Perfect harmony with beautiful five colors and folk painting

Conveying a traditional favor of folk painting of its own based on the warmth

Folk Painter Jo, Nam-Yong

Folk painting is an art and culture that has been with us such a long time. With five colors as the center, a traditional flavor that is transcending out of the mystery of remarkable colors is giving infinite warmth. Like that, outstanding folk paintings has steadily remade and recreated over and over by many artists, so it has got the unique characteristic and been loved by people. For that, Power Korea met a folk Painter Jo, Nam-Yong who is one of best painters and listened to her story with folk painting for 30 years.

Fateful meeting with a folk painting and the love for it was started then

In her childhood, folk Painter Jo, Nam-Yong was good at the poetry and writing not only the painting but it was quite fateful of him to know the folk painting. She watched some works of it, which was introduced at KBS on TV. At that time, she was just impressed a lot by that and now, she is showing the own perfect folk paintings to people after a long time for studying and researching.

She actually started it at 33 and it was kind of late in the art industry but she put lots of time, efforts and passion on many works, studying and constant hard working. After all, she became a representative of the folk painting in Korea and is teaching next generation. When looking at her paintings, people feel they are hearty and clear color in tone. Certainly, in one folk painting, there  are plenty of vivid colors and it might make people dizzy to keep watching but for her art works, they have perfect combination and arrangement in colors, so nobody can feel like that. Rather, there is a great harmony.

¡°In Korea, our five colors are a bit different from Chinese and Japanese ones. The colors of Japan include whitewash, so it is a bit muddy to be pastel-feeling strongly and the colors of Chinese look a bit darker, so they feel like grandeur. However, for Korean colors feel like very clear. They are warm and gentle feelings, so people who look at them feel more comfortable and relaxed as a benefit.¡±

Like that, she is dealing with traditional five colors to make arts but, in her paintings, there is her own gut. That is she is using gold. Many artists are looking for their own way to find the eternity of the material. Stone colors don¡¯t change every either, but gold means being forever and it is just beautiful in itself. Also, it is the best material to give some magnificent power.

Female artist Jo, Nam-Yong who is representing in Korean folk painting

While looking her art works, we feel something powerful from them. Maybe, that is why? Her great work, ¡®Ten Longevity symbols paintings¡¯ has been hung at the famous Smithsonian Museum (in Washington) since 2007 in the US. It is the beauty that there islear and pure harmony of five colors as perfection. Also, she has been working as a president of Korea Folk Painting Institute, a member of trust¡¯s board of Korea Traditional Intangible Cultural Asset Promotion and a board member of Art Institute of Shin Saimdang etc. As we see, she has been working for developing Korean traditional art. Besides, she has been contributing her life for teaching students in the culture center, atelier and other cultural institutes as well. She said it is meaningful to keep doing the folk painting that had been made out of ordinary people¡¯s life; therefore, it is more important. By her saying, we feel Korean folk painting will soon wield its stature.
