우리들에게 ‘생명’과 ‘행복’을 들려주는 모녀화가

우리는 살아가면서 다양한 그림을 접한다. 그 이미지들은 짧게는 1초 안에 늦어도 수초면 시각을 통해 느껴진다. 그럼에도 보통의 사람들이 전시장의 그림 앞에 서면 ‘이미지의 벽’에 막힌 듯한 답답함을 느낀다. 사람들은 미술품이 인간의 인지적, 감정적 활동의 소산이라 생각해 퍼즐을 풀듯이 안을 들여다보려 애쓰지만 여전히 난해하다. 현대적이거나 추상적일수록 그렇다. 하지만 이런 ‘이미지의 벽’의 답답함을 해소해주면서 대중들에게 적극적으로 다가가서 이야기를 들려주는 모녀화가가 있다. 30년간 꾸준히 작품 활동을 하면서 수많은 전시회를 개최하고 관객에게 한 발짝 다가서는 어머니 이남숙 화가와 동화적 심상에 바탕을 두고 다양한 색감을 통해 보는 이들로 하여금 행복을 느끼게 하는 작가 김민정이 바로 그들이다.    

그녀의 ‘生命’은 계속 살아간다

  이남숙 화가는 바이올린과 첼로 등 악기들을 화면에 붙인 다음 붓질하는 ‘콤바인 페인팅’기법으로 유명하다. 그의 ‘차이코프스키의 바이올린 협주곡 35번’이나 ‘막스 부르흐의 콜 니드라이(Kol Nidrei)’등의 작품은 보는 이로 하여금 감미로운 선율을 느끼게 한다. 그는 생명을 테마로 하는 연작에서 시간의 흐름을 두텁고 거친 마티에르 질감으로 표현한다. 그는 “작품의 영감은 삶의 모든 순간들 속에서 채집됩니다. 그림은 가만히 벽에 걸려 전시되어 있는 것이 아닙니다. 당신이 그림에 호기심을 갖고 유심히 살펴보기 시작하는 순간, 어느덧 그림과 당신의 이야기가 시작됩니다”라고 설명했다. 이남숙 작가는 하루 중 대부분의 시간을 작품구상과 창작에 쏟는다. 아직도 표현하고 싶은 것이 너무 많아 자는 시간조차 아깝다고 하는 그는 대단한 열정의 소유자로 보인다. 왜 ‘생명’이라는 테마에 집중하나? 라는 질문에 그는 “<생명>이라는 단어는 생각 외로 특별한 순간에만 발화하는 용어가 아닐 수 있습니다. 우리가 보는 그 무엇이든 교감하는 그 순간 생명으로 피어납니다. 나는 그 순간을 채집해서 작품에 녹여내는 것입니다”라고 답했다. 그는 앞으로 꾸준히 ‘生命’을 주제로 작업을 하며 다큐멘터리와 책 등 여러 매체들을 통해 작품의 내용을 연구하며 대중들과 교감하고 하고자 하는 자신의 계획을 말했다.

고고 ‘문학’교과서 작품수록, 현대미술계의 기대주로 주목받다

추상화는 점·선·면·색채에 의한 표현을 목표로 한 그림이다. 때문에 그림의 조형성이 아닌 내용을 들여다보고자 하는 독자들은 아무리 보아도 추상화를 이해하기가 어렵다. 그래서 대부분의 관객과의 소통이 힘든 측면도 있다. 김민정 화가는 이화여대와 이화여대 대학원에서 추상화만을 그리며 작업을 해온 서양화가였다. 추상화는 색채와 구도, 비례 등 조형성 자체를 시각적으로 즐기는 관객과 나눌 수 있는 현대 미술의 한 장르이다. 그녀의 추상 작품은 대학 재학 시절에 대한민국 회화대전(국립현대미술관), 대한민국 여성미술대전(예술의 전당), 미술세계 대상전(예술의 전당), 뉴프론티어 공모전 등을 통해 알려지며 현대 미술계의 기대주로 주목받았다. 졸업 후 프랑스 파리 한국문화원에서 개최된 ‘프랑스 한국 문화원 초대전’에서 많은 관객들로부터 호평을 받기도 했으며 MBC 드라마 ‘히어로’ ‘아직도 결혼하고 싶은 여자’ ‘즐거운 나의 집’. SBS‘ 보스를 지켜라’ 에는 그녀의 추상 작품이 등장하기도 한다. 김민정 작가는 예술의 전당에서 전시를 하던 중 “그림이 어딨어요?” 라는 질문을 받고 추상화만을 연구하는 것에 대해 진지하게 고민하게 된다. 그녀 역시 많은 관객과 소통을 하고 싶었다. 자신의 그림을 이해하고 그림을 통해서 무언가 전달해주고 싶은 마음이 간절했다. 졸업 후 그녀는 행복과 사랑을 통해서 관객들과 소통하기로 결심했다. 추상화만을 연구하는 것에서  한발 더 나아가 동화적 심상의 그림을 병행해서 그리기로 결정한다. 그래서 그리기 시작한 <행복한 여행> <행복한 연인> 등의 <행복-시리즈>는 동화적 심상에 바탕을 두고 다양한 색감을 통해 보는 이로 하여금 편안하면서 행복감을 느낄 수 있게 한다. 예술성과 대중성을 확보하며 대중에게 친숙하게 다가서는 발판이 되었다. 그녀의 행복한 여행 시리즈는 SONOVI 라는 가방 회사와 Artist Collaboration을 통해 그녀의 그림이 들어간 가방이 출시되기도 했다. 백화점과 면세점 등 갤러리를 넘어선 일반 생활공간에서 작품과 그녀의 그림이 있는 제품이 함께 전시되어 전국의 대중들에게 소개되기도 하고, 2012년도에는 고등학교 문학교과서에 그녀의 <행복한 여행>시리즈 작품이 실리게 되어 더욱 알려지게 된다. 

김민정 작가는 도시의 형태와 색채를 주제로 한 ‘Color of city' 라는 추상 작품으로 5월 7일부터 11일까지 코엑스에서 열리는 서울 오픈 아트페어 (SOAF) 운영위원회에서 심사하여 선정한 10인의 젊은 작가로 초대되어 < SOAF 2014 Young Generation Artist 10 >특별전에서 초대전시를 갖는다. 오는 9월에는 국내 최대의 아트 페어인 한국 국제 아트페어 (KIAF)에 초대되어 전시에 참여하게 된다. 

 김민정 화가는 추상과 구상이라는 미술 장르의 벽에 구애 받지 않고 관객과의 행복한 소통을 계속해서 이어나갈 것이다. 이처럼 활발한 활동을 하며 현대 미술계의 떠오르는 기대주 김민정 화가. 당찬 그녀의 발걸음을 따라가다 보면 어느새 우린 행복을 느끼고 있을 것이다. 그가 이처럼 활발한 활동을 할 수 있었던 것은 언제나 작품에 대한 조언을 아끼지 않고 격려해주는 스승이자 어머니인 이남숙 화가의 지원이 컸다. 앞으로 두 모녀작가가 어떠한 작품을 그리며 우리 곁에 다가와 ‘생명’과 ‘행복’을 전해줄 지 많은 관심이 기대된다.

We see many different paintings while we are living and can feel what we feel like within one second or several seconds at max. Despite of that, when ordinary people stand up in front of a picture, most of them feel something confused or heavy with uncomfortable things. People try to look at something inside there, because they know all the artistic works are results of human recognition and emotional activity, but people still feel they are difficult to understand. If even they are very modernized or abstract, they feel very often and dense. However, there are mother and daughter artists who solve that awkwardness of ‘Wall of Images’ like that and approach the viewers aggressively to talk about their works. They are the artist and mother, Lee, Nam-Sook who has been working on painting for 30 years steadily and had lots of exhibitions and her daughter, Kim, Min-Jeong who is working on fairytale imaginary via various colors so that people could feel happy.

Artist Lee, Nam-Sook is well-known for ‘combine painting’ mothod, which is brushing onto attached violins or cellos like music instrumentals. Her works, for example, like ‘Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto No. 35’ or ‘Max Christian Friedrich Bruch’s Kol Nidrei’, make people who look at her works kind of sweet and mellow melodies. She is expressing her series works that is about the flow of time with being themed by life with rough and thick m?tier texture. 

She explained, “Inspiration of my works has been collected by all the moments of life. Painting is not just hung on the wall to show. The moment people start looking at it with curiosity and carefully, all of a sudden, some kind of story for them and the work would start.” As for Lee, Nam-Sook artist seems to a very passionate person since she said it is waste to sleep at night because she has so many things to express. About the question of why she is focusing on the subject, ‘Life’, she answered, “The world of Life cannot be a word only for a special moment more than you think. Whatever we see, when they are connected for each other, and that will bloom like life at that moment.” 

She talked about the plan to keep communicating with the public her contents of works and studying on that via various media like documentary films or books and the subject will be ‘Life’, anyway.

Abstract paintings are based on dots, lines, faces and colors with a goal of expression. Therefore, people who look at the story inside feel difficult to understand even though they try hard. So, this kind of art has a problem with have a communication with people. Artist Kim, Min-Jeong studied for only abstract paintings at Ewha Womens University and graduated art school in the same university. Actually, abstract painting is a kind of modern paintings as an art to be able to share and enjoy with the audience. Her abstract painting works got an attention during her college student by winning at Korea Painting Competition (Korean Modern Art Museum), Korea Female Painting Competition (Seoul Art Center), ART WORLD’s selective grand-prix works exhibition (Seoul Art Center) and New Frontier Contest (Korean Modern Art Museum) etc. 

After graduating her works in Korea, she flew to Paris, France to have an exhibition ‘Invitation exhibition from Korean Council in France> in there and got a huge applause and her a few abstract paintings were sponsored for MBC dramas <Hero>, <Woman who still wants to marry> and <My Happy House> and SBS drama <Keep the Boss>. One day, artist Kim, Min-Jeong seriously thought about studying for only abstract paintings after she got asked by someone, “Where is the painting?” 

She also wants to communicate with more people. After all, after graduation, she decided to do that throughout happiness and love. So, she made a decision to paint something with fairytales images into her abstract paintings. Since then, she made some works like <Happy Travel>, <Happy Couple>, which became her happy series and they are based on the fairytales images so that people feel comfortable and happy at the same time. Later, she gained a foothold to be able to come closer to the public with having artistic value and popularity. Also, her happy travel series was come out as a big line by Artist Collaboration with the bag company, SONOVI. So, we can see her works in bags at department stores, duty-free shops which is beyond only the galleries. Now, her works are exposed to the public naturally in the living spaces like that and introduced to more people. Even in 2012, high school’s literature textbook has her <Happy Travel> series and it made her more popular. Artist Kim, Min-Jeong was invited to 10 young artists’ exhibition, which is called <SOAF 2014 Young Generation Artist 10>, who are selected by the committee of SOAF, so she will have an exhibition with a subject, “Color of City’, which is themed by cities shapes and colors in abstract works, from May 7 to 11 at COEX. In coming September, she is supposed join ‘KIAF’, which is the biggest Korean International Art Fair to show her works as well. 

Artist Kim, Min-Jeong will keep communicating with people regardless of the barrier of art genre of abstract and formative arts. And, absolutely, the reason why she could do art work actively like this is her mother’s support as a big part. Her mother always advised her and encouraged her too. She is her teacher and mother. From now on, we are just expecting to see what kind of life and happiness from these mother and daughter artists.
