미용 교육계의 독보적인 신화

좀처럼 경기가 회복될 기미를 보이지 않고, 4년제 대학교를 졸업해도 88만원 세대를 면치 못하는 현실. 그리고 조기 퇴직이 대세가 되면서 ‘직업 교육’ ’실업자 재취업 교육’이 새롭게 화두로 떠오르고 있다. 학벌보다는 실용적인 기술을 익혀 미래유망직종에서 인생 2모작을 시작하려는 이들이 많아지고 있는 것이다. 투 잡을 뛰는 직장인도 많지만 낮에는 회사에서 일하고 밤에는 기술 습득을 위해 ‘주경야독’하는 이들이 급속도로 늘고 있는 것도 같은 이유에서다. 불확실의 시대에 생존과 승리를 위한 방법은 전문기술력을 갖추는 것뿐이다. 

아름다움을 창조하는 장인 육성의 산실

‘기술 및 직업 교육’을 얘기하면서 1970년대부터 자리 잡아온 직업전문학교를 거론하지 않을 수 없다. 과거에는 고등학교에서 학업 실력이 모자라는 학생들만 가는 곳 정도로 여겨졌지만 요즘은 그렇지 않다. 직업학교는 전국적으로 약 730여 곳. 일반 고교 졸업자는 물론이고 대학교 졸업자, 직장인, 실업자 등이 대거 직업학교의 문을 두드리고 있다. 그 대표적인 곳이 전문적인 미용 아티스트를 배출하는 성심미용예술직업전문학교(www.seongsim.co.kr 교장 신화남)다.

부산광역시 부산진구에 위치한 이 학교는 부산은 물론이고 전국 최고 수준의 미용전문학교다. 헤어 미용, 피부 미용, 네일아트, 메이크업, 두피 및 모발 관리, 컬러리스트, 속눈썹 연장술 등 다양한 커리큘럼을 갖추고 있으며 이 과정은 다시 일반교육과정, 노동부와 연계한 실업자 직업 훈련, 직장인 교육, 외국인 교육, 영세자영업자 교육 등으로 전문화?세분화된다. 부산 시내 대학 등과 효과적인 산학협력을 구축했으며, 공공기관으로부터는 최고의 교육 지정기관으로 인정받았다.

후회 없는 30년 외길 인생 

신화남 교장이 원칙으로 세운 학교의 교훈은 창조적인 미용인, 장인의 미용인, 아름다운 미용인 세 가지다. 창조를 중요시 하는 예술가 정신으로 무장한 기능인, 즉 장인을 육성하겠다는 것이며 이와 동시에 참된 인성, 품성을 가르치겠다는 교육 철학인 것이다. 이러한 장기적인 안목. 1985년 성심미용학원으로 개원한 이후 꾸준히 성장해온 비결이다. 

“미래는 전문가의 시대이다. 미용 분야는 아직 미개척지가 많고 전문가가 꼭 필요하다. 하지만 전문가가 되기 위해서는 기술 못지 않게 인성을 갖춰야 한다.” 

이 철학을 지키기 위해 학생 선발하기에 앞서 취업의지 등에 대한 심층상담을 진행하고 있다. 뚜렷한 의지가 없는 학생은 중도 포기의 가능성이 높기 때문이다. 특히 미용계가 여성 전문 인력을 필요로 한다는 점을 인식하여 경력 단절 여성들을 대상으로 특화훈련을 실시하고 있다. 여성의 경제활동 기회를 제공하고 여성 잠재인력의 취업을 적극적으로 지원하고 있는 것이다. 

그 결과 최근 5년간 졸업생 90%이상의 취업률을 자랑하고 있다. 직업능력개발, 기능장려사업 등을 통한 국가산업발전에 기여한 점을 인정받아 최근 6년 연속 교육 A등급을 받았고 대통령 표창, 국무총리상, 노동부장관상, 부산시장상 등 수없이 많은 상을 받았다. (사)한국신지식인협회로부터 ‘신지식인 교육분야 대상’에 선정되는 등 전문기술인 양성의 산실임을 인정받은 교육기관인 것이다. 

재능 기부. 그리고 은광연세

한남대학원 미용향장학과 미용학 석사 출신이며 미용기능장인 신화남 교장은 30년 넘게 한 우물만 고집스럽게 판 외골수다. 하지만 가끔, 아니 정기적으로 한눈을 팔기도 한다. 봉사와 창작활동이 바로 그것이다. 

학교장의 경영철학은 은광연세(恩光衍世). 남에게 덕을 주고 베풀면 그 은혜로운 빛이 세상에 널리 퍼져 나감을 뜻하는 말이다. 이는 조선후기 대표적인 서예가이자 대학자인 추사 김정희가 제주에 유배 온 직후 제주 의녀 반수 김만덕의 공덕을 기려 그 후손에 써줬던 글이다. 요즘 말로 하면 ‘노블리스 오블리제’가 될 것이다. 이러한 학훈답게 학원 설립 이후 매주 화요일마다 소외계층 수용 사회시설을 방문에 무료로 재능기부를 펼치고 있다. 교육가로서의 활동뿐만 아니라 지역사회 발전을 위해 각종 봉사활동에도 앞장서고 있는 것이다. “학생들에게 교육뿐만 아니라 자신이 가지고 있는 기술로 남에게 덕을 주고 베풀어야 한다”고 강조하면서 스스로 실천하고 있다. 또한 각종 실용서의 저자인 동시에 <가슴속에 당신을 묻고>, <내 영혼의 사랑아> <고마운 당신> 등 3권의 시집을 낸 시인이기도 하다. 

국내 미용 산업 시장은 약 32조 원에 달한다. 지속적 성장이 가능한 고부가가치 사업이다. 하지만 고급 인력은 늘 부족하다. 한류 열풍을 타고 국내 성형 기술에 이어 미용 기술에 대한 중국 등 외국의 관심도 커지고 있는 요즘이다. 신화남 교장의 역할이 특별히 기대되는 이유다.    

“기존의 틀을 과감히 벗어 던지고 브레인의 수요를 충족하는 학교. 교육과 실기에 최선을 다하는 학교를 만들겠다. 인성을 갖춘 기능인을 양성하겠다”는 신 교장의 각오가 미용계에서 전체 교육계로 퍼져나갔으면 하는 바람이다.

With no signs of economic recovery and the new trend of early retirement, vocational and workfare education emerges as a new issue.  

More and more people want to have practical skills, instead of diplomas, in order to start a new life working at a promising new job. The reason is all the same for those who work by day and study by night. In the age of uncertainty, the only way to survival and victory is by professional skills.

The cradle for fostering beauty artisans

Speaking of vocational training, we should mention vocational schools in Korea, which have been founded since 1970s, and SungSim Beauty Training School, located in Busanjin Gu Busan Gwangyeoksi, represents the beauty school in Korea.

Principal Shin set three school mottos: creative artist, professional artist, beautiful artist. What he means by them is to raise artisans with good personality, which served greatly for SungShim to steadily grow up since its foundation in 1985.

In keeping with this principle, they conduct in-depth counseling to find out applicants’ will to work before choosing them. Students without a firm will to wok are highly likely to drop out.

Considering the special need of beauty culture industry for professional womanpower, they do their utmost to offer women chances to work, and utilize to the maximum the potential of womanpower. 

For the past 5 years, SungSim has shown more than 90% of employment rate, and was selected by Korea Sinzisikin Association as “Person with Advanced Ideas.”   

Donating talents

A master of cosmethology at Hannam University’s graduate school, artisan and principal Mr. Shin has devoted his whole life to beauty culture only. But one exception is that he regularly diverted his attention to service to his community and writing. 

Following his management philosophy “One good turn follows another,” he has visited social facilities for the underprivileged and donated his talents there every Tuesday since the foundation of SungSim. He is also a poet who has written 3 collections of poems, along with many practical books.

The domestic beauty culture market is estimated to be worth about 32 trillion won, meaning it is a high-value-added market capable of continued growth. But we are always lacking high quality human resources.

In the wake of “Hallyu, the popularity of Korean pop culture abroad, foreigners become more and more interested in our techniques of beauty culture, after those of cosmetic surgery, and we expect more from the role of principal Shin.    

“Staying aloof from the existing framework, I will make this school fulfill the demand for a high-class workforce and concentrate on practical skills.” 

We hope that his determination to nurture beauty artisans with good personality will spread over to the other educational circles.
