황토에 한국의 미를 담다

대한민국 화단의 거장 삼경(三坰) 박병준 화백 

미술계에서 소재의 중요성은 많은 비중을 차지하고 있다. 그래서 작가들은 영구적인 재료를 찾기 위한 많은 연구를 하곤 한다. 다른 작가들과 다른 나만의 독창적인 재료의 선정, 오랜  시간의 연구 없이는 불가능한 일이며, 자신만의 독특한 소재의 발견은 작품의 품위와 위상을 높이는데 중대한 요소로 지적되고 있다. 이처럼 큰 역할을 차지하고 있는 소재 선정이기에 대한민국 화단의 거장으로 알려진 삼경(三坰) 박병준 화백의 작품이 주목받고 있는 것이 아닐까싶다. 국내뿐 아니라 해외에서 그 유래를 찾아보기 힘든 그의 황토화는 이미 소재의 보존성 뿐 아니라 우리 삶의 생명력을 표현한 최고의 작품으로 회자되고 있다.  

편안함과 따뜻함이 묻어나는 대한민국 최고의 걸작   

아마 국내에서 흙을 이용한 예술작가하면 단번에 떠오르는 이가 바로 박병준 화백일 것이다. 60년대부터 시작된 박 화백의 흙 연구는 20여년 간의 연구 끝에 94년 처음 선보이게 된다. 당시 관객들과 미술계의 반응은 뜨거웠다. 먹과 황토의 조화, 그리고 동양화와 서양화의 콜라보레이션은 신선한 충격을 몰고 왔고 그 열기는 국내를 넘어 해외 각지에서 많은 이들의 사랑을 받게 되었다. 생명력이 강한 황토, 흙 중에서도 가장 깨끗한 흙으로서 선택된 황토와 백토는 인간과 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 자연의 최고 소재이다. 인간이 흙에서 태어나 흙에서 자란 먹거리를 섭취하고 평생을 살다 죽어서 흙으로 돌아가기에 소재 자체에서 이미 편안함을 느낄 수 있다. 그렇기에 많은 이들이 이후 황토를 이용한 작품에 매진하지만 박병준 화백의 황토화는 본질적인 요소와 표현력 자체가 다르다고 할 수 있다. 바로 보존성의 차이다. 오랜 기간 소재의 보존성에 대한 연구에 매진했기에 50년 전 작품을 오늘날 물에 담갔다가 끄집어내어도 변질되거나 떨어지지 않는다. 이러한 부분이 바로 자연과 함께 영구적으로 남는 작품이라는 뜻이다. 

무형의 한지위에 황토를 사용해 하나, 하나 생명의 땅으로 탄생시키는 과정을 볼 수 있는 그의 작품은 리듬감 있는 색채와 함께 한국의 서정미를 맛볼 수 있고 고유의 자연경관까지 볼 수 있어 시원함과 편안함, 그리고 따뜻함을 느낄 수 있는 작품이다. 이렇듯 표현된 작품은 미국, 유럽 등 세계적으로 많은 사랑을 받아오기도 했다. 특히 미국에서는 최고의 찬사를 받으며 많은 기관에 수장되고 있다. 

재료와 질료의 완벽한 연구와 작가의 표현의지, 그리고 창의력이 돋보이는 시원한 표현이 아마 박병준 화백의 작품을 감상하는 가장 큰 이유로 생각된다.     

삼경회화의 정수라 할 수 있을 황토그림에서 황토, 나아가서는 흙은 선생에게 생명체이자 생명의 모태이기도 하고, 우주의 순환에 이를 수 있는 개념이다. 흙에서 생명을 받았고 흙에서 먹거리를 얻으며, 결과적으로 다시 흙으로 돌아가는 것이 아니냐는 관점에서 본다면 삼경선생의 황토는 삶의 순환이자 시간의 굴레라 할만하다. 흙에서 황토만 남기고 황토에서 모든 연상의 가지를 제거해 나가면 결과적으로 생명력이 남는다는 것이 황토회화의 현상학적 환원이겠지만 그 과정은 다분히 실증적, 체험적이다. 

황토의 생명력이라는 본질을 남기기 위해 선생은 한반도 뿐 아니라 미국, 프랑스 등 유럽의 가는 곳마다 황토를 찾으러 다니고 비교 분석하고 맛보는 과정을 게을리 하지 않았다.

20여년 가까이 황토에 대한 연구(회화 작업의 매재로써 사용되었을 때 예술적 가치나 참신성에 대한)와 실험을 겸하여 창작을 하여 왔다. 어떠한 방법으로 동양적 아니 우리 민족의 정서에 맞는 작품을 할 수 있을까? 여러 가지로 생각하여 먹의 질료와 그 특질을 받아들일 수 있는 닥종이 바탕위에 우리의 전통적 회화양식과 부벼 바르고 긋고 하는 서양화 기법을 접목 융화시켜 우리 정서에 동화될 수 있는 독특한 황갈색의 소박하고 온화한 황토를 채색의 자료로 선택하여 나의 내면에 흐르고 있는 사상과 사위일체를 주관적으로 표출해 객관화시켜 새로운 하나의 장르를 형성 우리 한국 미술사에 우둑 세워 놓을 수 있는 개성적이고 참신한 작품을 창출하고자 꾸준히 연구 실험하고 있으나 결과가 어떻게 나타날지 그건 의문으로 남겨 놓고 다만 좋은 결과를 향해 꾸준히 연구, 실험을 게을리 하지 않을 뿐이다.

Put The Beauty of Korea into Red Clay

  The importance of  materials account for the large proportion in art circles. So, artists would do a lot of research in order to find out permanent materials. The selection of my own original material different from other artists would be impossible without long hours of research, and the discovery of his own unique material has been pointed out as a significant factor to raise the dignity and status of work. As the material selection, like this, account for such a large role, we guess that the works of artist Park Byeong-jun is attracting attention. The red clay paintings is the achievement without parallel in modern times ]at home and abroad, whose works are the best work being talked about expressing the vitality of our lives as well as the preservation of materials.  

The Best Masterpiece Expressing Comfort and warmth in the Republic of Korea 

  Artist Park Byeong-jun will immediately occur to you in our country in terms of artists using soil in Korea. The artist began in the 1960s to do his research on the soil and showed in 1940 after 20 years of research. At that time the reaction of the audience and the art world was hot. The combination of Korean traditional ink 'Meok' and red clay,  the collaboration of oriental painting and western painting was driving a fresh shock, whose excitement was loved by a lot of people from all over the world beyond the Korea. The red clay having the strong vitality, and white clay selected as the most clean soil among soil is the Nature's best material and inseparable from the human. We can already feel comfortable from the material as we humans are born from the soil, eat food items grown in soil, live his life, die and return to the soil. So after that many people are striving to concentrate on their works using red clay, but the red clay paintings of artist Park Byeong-jun are different from others in the field of essential elements and the expression itself. The difference is the very preservation. As he has been striving to concentrate on the research of the preservation of the material for a long time, he dips his works in the water and take them out of the water, when his works are not deteriorated and the quality  do not drop. It means that this is the very artistic works that remains permanently with the Nature. His works are the ones in which we can feel cool and comfortable and the warmth of the work, as we can see the process of creating the land of life by using the very red clay on intangible traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees, and can taste Korea's lyrical beauty together with the rhythmic color and can see even the unique landscapes. His works expressed in this way have been much loved by the United States, Europe and around the world. Particularly in the United States his works have received the highest praise and are display in many organizations. Ccomplete study material and substance, artist's representation of the will, the cool expression of outstanding creativity may be the main reason why we appreciate the works of artist Park Byeong-jun.  

Thinking of the essence of Samkyung's yellow soil painting, the yellow soil is none other than life, a matrix of life and living entity itself to reach the circulation of the universe. As we were born in the soil and take food from the soil, so we eventually return to the soil. In that sense, the yellow soil can be defined as the core of life circulation, or the wheels of life.

Like phenomenological deduction procedure, linguistic association with meaning in his yellow soil has been deducted and has left only the vital forces in his work; the process was quite empirical. In fact, he naver neglected searching, analyzing, and even tasting the yellow soils whenever he traveled the world, such as in America, France and in European countries.

I vave been studied and worked with yellow earth (about it's artistic value and freshness as material) for about 20years. Where is the way to make our own painting? I try to establish a new genre of painting and make personal and new works by harmonizing our technique and Western technique on Korean paper that accepts the quality of Korean ink, using yellow earth that can be assimilated to our feeling as a color, and objectificating my inner spirit and thought. I don't mind what the result will be. But I would not neglect my study and experiment to get a good result.
