을 천하제일 명당으로 꼽았다. 그런 명당을 잘 찾고, 그로 인한 과정을 통해 선인들의 생각을 따라갈 수 있다. 의상대사는 화엄 10찰을 잡았고, 원효대사는 여수 향일암 터를 잡았다. ‘자생풍수’에 있어 이 어른들의 가르침은 매우 컸다. 도선국사의 경우 부족한 땅의 기운을 찾아서 보완하는 비보(裨補)풍수의 대가였으나 자연 그대로의 모습을 지닐 수 없어 현재는 없어진 터가 상당히 많다. 자연은 한번 파괴되면 100% 되돌릴 수 없다. 따라서 주위의 환경을 변형시키지 않고 있는 그대로 잘 적용하는 것이 가장 중요하다. 우리는 이러한 어른들의 사상을 물려받아 ‘자생풍수’를 올바로 계승·발전시켜 나가야 한다”고 말했다. 풍수를 알아가다 보면 자연에 잘 맞춘 우리 조상들의 지혜도 엿볼 수 있게 된다는 곽 이사장. 그는 “자연에 순응하면 몸과 마음이 편안해지는데 생명순환의 법칙이 곧 자연이요, 자연은 우리들의 스승이기 때문이다. 명당의 발견과 발복 모두 아는 것만으로 되지 않고 하늘의 뜻”이라는 그의 마지막 말은 우리 모두가 가슴 깊이 음미하고 성찰해 볼 일이다. 

Want to hand down the importance of geomancy to posterity through ‘autogenous feng-shui’

Needs to understand ‘Feng shui’ properly in the age of global village 

“In the near future, Korea will firmly stand in the center of the world with multi-culture industrial complex, high-tech medical technology and tourism. Feng shui can be its basis and reliable advisor,” is the asseveration made by Kwak Jung-jin (Seongje), president of Korea Feng shui Enhancement Foundation. Including 18 years’ study of geomancy under Monk Woobong, he has been devoted to this field for over 40 years and known for his clairvoyance and penetration attracting attention to his movements for the future. His definition of ‘Feng shui’ in the Orient now is “a field of geophysics to maximize the human’s quality of life using the given environment selectively.’ As president Kwak said, recently Feng shui has a broader scope and realm into about 20 divisions including medicine, geography, environmental geography, commercial geography, etc. under research as an established system of science.      

Besides, even in Europe and the US, numerous books on Feng shui are annually published and over 300 research institutes are engaging in the study of this field. Alarmingly, according to him, active research is going on in Russia. Regarding this, president Kwak emphasized that Feng shui is actually ruling over the whole aspect of our life saying, “Feng shui is a scientific statistics of making a comprehensive survey of natural environment beneficial to humans by our ancestors’ personal experience and understanding for thousands of years since the human kind started to live on earth.” 

Woobong’s teachings of stressing humanity 

President Kwak Jung-jin who had majored in Buddhism at college took lessons from his teacher Woobong (Son Chang-ok) for 18 years with deep attainments on geomancy in special emphasis on being ‘humane’ all the time. In Feng shui, an abbreviation for Jang Feng Deuk Shui (meaning ‘to hide wind and obtain water’), and since ancient times a propitious site for a grave has been interpreted as a place to get water, which means property (money), and path as waterway. Thus, both water and path mean money. Especially, in case of Feng shui specifically dealing with a building or housing site, this combines with the modern architecture to become a ‘money-making’ theory. However, money is the hotbed of irregularities no matter where it is in a city or the country, so President Kwak is bearing in his mind what his teacher emphasized in his extended time of teachings. From 2009 through 2013, he elaborately engaged in the project of 220,000-Pyeong site in the forest for Chunchon Kairos complex of KD Power Inc. from the stage of selection, planning and even to disposition with three times of change, but was generous enough to be satisfied with a single plaque of thanks he received at the ceremony for the completion. This Kairos complex was made up in combining industrial complex with multiplex space such as open-air music hall, art museum, etc. fully containing his humanistic and Oriental Feng shui spirit in designing the fence expressed by aesthetic sense of eight lines, etc.

‘Autogenous ‘Feng Shui’ is the right direction to move on. 

President Kwak resolved the problem of water vein of the former Army Chief of Staff’s home, helped army-related industry for the 5^th corps and 8^th division, and is keeping a close partnership with persons of economic circles. He accentuated again the importance of geomancy because when a leader is taking an uncomfortable seat, organizations under him never fail to have big or small bad news. So leaders in each sector is visiting President Kwak to take advice at every important moment from building a new company building to moving the site of a university and decoration of an office for conceiving an important project of a company. In his busy schedule, he wrote four books - <Oksoojingyung> <Compendium of feng shui for an audience> <New theory of feng shui> and <Water vein and feng shui interior>. Of them, he explained that <Compendium of feng shui for an audience> is a handbook for easy and right understanding of geomancy.                                      

Saying that our direction is ‘autogenous Feng shui’ elucidated by Jajang, Euisang and Wonhyo great Buddhist priests in the history of Korean Fen shui over a thousand years, he added. “From ancient times, the most propitious site for a grave is the one with a shape of a dragon soraing up into the sky, of which the best of the best is the one that has four aspects - dragon, phoenix, turtle and deer. We can catch up with the thoughts of our forerunners by finding such propitious sites of grave and experiencing the related process. Saint Euisang set sites for ten Hwaum Buddhist temples while Saint Wonhyo set the site for Hyangil hermitage in Yeosoo. Teachings of these masters really have had a great influence in ‘autogenous Feng shui.’ In case of Dosun prominent priest, he was a master at repair Feng shui for finding and supplementing the short earth energy but has lost a considerable amount of sites because they can’t hold the nature in the raw. Nature cannot be restored one hundred percent if destroyed once. So it matters most to apply Feng shui as things are in nature without transforming the surrounding environment. We should succeed to and develop ‘autogenous Feng shui’ in the right way inheriting the ideas of these great masters.’

President Kwak says that learning and studying Feng shui is also the way to glimpse at our ancestors’ wisdom in coordination with nature. Lastly he said, “Adapting to nature sets one at peace both in mind and body because nature is the law of life cycle and our teacher. Knowledge is not sufficient for both discovery of a propitious site of grave and a change in one’s fortune for the better because it’s the God’s will,” which seems to be worth the appreciation and reflection of all of us from depth of our heart.
