30년 외길 인생의 국내 대표 한복 연구가, 박술녀

“민족의 얼과 정신이 깃든 한복의 아름다움을 후대로 전해주고 싶다”

해외순방길에 오른 박근혜 대통령이 각국의 정상들과 만난 자리에서 단아한 한복의 맵시를 뽐냈다. 박 대통령의 한복은 국가정상으로서 자연스럽게 한국의 고전적 아름다움을 전 세계에 알리는 계기를 마련했다. 하지만 많은 외국인들이 한복에 대한 아름다움에 매료되어 있는 동안 정작 국내의 현실은 어떠했는가? 한복이 일상적으로 입던 우리나라의 고유 복식에서 특별한 날에만 입는 의례복이 된지 100여년. 그마저도 대여하거나 생략하는 현실 속에서 우리 전통의 한복을 지켜나가야 한다는 각성과 정부 차원의 지원이 시급해 보인다.

월간파워코리아는 국내한복의 대명사이자 우리한복의 전도사 역할을 하고 있는 한복 연구가 박술녀 대표를 만나 그녀의 삶과 우리한복 사랑에 대해 들어봤다.    

한복은 한민족의 얼과 정신이 깃든 옷

26살이 되어서야 본격적으로 한복을 배우기 위해 서울에 상경할 수 있었다. 2년간 학원을 다닌 후 한복 연구가 1세대로 불리던 이리자 선생의 문하생으로 들어갔다. 늦은 나이의 출발이라는 것을 누구보다도 잘 알았기에 잠자는 시간까지 쪼개 가며 남들보다 2~3배로 열심히 일에 매진했다. 인고의 5년 세월을 보낸 후 군자동에 한복집을 처음 오픈하고, 11년 후에는 청담동으로 매장을 옮기고 지금의 ‘박술녀 한복’ 사옥을 마련하기까지 그리 많은 시간이 걸리지는 않았다. 오늘 날 그녀가 한국을 대표하는 한복연구가로, 한복하면 자연스럽게 떠오르는 유명인사로 정상의 자리에 우뚝 설 수 있었던 것은 한복을 사랑하는 마음과 끊임없는 노력의 결과였다. “별을 보고 출근하고 별을 보고 퇴근하는 것은 지금도 변하지 않은 습관이죠. 가족을 제외하고서 한복은 감히 제 인생의 모든 것이라 말할 수 있어요. 최고가 될 수 있었던 것은 한복 외에 모든 것은 내려두었기 때문입니다.”  

그녀의 한복은 많은 유명 인사들에게 사랑 받아 왔다. 특히 김희선· 박주영 부부를 비롯해 김남주· 김승우, 정준호· 이하정, 박신양· 백혜진, 고수· 김혜연, 이휘재· 문정원 등의 부부들이 새로운 인생의 출발에서 그녀의 한복을 갖춰 입었다. 또한 해외의 많은 유명 인사들이 그녀의 한복을 입고 한복의 아름다움에 대한 극찬을 아끼지 않았다. 세계적인 팝가수 브리트니 스피어스를 비롯하여 영화배우 아만다 사이프리드, 안젤리나 졸리, 피아니스트 조지 윈스턴, 오페라 가수 폴 포츠 등이 대표적이다. 

각종 한복패션쇼 개최 등 한복 시장 활성화를 위해 끊임없이 노력해

우리는 ‘추노’와 ‘넝쿨째 굴러온 당신’과 같은 인기 TV 드라마를 통해 익히 한복 연구가 박술녀의 한복을 보아왔다. 연간 수백만 원에 드라이클리닝 비용을 부담하면서도 그녀가 꾸준히 한복을 협찬 해 온 이유는 무엇일까? “저는 평소 우리나라를 대표하는 유명 인사들이 대외적인 행사에서 더 자주 한복을 착용해야한다는 지론을 가지고 있습니다. 그래서 기꺼이 그들을 위해 한 땀 한 땀 정성껏 만든 한복을 협찬해 왔습니다.” 한복 문화 전도사로 명성이 높아지면서 정부 행사에 참석하는 외국인을 위해 한복을 짓는 일도 늘었다. 2010년에는 G20 정상회의의 성공적 개최를 염원하는 국궁페스티벌에서 주한 외국대사 부인들에게, 서울국제경제자문단총회(SIBAC)에서는 참석한 외국인 최고경영자들에게 한복을 협찬했다. 

또한 그녀는 매년 자비를 들여 패션쇼를 열어왔다. 대한민국 한복대전 한복패션쇼, 박술녀 한복 인생 23년 패션쇼, 박술녀 한복 사랑나눔 패션쇼, 박술녀 한복 명성황후 패션쇼, 한국· 아랍에미리트연합 수교 20주년 기념 ‘한국문화의 밤’ 패션쇼, 한복사랑· 환경사랑 박술녀한복쇼, 제43차 세계지식재산권협의회의 패션쇼, 한국 해비타트 사랑의집짓기 건축기금마련 패션쇼, 제35차 세계주문양복연맹총회(WFMT) 패션쇼, 세계관광협회(WTTC) 아시아총회 패션쇼 등이 대표적이다. 

어쩜 그녀가 시간적 경제적 부담을 감수하면서까지 수많은 협찬과 한복 쇼를 이어오는 것은 한복을 지키기 위한 거대한 몸부림 혹은 아우성일지도 모른다. 7년 전 뜻밖의 갑상선 암을 선고 받고 수술을 받았다. 한복을 위해서라면 아이를 출산하고 곧장 일에 뛰어든 것도, 가족들과 제대로 밥 한 끼 먹을 시간 없는 것도 마땅하다 여겼던 그녀였다. 과로와 스트레스에 시달리는 것도 기꺼이 즐겼던 그녀는 독한 마음을 먹고 일주일에 5일 동안 단전호흡과 운동을 하며 건강을 되찾았다. 민족의 얼과 정신이 깃든 한복의 아름다움을 후대로 전해주기 위해서는 아플 시간도 없기 때문이다. 하지만 묻고 싶다. 그녀가 언제까지 혼자만의 외로운 싸움을 이어가야 하느냐고. 최근 한복진흥센터를 설립하는 등의 체계적인 지원에 나서겠다는 정부의 뜻이 부디 실효성을 갖기를 기대해 본다.  

Park Sool-lyeo, a Korean clothes specialist with 30 years of a distinguished career

“I would hand down the beauty of Korean clothes with the spirit and mind of our people.” 

President Park on her overseas trip boasted the graceful shapeliness of Korean clothes she wore in her meeting with leaders of each country. The Korean clothes worn by a national leader President Park naturally informed the whole world about the classical beauty of Korea. While many foreigners were fascinated by the beauty of Korean clothes, however, what was actually going on in this country? It is already a hundred years since the Korean clothes was turned from our own casual style of a dress into a costume worn only on special days, and that through rental service or by cancellation. This condition seems to make it an urgent necessity ? a resolution to keep to our traditional Korean clothes and support from the government. Power Korea Monthly met President Park Sool-lyeo, a Korean clothes specialist and active promoter representing Korea, to hear about her life and love of our Korean clothes.  

Korean clothes with the spirit and mind of our Korean people 

Korean clothes specialist Park Sool-lyeo was born as the third daughter among seven siblings in a small country village in Seocheon, a place of scenic beauty with the Geum River running stirringly in front and with azaleas in shocking pink out all around in the background. As many daughters in a family with many children in those days, she had to assist the family with little brothers when younger, cherishing her passion and dream about Korean clothes. “I first learned sewing from mother and it was so interesting that I always went into sewing in every spare time. From that time, I seem to have had an unusual attachment to Korean clothes. Isn’t it attractive enough simply because it is our traditional style of a dress?” 

As late as 26 years old, she was able to come up to Seoul to learn about Korean clothes in earnest. After taking classes at an institute for two years, she came to work as an apprentice to master Lee Ri-ja who was called the first-generation Korean clothes specialist. Knowing that it was a late start in career, she was devoted to work two or three times more assiduously than others sitting up late at night. After spending 5 years of stoicism, she opened a Korean clothes shop for the first time at Gunja-dong, then relocated to Cheongdam-dong 11 years later, and totally it had not taken so long before she prepared the current company building of ‘Park Sool-lyeo Korean Clothes.’ Her place at the top as a specialist representing Korea and a celebrity naturally coming to mind when it comes to Korean clothes has been the result of her love of Korean clothes and incessant efforts at it. “Going to work and coming home with the stars in the sky has been my invariable habit until now. I can say that Korean clothes are the whole thing in my life except for my family. I have risen to the top because I have put everything aside except Korean clothes.”                 

Her Korean clothes have been loved by many celebrities and especially couples like Kim Hee-sun and Park Joo-yeong, Kim Nam-joo and Kim Seung-woo, Chung joon-ho and Lee Ha-jeong, Park Sin-yang and Baek Hye-jin, drummer Kim Hye-yeon, Lee Hwee-jae and Moon jung-won dressed up with her Korean clothes at the start of their new life. Besides, many celebrities overseas put on her Korean clothes and highly praised the beauty of the costume. Among them were a global pop singer Britney Spears, movie stars Amanda Seyfried and Angelina Jolie, pianist George Winston, and opera singer Paul Potts.      

Incessant efforts to revitalize the Korean clothes market by holding each kind of Korean clothes fashion show     

Despite the shifting trend of Korean clothes market toward rental service, ‘Park Sool-lyeo Korean clothes’ never gives a rental to ordinary customers because she wants to stop the contraction of the market. Besides, to boost the Korean clothes market, she is also making many fancy things in everyday life, such as quilt and cushion, in person to show. “Look. How beautiful the Korean clothes are! I am so sorry that these Korean clothes are treated like a relic of the past like customs of wearing them even on festive days and celebrating or mourning events are disappearing.” 

Through popular TV dramas like ‘Choono’ and ‘You My Husband Got a Family, we have been quite familiar to the Korean clothes of craftsperson Park Sool-nyeo. What is it that despite the annual burden of several million won and dry cleaning expenses, she has constantly supported for Korean clothes? “I have a pet opinion that celebrities representing our country should wear Korean clothes more often at external events. That’s why I have willingly provided for them Korean clothes sincerely made in every single stitch.” With the rising fame as a missionary for promoting Korean clothes culture, she has come to make more Korean clothes for foreign people who are going to participate in the government’s events. In 2010, at Gookgung Festival wishing for the successful G20 summit conference, she provided Korean clothes for wives of foreign ambassadors to Korea, and for foreign CEO’s who participated in SIBAK (Seoul International Business Advisory Council). Besides, she has been annually holding a fashion show spending her own money. Namely, they were Korean clothes exhibition show, Park Sool-lyeo’s 23 years of Korean clothes show, Park Sool-lyeo’s love of Korean clothes show, Park Sool-lyeo’s Myeongseong Empress show, ‘Korean culture’s night’ show celebrating the 20^th anniversary of Korea-UAE relations, Park Sool-lyeo’s love of Korean clothes and environment show, the 43^rd World International Property Organization show, Habitat for Humanity Korea’s Construction Fund show, the 35^th WFMT show, and WTTC Asian General Meeting show. 

Probably, it is a gigantic struggle or a cry to protect the Korean clothes that she has made her carry on numerous supports and Korean clothes shows despite the burdens in time and finance. Seven years ago, she was sentenced to thyroid cancer and had an operation, In behalf of Korean clothes, she had hardly given birth when she entered into business, and she had even accepted the situation of having little time for eating a meal with her own family enjoying the suffering from overwork and stress. But pulling herself together, she engaged in abdominal breathing and exercise for five days a week until recovery of her health. It seems that she has no time to get sick in order to pass down the beauty of Korean clothes to posterity. But here is a question. Until when must she go on with the lonely fight with herself? It is expected in this context that the government’s recent professed will toward a systematic support by establishing Korean Clothes Promotion Center will bear fruit.
